January 3Jan 3 Author I just want to thank everyone for their patience, and sorry if reveals were not as exciting as they could have been. That Top 5 has to be one of the strongest personally, and I've actually voted for all 5 of them but in reverse order :o. Always nice to see a new winner, and so happy I managed to keep my Top 10 streak (thank you Dan and fiesta for that late surge ) for each contests so far (same goes to Dandy*) Happy New Year everyone.
January 3Jan 3 Well done, Severin. I think that's your second song contest win. I liked the Curve song and gave it five points. Thanks Addy for a great hosting job again. 22nd place is a bit disappointing for Prefab Sprout. Thanks to all those who gave them some points, especially Julian for the 12 right at the end.
January 3Jan 3 Congrats Severin! I think I heard a snippet of the Curve song on release, but it sounded great to discover in full all these years later. I've now finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th & 9th (as well as 11th & 16th) within this series of contests - they've all been songs I've known and loved for years so happy to share them regardless. Thank you Addy for hosting!
January 3Jan 3 Rather pleasingly, I've now finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th (twice) so I'm already only 3 away from completing the top 10! *.*
January 3Jan 3 Back to my usual place of lingering just outside the top 10 in these then! I'll take 12th though, thanks all x I voted for all of the top 3, but pleased to see a lesser known name winning. Congrats Severin! Shame it wasn't on streaming, a very intense listen. I'd also like to thank Whoddy for finally clicking the title of the song from the Spongebob movie end credits *. Thanks for hosting Addy ^_^
January 3Jan 3 Thanks for hosting this Addy and congrats to Severin! Honestly I thought this was so far out of my wheelhouse (even more than Nuggets tbh) so not surprised I flopped, but 1997 was a category that I could at least find something and I thought “when in doubt send something from DDR” so that’s what I did :P “Love” was on the 2nd iteration of the series and the only one I thought was safe enough in the time period to send (everything else was either before or much after which didn’t help things) :drama: I’m sure my entries here will be sporadic but it was fun! Thanks to everyone who voted Sonic Dream especially the medal positions!
January 3Jan 3 How many unique winners has this particular song contest had now then? 6 - Jade, Addy (3 times), Chez, Dandy, Dobbo and Severin
January 4Jan 4 Oops sorry I wasn't here to comment along live but quickly caught up now - first order of business, I need to post my PM as you r00dly didn't include my commentary which contains a very fun fact :P 12 Various Artists - No. 3 10 Curve - Chinese Burn 8 Fluke - Absurd (Whitewash Edit) 7 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Into My Arms 6 Placebo - Bruise Pristine 5 Monolake - Arte 4 Delerium - Remembrance 3 Ocean Colour Scene - Get Blown Away 2 Eels - Your Lucky Day In Hell 1 Spiritualized - Broken Heart (yes I looked it up and 'Various Artists' is the actual artist name of that 'No. 3' song - a crafty alias of one Torsten Pröfrock, rather than actually being various artists x (and fun fact, Torsten is now also a member of Monolake! Though he wasn't at the time 'Arte' came out)) A strong list of songs here from a great year in music ~ I did already know the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds song but not heard it for yonks (didn't recognise it by name) so was lovely to hear it again but it's beaten out by some minimal vibes and some maximal bangers. Think I might have heard the Eels song before too, sounded familiar. The rest were new to me. Commiserations to Davinia, Ween, Depeche Mode, Tin Tin Out and Fiona Apple. Hope there were a few fans of my Japanese shoegaze track, it was a quick find on /r/listentothis but I fell for its charms pretty instantly and didn't feel the need to keep looking x I was wondering if anyone might be thrown off when hearing it expecting it to be the act who made the UK top 20 hit 'Tonite' but nope, entirely underrated :magic: After my temporary high coming top 3 in the last edition of this I'm back down to more familiar territory, although by one metric this is still my 2nd best performing entry ever - it is only the second one to not finish in the bottom 7, pushing the boat out to bottom 8  Was happy enough to finish that high though considering I got off to a veeery sluggish start and felt destined for another bottom 3 shortly into my quick catchup read - was saved by a couple of medals, thank you very much Cow for the gold and Jester for the bronze plus the coveted 7 from Savan  (I did hope you'd be a fan x). Thanks Scene, Dandy and Herbs for the remainder of my points as well, I suppose it's a very lowkey track that'd be easy to just blend into the background so go figure it didn't set the scoreboard on fire but I found it really charming. Was also resigned for a while to this just being a predictable and underwhelming Depeche Mode win (sorry AH Gold, I did like it enough for a commiseration but it's nowhere near their best work, would have been a straight repeat of my whelmed reaction to Muse winning the last Bop Idol ) so absolutely thrilled that my 10 pointer Curve came through to snatch the win at the end  I actually did think or at least hope that could be in the mix to win but wasn't confident enough to make a prediction. I only know Curve from having been sent to BJSC before with the also excellent 'Horror Head', I liked this song even more though, right up my street. Well done on the win Severin! Great to see Delerium finishing on the podium too and a couple more of my big faves Fluke and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds also coming top 10. I know I said I also didn't want Placebo to win but aw 17th is much too low for that! Both Monolake and Various Artists robbed as well, where's the love for minimal electronica x (I did kind of assume the latter was !!! and therefore would be getting deducted, although that barely made a difference to its position in the end oops). Also gah me losing the battle of the 'Super' artists by just 3 points :P Thanks for the hosting Addy, very enjoyable contest :jump:
January 4Jan 4 thanks for hosting Addy, plus everyone who voted Denki Groove into the top ten! ;-) found plenty of high quality tunes to vote for in this, I'll be keeping an eye out for future editions~
January 4Jan 4 Wow! Thank you all so much for the votes and the kind words. I thought Curve might do OK but really had no expectations of higher than just inside the Top 10, as I don't tend to send entries with broad appeal, if previous contest results are anything to go by. Shame that I was otherwise engaged last night, so apologies for the late reaction. For those who liked them I would definitely recommend checking out their first three albums and early EPs. They were big on the underground in the early '90s and kind of laid the template that Garbage took and added a Pop polish to. There was some bitterness from the Curve camp about that but Shirley and co were glowing in their praise of Curve. They were one of my highlights from Glastonbury '92 as well. Curve had originally split in '94 having not quite cracked a Top 20 hit and the comeback didn't garner the same hype although Chinese Burn did get some airplay and was probablt most well known for appearing in this advert - EEtLV0o4MT Once again thanks for the great scores and well done to everyone else. It was a tough call to pick a favourite between all of my top 5. It was particularly great to be reminded how good I'm a Tree is as well. I'd forgot about that song.
January 4Jan 4 This is the updated league table after 8 contests. Addy's 7 point lead is now cut down to just 1 point after dandy* finished 3rd in this contest. There is now an even bigger gap from 2nd to 3rd place. 10 points for Severin's win move him up from 19th to 12th place. 1. 50 Addy! 2. 49 dandy* 3. 34 jimwatts 3. 34 AH Gold 5. 30 Dobbo 6. 24 King Rollo 7. 23 Jade 8. 22 Bjork 9. 21 Jester 10. 18 Chez Wombat 11. 17 Popchartfreak 12. 16 Severin 13. 15 awardinary 13. 15 JulianT 15. 14 danG 16. 10 Ansel 16. 10 Brer 18. 9 fiesta 19. 7 lewistgreen 20. 6 ClaudiaKinkleman 20. 6 *Ben* 22. 4 Roba 23. 3 !!! 24. 2 gooddelta 25. 1 seven.
January 4Jan 4 Once again the threat of a potentially hosted contest by yours truly has been narrowly avoided. Phew! Thanks to all who voted for Depeche Mode’s Home. Yes, they may be a well known name but it’s a quality song regardless and I’m thrilled it came second. Thanks to Addy for another great contest!
January 4Jan 4 brilliant to see Tin Tin Out make the top five here as one of my favourite underrated hits of the year. :cheer: great discovery from Delirium there too, I've never bothered to look much beyond 'Silence' from them and the Curve song is a worthy winner too, congrats!
January 5Jan 5 some great songs, Im glad Curve won over Depeche Mode. Home was easily the best song of the contest but a too-well known song that imho shouldn't have taken part. I used to be a huge Curve fan, I even have their Doppelganger album ob vinyl, they had kinda lost me by 97 as a fan but glad to discover some of thir songs. for me the best thing of the contest was discovering the Spiritualized song. That song was a huge discovery, love it and I've been listening to the album 24/7 for the last week. I knew of the album but had never actually heard it so thanks @Chez glad my Fiona song did well. I think if it had been Criminal, she could have won. And personally I think it should have been allowed. sure if has lots of streams on Spotify but thats from US not from UK. It has always been a classic in the US but in the UK no one knows it. And thts what this contest should be about. Songs that initially failed to chart but are hidden gems and are kinda lost classics.
January 5Jan 5 Thanks for hosting and organizing ddy, and congrats to Severin, and thanks to everyone who voted for Eels - they are an under-rated quirky act, so 11th was pretty good (not to mention 11th overall pour moi), I was hoping for at least one full marks, so thanks Jester for that! :cheer: My fave before the contest was Prefab Sprout, always liked that one, and I was vaguely aware of Tin Tin Out, Depeche Mode, but the rest were pretty much new to me. Biggest surprise newie is Denki Groove and the also the exciting Supergrass track, though I would have expected that to be good as I always liked everything they did. North & South was a surprise catchy pop tune, borrowing inspiration from elsewhere but cool and amusing.
January 5Jan 5 5th in the end :o Never thought Jam & Spoon could end up so high. Thank you for all the votes and thank you Addy for the invitation to this contest while BJSC is pausing. :cheer:
