Ship of Fools is my ultimate Erasure #1, fav song, their best lyrics, love the baby of the class part and the 1+1 part too

also love Always, was convinced it had been a #1 oops, also Love to Hate You

also love Oh L'Amour, not sure I've ever heard the Dollar cover

Stop and Chorus I like a lot but not love...

Their most famous hit? Well certainly streaming suggests so, current sales of the track are now a whopping 1.4 million sales making it, at least, their best seller! The song was of course covered by a few acts including Bjorn Again in 1992 (#25) and Wheatus in 2001 when it improved on the original’s chart position by 1 place.

Fun fact: It was released at the same time as the Olympics in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea and the rumour was at the time that this song was released as the unofficial UK theme:

“Seoul, I hear you calling
Oh, baby, please
Give a little respect to me”

It won the first Erasure rate and pre voting I suspected this would be the winner so I'm pleasantly surprised!

So your winner is either

BLUE SAVANNAH

OR

SOMETIMES

Fingers crossed for Blue Savannah now that my favourite is out... I know it's an obvious choice for a 30 pointer but there is a very good reason why it has become their best seller over time.

'A Little Respect' is obviously a classic but still not in my Erasure top 10. I guess it's just been that bit too overplayed over the years.

'Blue Savannah' FTW!!

oh bit surprised A Little Respect is "only" #3 :D
I can see why 'A Little Respect' might have been an underwhelming winner for some (even before seeing Mango's comment above, I was going to suggest it must be verging on ~overplay~ territory now which always damages chances in these rates), but I couldn't justify putting anything ahead of it in my votes.
I realised I prefer the more subtle songs like Ship of Fools or Always
Surprised 'A Little Respect' didnt win this, their biggest song for me!

Third release from “Wild!” ended up becoming the biggest single from it! The promo was directed Kevin Godley. We all put this in our top 10's and it gathered the most maximum points from voters in the entire rate!

The record that started it all and put them on the pop map! It peaked at No 2 behind Europe’s “Final Countdown” in late 1986. Its lyrics were changed at the last minute (as you can see in the clip below) which obviously didn’t affect its prospects. It became the first of 17 top 10 hits in a 19 year span.

Bell: “We were writing for the second album upstairs from the rough trade office and suddenly this song came out “Sometimes”. As the song developed and we got this hook we knew it was going to be a hit”.

It wins the rate DESPITE not getting a single maximum points from anyone and being outside the top 10 for two voters though it was in 7 voters top 3.

Thanks to all who voted and commented- it's been fun! :D
Wow at “Sometimes” winning without a single 30! My top 2 were the top 2 reversed so I really can’t complain. Thanks Gezza!

Andy is a much better singer than dancer isn’t he haha.

Thanks Gezza, really enjoyed it - 2 days until I play Gaudete on loop :)

Oh that's a disappointing winner from my perspective, but I see I gave it the fewest points out of anyone so I guess I would think that. It's still a good single and a deserved hit, but there's many more ahead of it for me. It's particularly awwww for me as they're absolutely not a band that peaked on their first hit.

Blue Savannah is a brilliant song, I love the sweeping piano lines and the drive behind the percussion. Plus it's just such an unusual song, both in terms of lyrics and structure that it really stands out. The singles from Wild were really good, I remember being a little disappointed when the rest of the album wasn't really as strong.

Thanks for running this Gezza, it's been lovely reflecting back on their singles

I was hoping Blue Savannah would win this but 2nd place is still a good finish and I did give 28 points to the winner.

Thanks Gezza for all your efforts.
