August 31, 20241 yr It’s probably because the charts during drive time so they want songs the general listener can relate to! Does it ever get boring being devils advocate
August 31, 20241 yr Yeah I’m not one to moan too much as in some ways it’s remarkable there’s still a chart show at all, but the choices really have been staggeringly bad recently. The principle that you generally prioritise newer or climbing hits is pretty well established from Top Of The Pops to the shows with Bruno Brookes 30 years ago. And they’re actively pivoting the opposite way. It’s really strange.
August 31, 20241 yr There can’t be many female solo artists with more weeks at #1 overall. Madonna ofc, Kate Bush and Mariah maybe? Female Acts with more than 13 weeks Madonna - 29 weeks Spice Girls - 22 weeks Kylie / Whitney / Ellie Goulding - 16 weeks Beyonce / Cher - 15 weeks If you include band #1s to solo ones then Geri has 25 weeks at #1 both Melanie C and Emma have 24 weeks and Melanie B has 23 weeks. Also Beyonce has 17 weeks and Cheryl has 14 weeks. Edited August 31, 20241 yr by spiceboy

And they’re actively pivoting the opposite way. It’s really strange. Exactly this - I'm glad we have a chart show and I know there are *far* bigger issues in the world than this, I just think it's quite simple to get the chart show right. It's just a couple of song swaps that would be needed really, considering the chart is a bit stale at the moment anyway so we're naturally going to need the staler hits to pad out the runtime. The real bother for me is that it's becoming more regular to skip a new entry. I understand that sometimes there's no appropriate edit, but the likes of WILDFLOWER, Sailor Song, Slow It Down and HOT TO GO! were skipped as new entries and that's just from current top 40 hits - it's a strange decision to make when surely you'd *want* to play new songs each week and not the same stuff as the week before? Obviously three of those four have been played since, Slow It Down in particular has done quite well out of chart plays in the end, but nobody was to know that at the time...!
August 31, 20241 yr Moving the chart to Fridays was a big mistake and it should’ve remained on Sundays But what would be the point of counting it down two days after it's been revealed?
August 31, 20241 yr But what would be the point of counting it down two days after it's been revealed? I’m not on about them counting down 2 days after it’s been revealed. I’m on about going back to how it was between 1969 and 2015 when the weekly chart ran from Sunday to Saturday and not Friday to Thursday as it is now Edited August 31, 20241 yr by Hadji
August 31, 20241 yr It's the chart, it's the songs the "general listener" has been listening to anyway! :kink: They're always gonna have to play some of the old hits and I think it's totally fair that they do that, but for two weeks in a row we've had all of Stick Season, Beautiful Things, Lose Control, Too Sweet and Happier played, and they're some of the oldest songs in the chart, whilst WILDFLOWER hasn't had a single chart play yet and Somedays has been skipped the last two weeks despite climbing both times. It's not about personal preference - we all know I'd take Beautiful Things over anything else in the top 40 - but surely a couple of those older hits could be substituted out for a couple of the newer songs. The fact it's broadcast over drivetime shouldn't change the chart's ability to shine a light on new, blossoming hits in my opinion. I don’t disagree just looking at it from the R1 POV but if a songs new or climbing they should ALWAYS get a play imo! Does it ever get boring being devils advocate No, I always try and look at things from different view points.

I’m on about going back to how it was between 1969 and 2015 when the weekly chart ran from Sunday to Saturday and not Friday to Thursday as it is now Was that the way though, I always thought the chart was revealed on a Tuesday or something mad like that before like 1986?

I’m on about going back to how it was between 1969 and 2015 when the weekly chart ran from Sunday to Saturday and not Friday to Thursday as it is now You are aware the reason it was changed is so we can be aligned with the worldwide release day on a Friday, right? I'm sure you'll offer a genius solution to that as you always do.
August 31, 20241 yr Author The chart running Sunday to Saturday and being broadcast on Sunday just wouldn't work now, the global release day of Friday isn't going to change and it makes sense to be aligned with that. The Friday chart is just about the right length anyway when they actually pick the right songs to play.
August 31, 20241 yr You are aware the reason it was changed is so we can be aligned with the worldwide release day on a Friday, right? I'm sure you'll offer a genius solution to that as you always do. But nowadays, you don’t see songs going straight into the chart like they used to. When the chart first switched to a Friday to Thursday chart in 2015, songs were going straight into the chart upon release but it’s very rare that ever happens now, what with streaming being much bigger than it was in 2015 and also, they were getting more listeners on a Sunday than they do on a Friday. A lot of people say to me that the chart was much better when it was on Sundays and it was more enjoyable on Sundays too. The charts actually started off as Friday to Thursday from 1952 to 1960 then it switched from a Thursday to Wednesday chart until 1967 then it switched from a Wednesday to Tuesday chart until 1969 but with r1 being launched in 1967, the chart show actually started broadcasting on their stations as a Wednesday to Tuesday chart Edited August 31, 20241 yr by Hadji
August 31, 20241 yr Every song should get a play is the only change I’d make. So 30-40 each song gets 30 seconds but a specific 2-3 get played properly 20-30 similar 10-20 all get a minute a specific 4-5 get the full song until top 10 in full. But I doubt they’ll change anything
August 31, 20241 yr 30 second snippets of songs makes little sense, it'll just annoy casual listeners who would want to hear songs being played in full. What they really need is a far less annoying presenter and better song selection.
August 31, 20241 yr Author There's no need for them to play every song in the top 40 these days - especially with the amount of complaints y'all post about Stick Season and Lose Control anyway! :kink: (myself included x) The chart's just not fast enough to warrant every song getting a play, so the current format is perfect - it's just the song selections that are leaving a lot to be desired right now. It's not always been the case, it just feels like it's gone that way recently, so it's possible to put on an effective chart show that plays the new entries, the climbing songs, obviously some older hits sprinkled in too but not at the expense of new music. Personally I wouldn't have even changed that much about this week's show! These were played: 01 NE 01 Sabrina Carpenter ~ Taste 02 17 12 Sabrina Carpenter ~ Please Please Please 03 14 20 Sabrina Carpenter ~ Espresso 04 02 21 Chappell Roan ~ Good Luck, Babe! 05 01 03 Chase & Status and Stormzy ~ Backbone 06 03 15 Billie Eilish ~ Birds of a Feather 07 07 02 Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars ~ Die With A Smile 08 05 13 Bl3ss and CamrinWatsin ~ Kisses (feat. Bbyclose) 09 04 04 Charli XCX ~ Guess (feat. Billie Eilish) 10 06 27 Dasha ~ Austin 13 08 11 Jordan Adetunji ~ Kehlani 17 RE 90 Oasis ~ Wonderwall 18 12 15 *Nsync ~ Bye Bye Bye 19 RE 69 Oasis ~ Live Forever 20 13 20 Shaboozey ~ A Bar Song (Tipsy) 21 18 06 Jade ~ Angel of My Dreams 23 19 16 Myles Smith ~ Stargazing 24 15 04 Hanumankind ~ Big Dawgs (feat. Kalmi) 26 21 18 Taylor Swift ~ I Can Do It With A Broken Heart 28 27 23 Hozier ~ Too Sweet 29 33 10 Coldplay ~ FeelsLikeImFallingInLove 30 26 32 Benson Boone ~ Beautiful Things 31 30 43 Teddy Swims ~ Lose Control 33 28 17 Madonna ~ Like a Prayer 35 35 05 Gigi Perez ~ Sailor Song 36 34 27 The Blessed Madonna ~ Happier (feat. Clementine Douglas) 37 32 48 Noah Kahan ~ Stick Season 40 25 05 Post Malone ~ Guy For That (feat. Luke Combs) I'd have chosen the following to be played instead: Somedays - at a new peak Don't Look Back in Anger - I can understand not wanting overload of one artist but it's a notable re-entry nonetheless The Door - at a new peak WILDFLOWER - at a new peak I Love You, I'm Sorry - fresh hit From the above, they could definitely have sacrificed a selection of Happier, Stick Season, Lose Control, Beautiful Things, Too Sweet, Stargazing, A Bar Song (Tipsy) and I Can Do It With a Broken Heart - none of them are climbing and all have been around a long time by now. There's still room to play a few of these, though, so it's a slightly confusing approach happening at the moment.
August 31, 20241 yr I don’t bother much with the Radio 1 chart show. I much prefer listening to Top Of The Pops on BBC Sounds/BBC World Service as it usually plays new entries / climbers and the whole top 5, plus includes bits of news and interviews, with a focus on both albums and single charts. With no stupid “send a message on what’s app and let me know what you’re doing this weekend” An combination of this and the current chart show would be an improvement to the Jack Saunders show

For the longer list: Agnetha and Ani-Frid - 31 weeks - beating all other women including Madonna! Kyla - 15 weeks Edited August 31, 20241 yr by GreyAsh
