36. Garbage - Why Do You Love Me 192pts

Writers - Garbage

Top points - Severin 24, West 23, Viper* 23

From 2005, this was Garbage's highest charting single since 1996's 'Stupid Girl'. Their previous three top 10 hits had all peaked at number 9. It turned out to be the group's final top 20 single.

35. Uniting Nations - Out Of Touch 192pts

Writers - Daryl Hall, John Oates

Top points - Lee_J11 24, Simon. 20, Mack 18, AH Gold 18

Out Of Touch was the sixth and final US number 1 single by Daryl Hall and John Oates. This cover version by the duo Uniting Nations came out in 2004. One half of that duo was Daz Simpson who two years later represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. The single was the best seller in Romania in 2005. It wins a tie-break over Why Do You Love Me by 16 votes to 14.

I also love 'I'll Remember', a classic Madonna ballad, so I'm sad to see them both drop out at this stage. 'Rain' is an even better Madonna ballad but I fear we'll be seeing it sooner rather than later.

Little did I know when I wrote this that 'Rain' would be the next song to drop 🙈 it's one of my favourite things Madonna has released so I'm gutted it didn't do better.

'Cool For The Summer' was pretty good at the time though I don't go back to it much these days.

'Why Do You Love Me' is one of Garbage's best, definitely the best song that wasn't from their first two albums. Such an singalong earworm of a chorus!

34. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better 193pts

Writers - Marvin Hamlisch, Carole Bayer Sager

In the 70s and 80s, Carly Simon had one top ten hit every five years, starting in 1972 with 'You're So Vain'. In 1977, this theme to the James Bond Film 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was the second. The fourth one, in 1987, was appropriately titled 'Coming Around Again'.

33. Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night 195pts

Writers - Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly

Top points - Julian_ 23, Leonardo 22, Mark223 22

This is the highest placed wild card. Cyndi Lauper's version finished 30th in the other semi-final but had a lower score, 190 points, so I think we'll call this a draw. Jeff Lynne took Roy's vocal from his 1987 recording and added a fresh production. The song was also a hit for Celine Dion, reaching number 27 in 2003.

Hero was originally written for a film soundtrack and was intended for Gloria Estefan to sing but Mariah Carey liked it so much she kept it for herself, changing some of the lyrics. It was her eighth US number 1 and fourth UK top 10 hit.

Helped by its use in BBC trailers, Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros reached number 24 in 2006. Three years later, this reworked version by Chicane was a bigger hit.

A favourite of X Factor producers to use as background music, this was the fourth out of five top 10 singles for the Lebanese musician.

Sad to see Carly and Chicane out. The former is the best bond theme, whilst the latter is a great example of how to sample

I've already made my feelings clear on which version of 'I Drove All Night' I prefer so I'm happy to concede a draw between Cyndi's and Roy's versions!

'Happy Ending' is a lovely pop song, definitely up there with Mika's best.

Agreed that 'Poppiholla' is a really worthy companion to 'Hoppípolla'.

I hadn't heard the former in ages so I'm pleased that this rate reminded me of it.

Happy Ending is probably my favourite Mika song. I really enjoy Roy's version of I Drove All Night, probably should have given it more points. Despite loving Sigur Ros and also loving some of Chicane's work, Poppiholla never really clicked with me.

Oh no, I lost my 25 </3 I adore Hoppipolla and wouldn't normally approve of it being touched at all, but this really works as a reinvention, and still rnetaining a lot of the emotion that made the original stand out presented in a different way.

From 1992, this was Crowded House's biggest hit and only top 10 single. It only has about a third of the total Spotify streams of 'Don't Dream It's Over' which failed to reach the top 20.

It was a surprise to me that this just scraped into the semi-finals, finishing in 100th place in the first round, just a point above the cut-off point. It's not as lucky this time, just missing out on a place in the final. It was Elton John's eighth single release but the first to reach the top 40. It was voted by the British public as their favourite Elton John song in a 2017 ITV poll.

26. Suede - Animal Nitrate 219pts

Writers - Brett Anderson, Bernard Butler

Top points - My...Tuppence!! 25, dandy* 24, marcinjaro 23

This finishes just one point below the song in 25th place. It would have needed two more points to qualify as a score of 220 would have seen it lose a tie-break on the number of votes. Released in 1993, Animal Nitrate was Suede's first top 10 single.

Argh no! Animal Nitrate definitely deserved to be in the final, really gutted that it hasn't qualified 😢

Gahhh at losing One Step Beyond at the final hurdle! Weather With You was my one pointer and was very lucky to get it, I chose a song at random as I didn't fancy giving 24 songs points and missing one. Shame the point didn't make a difference but hey ho 😂
