December 14, 2024Dec 14 Author A very low selling Christmas top ten was headed up by a very high selling No.1, with Leona Lewis clearing 571,253 copies of her X Factor winning single A Moment Like This, a power ballad previously used in 2002 as the American Idol coronation single for Kelly Clarkson. The song went to No.1 in the US but Kelly never released it as a single here - instead we got Miss Independent as her debut single - so it was an obvious choice. Leona was an astounding vocalist and a popular winner and would go on to global success a year later with Bleeding Love. She sold well over 10 times more than Take That's Patience at No.2, which was on the way down after a month at the top and shifted 55,559 copies, although their comeback album Beautiful World was Christmas No.1, selling 443,070 copies in Christmas week alone. The chart rules of 2006 had changed again compared to a year earlier, and you were now allowed to chart one week before a physical release - for a maximum of 52 weeks (a very odd rule, why not just allow the download sales as soon as a song was released??). Anyway, that rule accounts for the huge climbs in this chart, none bigger than McFly's Sorry's Not Good Enough, which vaulted 95 places to No.3 on just 21,030 sales, fewer than 200 sales ahead of another Girls Aloud winter cover - this time I Think We're Alone Now, which was remixed from the more bare bones version on The Sound of Girls Aloud album but still ended up being one of their lower selling singles overall. We were treated to two dance songs in the top ten this year, although Cascada's Savage Garden cover was a little unnecessary, especially when they had great songs like Bad Boy and (soon to be released) Miracle on the album too. The Pogues were back again as stocks were still available of their 2005 re-release, enabling their download sales to count too, while the only other Christmas song in the top ten was Cliff's valiant but failed attempt to score a No.1 in the 2000s - the lyrically naff 21st Century Christmas. In the top 20, Crazy Frog delivered a Christmas hit for a second year in a row but the novelty was wearing off and its Wham! cover stalled at No.16, ahead of a big climber from Razorlight. Also in the top 20 were a song from kids TV show Lazy Town and an awful Aladdin cover from Katie Price and Peter Andre. Just outside were three other Christmas songs - Slade had a physical re-release this year so their 1973 classic Christmas No.1 was back up to No.21, actor Ricky Tomlinson scored a second hit with Christmas My A*se while 2005 X Factor runner up, former binman Andy Abraham teamed up with TV presenter Michael Underwood to score his biggest hit single. More big climbs came from James Morrison and Queen (who issued an electro flavoured take on Another One Bites The Dust), Mary J Blige releasing another Christmas week single and ending up at almost the same position as last year's Be Without You, sampling 2005 No.4 hit Hate It Or Love It by The Game on her new entry. Two dance singles also debuted - Micky Modelle followed up their brilliant top 10 hit Dancing In The Dark with a less brilliant track, while Sharam entered on downloads and would vault into the top ten the following week. The final new entry in the top 75 was angelic female group All Angels, who covered Robbie's Angels - this band is now more famous for featuring actress Charlotte Ritchie, who went on to have lead roles in comedies including Fresh Meat and Ghosts. 2006 was also the year BuzzJack launched! So for the first time we can look at how BuzzJack reacted to the chart at the time, by throwing it back to the Chart Show thread from that year. See the full thing for yourself here for a throwback: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=25979 And a few nuggets below to show you why these threads are an enjoyable nostalgic read: Simon on Micky Modelle: ohmy.gif Micky Modelle should be higher even though i dont like it that muchRedsox on Queen: This is an improvement from the Wyclef Jean remix from 1998 which charted higher than the Queen original from 1980. But I like the Weird Al parody version called "Another One Rides The Bust" Ryan on Wind It Up: Poor Gwen sad.gif This is far superior to her other singles too sleep.gifMart!n on Chris Cornell: Bond, Mikey Bond, I've got a licence to thrill cool2.gif Grandwicky accurately predicting the future of the Christmas charts, with huge new chart rules weeks away from coming into force to allow anything to chart without a physical release: With the new rules could we be seeing just about the same songs in the top ten every year from now on? ohmy.gifAlex aka $ktofi on Leona: I find Shayne more likeable... Leona is like a robot No emotions, no anger, no joy... Edited December 14, 2024Dec 14 by gooddelta
December 14, 2024Dec 14 I remember I was on holiday before Christmas as I think I remember seeing that Leona won the X Factor on the airport newspaper front pages. Clubland style dance made a comeback in the second half of 2006 with Cascada and Micky Modelle/Jessy, after a lesser year in 2005. I still didn't like that sort of dance at the time so preferred the likes of Boogie 2Nite and PATT Party All The Time. The latter is a late hit to the mid 00s 80s remix trend. I suppose Cascada's cover of Truly Madly Deeply allowed them to have longevity in their chart career - I prefer 'Miracle'. I don't think I have heard much their song 'Bad Boy' that you mention. The Girls Aloud cover sounds quite Uniting Nations/Sunblock production-wise. Thats the second 00s Christmas chart (after Pascal/Karen Parry's eurotrance version in 2002) that had a cover of Tiffany's 'I Think We're Alone Now' in it. The 2002 one is more nostalgic. 'My Love' by Justin Timberlake and TI is great loved it at the time, also the drop sounds like 2013-4 EDM trap ahead of its time. Chris Cornell's Bond theme is very good too. The Buzzjack quotes from the time are very interesting. Edited December 15, 2024Dec 15 by TheSnake
December 15, 2024Dec 15 Why did GA always release a lazy cover in December lol! Think that was Cliffs final chance at no1s in 6 decades, was close the week before it. This would be the end of the chart era as ALL downloads counted in Jan 2007, so didn’t ’Chasing Cars’ jump back into the top 10!?
December 15, 2024Dec 15 Author Think that was Cliffs final chance at no1s in 6 decades, was close the week before it. This would be the end of the chart era as ALL downloads counted in Jan 2007, so didn’t ’Chasing Cars’ jump back into the top 10!? Kind of, I think Cliff was about 7k off. Take That sold about 30k that week and then accelerated back to 55k on Christmas week. Yep, exactly, at this point it wasn't allowed in the chart as the 52-week rule was in force at this point. It soon came back as soon as this restriction was lifted. We also saw the return of Billie's Honey To The Bee to the top 20, as Chris Moyles was testing the new rules
December 16, 2024Dec 16 Not a great looking top 20 for me despite how stellar 2006 was musically. Some bad cover songs here and Lazytown 3. McFly - Sorry's Not Good Enough (98) 6. The Pogues feat Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (10) 8. Booty Luv - Boogie 2Nite (5) 9. Akon Ft Eminem - Smack That (6) 10. Chris Cornell - You Know My Name (7) 15. Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End) (11) 17. Razorlight - Before I Fall To Pieces (46) 20. Beyoncé - Irreplaceable (14) From those I know outside I do vaguely recall the Ricky Tomlinson one, pretty sure I've reheard it in a mixcloud chart when going over those lol. Didn't realise Slade made the top 40 and even just missing out on top 20. Andy Abraham does have a top 40 to his name? Crikey. James Morrison's track was alright but a major step down after the first two hits. 'Party All The Time' is a banger though!
