Posted October 28, 2024Oct 28 A conversation involving Alanis Morissette in another thread inspired this. Obviously Duffy springs to mind, but who else went from absolutely dominating the chart to struggling to make an impact on the popular consciousness in such a short period of time? I definitely don't feel like Sabby C will be enjoying this level of success in three years time, nevermind five or ten, and I quite like her. GO!
October 28, 2024Oct 28 I guess Katy Perry springs to mind first. Huge name in the first half of the 2010s, generally seen somewhere around #45 if she's lucky these days.
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Jess Glynne. She had 2 successful albums and a record breaking 7 uk number one singles, however, her third album flopped hard as did every single released from it
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author Feel like Glynne left it too long, but apparently she's a bit of a diva so probably saw herself as the kind of global megastar that could get away with a long hiatus. I remember when she didn't turn up for Radio 1's Big Weekend because she was 'ill' or something, though the word on the street was that she'd been partying too hard supporting the Spice Girls.

Shoddy material not only this time round but in the Smile era too. Can't just be her age as the likes of Beyonce and Kylie are older/much older and doing just fine! The 2017 material didn't exactly set the chart world on fire but I was rather partial to the likes of Chained To The Rhythm, Swish Swish etc. Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by HiyaLuv2
October 28, 2024Oct 28 First name I thought of was Khalid. Had real potential then just became a bit of a nothing artist.

I wouldn’t say she fell particularly fast though she had a fair few big eras then followed the usual pop star trajectory. Leona Lewis is one that springs to mind for me she was huge for one era in the USA and then fell off a Cliff the next… she managed a bit longer in the U.K. but followed similar pattern. Alexandra Burke is another, Hear’Say they didn’t even last a year with their huge success going from 3 #1s in a row to a #4 single and #24 album was quite the bump back down to earth. Duffy is a good shout too. Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by spiceboy

Yep wasn’t even word on the street there were photos of her partying with Mel B after their final Wembley Stadium show. She really was such a crap support act for them god knows what they were thinking. Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by spiceboy
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Leona Lewis for sure. It's so unfair. True talent. An another name : Nelly Furtado.
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author I feel like Katy Perry fell off gradually and lasted a lot longer than many acts could ever dream of. Didn't Nelly F get a good five years out of it? Ironically, you can hear her on R1 a lot with a song that samples the last one they ever bothered with to my knowledge. Feel like if I went back to Big Hoops now it would sound really underwhelming without a donk on it. Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by HiyaLuv2
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author Emeli Sande Classic example, but feel like Zara pulled it back for a bit even if she probably has had her last hit. Can never write her off! Maybe I should throw Tinie (Tempah) into the ring. And Natasha Bedingfield (although Unwritten obviously came back two decades later). Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by HiyaLuv2
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author First name I thought of was Khalid. Had real potential then just became a bit of a nothing artist. Good shout. I only really liked Young Dumb & Broke but remember several more singles on the radio at his height but nothing since. When me and my mate went to R1's Big Weekend we just sat down and chatted facing away from the stage whilst he was on. Boring as feck. And the Disclosure collabs were amongst the most lifeless and tedious chart hits I've ever heard. Will never understand what people got out of those! Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by HiyaLuv2
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author I would also like to throw The Darkness in the ring. Though they probably had no idea they'd get that big in the first place to be fair. Would you count Franz Ferdinand? They definitely left it too long between albums 2 and 3. You could probably add countless 'landfill indie' bands that were huge in the mid-2000s and pop toast by 2008. Naming no names but one of them sang about America, hoping to get a huge hit in America. Edited October 28, 2024Oct 28 by HiyaLuv2
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Author When I started this I was thinking of 'one era wonders' but definitely would include Jake Bugg in this. Two era wonder!
October 28, 2024Oct 28 Within the space of one month in 2021, Rancid Eddie blew up, went top 10 on Australian Spotify (+ top 200 UK/Ireland/Norway), got cancelled and then just obliterated from any sort of public discourse. They only get mentioned about once every 2 months on Twitter. It's all so quick that you can see the entire daily chart run on kworb For a British example, Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong had some hits, their album got good reviews, but then it never came out and they broke up.
October 28, 2024Oct 28 lol who said Katy Perry she stayed at the top for like 5 albums and 10 years lol that's why Nelly Furtado doesn't fit either has to be someone who fall big after album 1 like Emelie Sandé for instance
