Do you think if Kylie had returned with any other single from light years apart from spinning around as the lead that her comeback would have been as successful.

If for example on a night like this was the lead would it have worked?

I love what spinning around did for her, it done what was needed and the video was a bit like a big tik tok success from the modern era but as a song i always feel there are so many better ones on the album and it's not a go to kylie song for me.

'Spinning Around' isn't a favourite for me either (although I have a moment with it every now and then), but I think everything came together with that as the "comeback" in a way I couldn't have imagined anything else working. It made a statement and the video/looks were iconic.

Then 'On A Night Like This' was exactly what she needed after to solidify the fact she's actually back and that wasn't a one-off.

I remember being a bit meh about the release (following on from a commercial unsuccessful era), but was blown away by the response and how everyone was clamoring for Kylie again.

I still remember going to buy it in HMV on Tuesday and the guy said it had been their biggest seller and was definitely going to be #1.

I love what the song done for her commercial comeback and it had all the elements needed - great full on pop, the video/outfit.

On a night like this did cement her initial comeback wasn't a fluke and kids helped to really build the success further. I am glad kids wasn't the lead and that her commercial success was down to her solo releases.

Spinning Around grabbed the attention of the press largely helped by the video which just worked brilliantly as it played a huge part in the success of it and none of the videos that followed from the album grabbed the same attention or even came close.

The lead into its release didn't really indicate a number 1 was coming for her which made the week itself even more exciting.

Your disco needs you was the rumoured lead single and as much as I love it and prefer it to spinning around I don't think it would have been the right choice for lead.

I wonder how on a night like this would have worked though as the lead.

Nothing would have had the same impact.

The song , the video , the hot pants it all worked.

I actually prefer OANLT but dont think it would have been the same.

Still don’t understand why Please Stay became a single!!

Everything was perfect for this comeback.

Return to pop, dance routine, hot pants, sexy video, sexy kylie, no streaming, no downloads. Kylie was right age for all radio

I think it really had to be Spinning Around above any other song. Every element of it worked to serve as a triumphant reintroduction to pop Kylie (or for me as an introduction, given that I'd not heard of her before Spinning Around  ). The gold hotpants is a defining image of the early 00s, it was very zeitgeist-y. To the extent that she was continually questioned about them, even two decades later! :drama:

The gold hotpots was a masterstroke even though it was an unintentional big outcome for them but boy did it work.

I think they will forever come up in her interviews when career reflecting.

Everything was right about spinning around so it was the ideal comeback song.

I prefer numerous Light Years tracks but I don't believe any other song would have matched what Spinning Around achieved and how it rejuvenated Kylie's career.

Please Stay is a good song but there was better options for a fourth single.

Best decision ever!

To me - songs like OOANLT, Padam or Head are excellent pop songs that just happen to be sung by Kylie.

But songs like SA, all the lovers and Confide are songs meant for Kylie and I can’t imagine anyone else singing it. SA was that best lead single to bring her back into Public attention as it reminded the world what we love Kylie for - effortless easy on the ear catchy pop wirh a sense of euphoria and gay abandon. In short - it’s got the Kylie DNA.

I suspect it OANLT was the lead single, it may have changed the narrative to “Kylie is adopting a dark clubby euro sound image” Or something and the renaissance wouldn’t have gone so smoothly.

Kudos to Parlo for the game plan - (re)intro K to the world with a sound she’s known best for and doesn’t antagonise anyone… and then work on the darker edgier sound for Fever.

Oh, and my sweet Padamic_Tension , great topic!

My only issue with light years is that it’s a pleasant collection of pop songs but there wasn’t much mainstream single material other than the first 3 singles. Or maybe a 4th could’ve been the title track.

I’m not saying there weren’t any bops on the album, just saying none (bar the first 3 singles) seemed strong enough to be singles.

Disco Down would have been a marvelous choice and the title track too.

Butterfly equally showed potential.

'Disco Down' would have made an absolutely marvellous single I think.

Agree. I also maintain the belief that So Now Goodbye would’ve made a good 4th single too.

I seem to be in the minority that really love Spinning Around. I’ve never done a complete Kylie singles rank, but I imagine it’s be top 5-10 for me.
