Do you have a list of them? I’d be intrigued. Considering we both own a lot of stuff, I have a gut feel we may not actually have that much crossover.

I got rid of 2 large boxes of compilation CDs a couple of years ago as they were just taking up room and I only bought most of them as they were useful for when I used to set music quizzes - back in the days before Spotify and the like made it really easy.

At the time I had over 3,000 CDs plus about the same in CD singles. I probably got rid of a couple of hundred but I also took them all out of the jewel cases and keep them in a slim plastic sleeve now, as it saves so much space.

I don't buy CDs anymore unless it's for an artist who I am particularly invested in and they need the financial support.

That's the same with my vinyl. I don't play them but I will buy every version for an artist that warrants it.

Back in the day, Asda used to sell off bargain bin chart singles for 1p (yes, really), and I got loads of singles that way.

I have also picked up several batches of over 100 albums at a time, for about £25-£50 a pop, over the years.

So while it sounds like an insane number, most have been sourced in cheap ways, in large quantities. But I do still on average buy 2-3 CDs a week even now (including charity shop stuff, so I rarely spend much).

Do you have a list of them? I’d be intrigued. Considering we both own a lot of stuff, I have a gut feel we may not actually have that much crossover.

I don't, sadly, i only have a list of my CD singles, which hasn't been updated since early 2008 (see below). I've got many more albums than I have singles.

Do you guys still play your CDs regularly?

I do, but I rip to my computer and listen via iTunes, I don't tend to use a CD player.

I would say I use iTunes more than Spotify when I'm at home.

I have:

3,539 CDs (1,718 albums, 1,724 singles, 97 EPs - including accompanying DVD releases where applicable)

118 cassettes (65 albums, 48 singles, 5 EPs)

38 vinyl (19 twelve-inch, one ten-inch, 18 seven-inch)

My collection can be viewed here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1i4H...dit?usp=sharing

I store them across two rooms in my house - my bedroom and my study. My bedroom has the bulk of my collection across a variety of shelving and storage units, sorted A-Z by artist (first name, so Alexandra Burke goes under A for example). Within each artist, albums go first in chronological order, before singles in chronological order. Any releases that are too big for where they're supposed to be stored will be put separately. This method does mean that filing any new releases away can be quite the mission...!

Downstairs in the study is where I store the collections of my favourite artists, either in shelving or smaller CD storage boxes, so that I can access my most valued collections more easily, as well as store further memorabilia for my top favourites (e.g. various One Direction books, merchandise etc are all down here too).

I also have 329 DVDs which are all downstairs - 57 are music, 43 films, 228 are TV.

Do you guys still play your CDs regularly?

Not in the slightest... I do play my records but don't even have a CD player any longer. Although I do have a drive I can attach to my laptop if I ever want to rip anything.

There's quite a specific type of crossover there... but I get the impression that you largely started collecting as I was stopping with singles - the majority of mine are from 1989 to 2002. I did have some of yours on 12" or as paid for downloads but I haven't counted them.

I've also looked through the list on Joseph's spreadsheet and I think we have (about) 147 in common! Not sure if that's more or less than I expected :D

I've still got:

* A lot of CD singles - mostly in a folder with the inserts that came with them. Most of these are from 98-2002(ish)

* A lot of CD albums - I did a clear out a couple of years ago and sold loads on Music Magpie, but basically kept anything I adore/is a special edition/I couldn't sell

* Vinyls of my fave albums

* Vinyls I've inherited - including some orchestral BBC recordings from something like the 1920's/1930's

Genuine question but why do people use the expression 'vinyls' these days? How exactly did that come about? I mean, in the record collecting community the plural of vinyl was always simply vinyl but since the format has become popular again it has changed.

Anyone know how or why this came about?

Vinyl still is the plural, I think it's just that people get it wrong these days. Plus there are a heck of a lot of people who are utterly useless when it comes to spelling and grammar and it makes sense to them to just add the 's' to the end when there are more than one. I work in an environment where you would expect a good level of grammatical skill but it never ceases to amaze me how rare it is to find someone who doesn't need their work proof reading before it goes out.

It amuses me how wound up some older people get about it though.

I'd say your music taste is quite different to mine looking at your list, but we do have 8 CDs in common:

Ashanti - Ashanti

Ashanti - Chapter II

Honeyz - Finally Found

Honeyz - End Of The Line

Honeyz - Wonder No.8

Mis-Teeq - Lickin on Both Sides

Nelly Furtado - Whoa Nelly

Nelly Furtado - Loose

Yeah, it's because spelling and grammar have basically gone out of the window these days. That said, language is constantly evolving so maybe in time "vinyls" will become the accepted plural, albeit through misuse?

I just use a good old-fashioned spreadsheet, like I do with many other things in my life!

I don’t think my collection is impressive as many here, but it is a reasonable size. I’ve never counted it, but I’ve got three kallax cubes of vinyl, 2.5 of CDs and one of just Sugababes releases. I’m also a collector of DVDs which makes up the majority of my physical media collection, at least by volume.

For now everything apart from the vinyl, Sugababes items and one cube of DVD/BluRay is packed neatly in the basement for lack of storage reasons

I don't know if this is any good but I was looking for a platform or app that I could use to document my music library, and I came across this;

https://www.kimicoapps.com/musicbuddy

It's a free app called MusicBuddy and it looks kike a handy tool to help you get organised.

Anyone use something similar?

I use Discogs because it then tells you the value of it too, as well as it being a community platform and marketplace

I also like that you can click for it to select a random album, good for those days when you’re not sure what you want to listen to as it regularly suggests something I’ve not listened to in ages

Does anyone else’s partners complain to you about your collecting habit?
Does anyone else’s partners complain to you about your collecting habit?

Nope, nobody's partners complain to me :kink:

🤣 I’m continually getting ‘Don’t you think you should maybe look through your collection and get rid of stuff you don’t like’
