49. Enya - Anywhere Is 137pts

Writers - Enya, Roma Ryan

Top points - ...ready for it 25, rio309 23, Mango 19, marcinjaro 19

From 1995, this was the third and final top 10 single for the Irish singer but she cashed in the following year after taking legal action against the Fugees for using a sample from her song 'Boadicea' on their number 1 hit 'Ready Or Not' without her permission.

Although Selena Gomez & The Scene had three top 20 albums from 2009 to 2011, this was their only top 40 single. Selena will have a second chance to reach the final when the second semi commences.

47. Cher - One By One 144pts

Writers - Anthony Griffiths, Cher

Top points - Dante77 23, AH Gold 22, Popchartfreak 22

This was taken from Cher's 21st album 'It's A Man's World' which was mainly made up of cover versions of songs by male vocalists but this one was newly written for the album. It was the fourth of six top 10 hits for her in the 90s.

46. Chicane featuring Tom Jones - Stoned In Love 153pts

Tom Jones has said that he had never heard of Chicane before being approached to provide the vocals on this song but agreed after liking what had been recorded up to that point. Chicane still have Poppiholla to come in the other semi-final.

Five Madonna songs have progressed to this stage, will any of them reach the final? Nothing Really Matters was the fifth single to be taken from her 1998 album 'Ray Of Light'.

Any song by that artist is likely to be popular tbf

I do have a big soft spot for “Anywhere Is” and the Sparks track is very good… otherwise not too fussed so far.
Wow NRM not even making the final !! 😔

I Don't Care is a wonderful track from Shakespears Sister, I probably prefer it to Stay and it's one of an almost flawless run of singles from the Hormonally Yours album.

Sad to see Enya out too, it's not an all time favourite or anything but she's one of those artists that reminds me of how diverse the charts were in that era

Love Rik Mayall but it was never going to get any points from me, Sparks I have my ticket for June at the Apollo ahead of their new album and Amateur Hour deserved better - but Something For The Girl With Everything from that era is better, that has a new animated fan video which is brilliant. I Don't Care is too low too, and Cher way too low, vocally she was doing new things and the song is top notch. Stoned In Love is a goodie, and Madonna I didnt have enough room for but it's good.

44. Soul Asylum - Runaway Train 162pts

From 1993, this was Soul Asylum's biggest hit and the song they are best known for. It won a Grammy award for best rock song. The American group's four remaining top 40 hits all peaked between 26 and 34.

Madonna quickly loses another song with this one from 2008, taken from her eleventh album, 'Hard Candy'. It featured a vocal contribution from Pharrell Williams.

With the strings provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, this was the biggest hit single for the Smashing Pumpkins and one of only two to reach the top 10. It wins a tie-break over Give It 2 Me by 15 votes to 13.

41. Prefab Sprout - The King Of Rock 'n' Roll 168pts

Writer - Paddy McAloon

Top points - seven. 24, Jester 21, Jaz13music 18, marcinjaro 18, King Rollo 18

From 1988, this turned out to be the only top 20 hit for Prefab Sprout. Written about a fictitious 1950s singer who was only remembered for one novelty song, the single was produced by Thomas Dolby.

Prefab Sprout are local legends where I live, takes me about 10 minutes to drive to where these guys formed! My A Level media teacher is good mates with Paddy from what I recall. Would've given this more points but it gets played on one of those hot dog themed coin pusher games at a local arcade I go to often, and it does get rather annoying...

40. Phil Collins - I Wish It Would Rain Down 169pts

Writer - Phil Collins

Top points - King Rollo 25, ...ready for it 24, vancey 24

With Eric Clapton playing lead guitar throughout the song, this was the second single taken from Phil's album '...But Seriously'. It spent six weeks at number 1 in Canada and was the best selling single of 1990 there.

A couple of losses from my first and second round votes in 'Runaway Train' and 'The King Of Rock 'n' Roll', I also gave a few points to 'Tonight, Tonight' here.
