From 1971, this was the second of two top 10 hits for the singer from Arkansas. It was also a US number 1 single. Tina Turner's 1983 cover version went one place higher, reaching number 6.

Everybody Hurts is one of my favourite songs by probably my favourite band ever. It’s also massively important to my wife and I. It was there for us during our baby son’s long illness and, after it h

Get Together was the third single to come from Madonna's 2005 album 'Confessions On A Dance Floor'. 'Jump' was originally scheduled to be the third release but the record company switched to this song as it was already being downloaded as an album track twice as much as 'Jump'.

This was the song that finished one point above 'Animal Nitrate' to qualify from the second semi-final in 25th place. It was the first of four top 10 hits for The Cure. I think I've mentioned before in these polls that they peaked at 5, 6, 7 and 8 (not in that order) but it's worth mentioning again.

This was the only UK hit single for the group from Ohio, also reaching the top of the Billboard chart in 1976. The lyrics were about their attempts to transition from hard rock to the funk/disco sound that was becoming more popular. They split up in 1979.

I'm a huge fan of The Cure but 'Get Together' is actually my favourite to drop out today. Madonna was on fire during the Confessions era

'Smokers...', 'White Lines...' and 'The Lovecats' are my biggest losses so far - surprised the latter only just made the final but I'm glad it did.

Nothing I dislike in this final, I actually prefer 'Get Together' to some other singles from that era, though not really a Madonna classic for me.

Al Green and Wild Cherry have been pretty big losses for me, both huge 70s classics that I love. There's 2 versions of Let's Stay Together on Spotify with one of them having the backing vocalists mixed quieter, it's much better. Out of the others today The Lovecats is one of the weaker Cure songs I've heard, and my first listen of Get Together was thanks to this rate and it sounded so dated to me (not in a good way) so it's only 1 of 2 songs I dislike out of the 50 here.

I still don't understand why 'Get Together' has finished higher than Madonna's other #7 singles when the others are FAR superior but there you go!

Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors is another big loss, although I'm pleasantly surprised it made it all the way to the final given it's not really that remembered very much these days, at least from my perspective.

The Cure and Editors are two bands that I've just never "got". Aside from a couple of songs each, neither band do absolutely anything for me at all.

One started as an instrumental with Pharrell's vocal added to this version which gave the Swedish House Mafia their first top 40 hit in 2010.

This double A side single was the third release from the Sugababes' second album, following two successive number 1 hits. One 50 point score means it wins a tie-break over One (Your Name).

36. Klaxons - Golden Skans 992pts

From 2007, Golden Skans was the only top 10 hit for Klaxons. The single came in at number 16 based on downloads only with the CD being available two weeks later so might have charted higher if they had been released at the same time. The video was an homage to the one for 'Can You Feel It' by The Jacksons.

I struggled a bit with where to rank the Sugababes as I find “Angels With Dirty Faces” a bit meh but “Stronger” is right up there with my favourite 00s pop band tracks - so atmospheric.

I used to listen to all 6 SHM singles as their own mini album - I loved them all and “One (Your Name)” has good nostalgia value.

“Golden Skans” is my favourite of this batch though: a beautifully crafted track and I love the distant, dreamy sound to it.

Catching up with these results - errr WTF at 'A New England' being a distant last place?! I guess it's maybe one of the less well known songs on the list (and I'm biased because my mum loves it so I heard it loads growing up lol, as well as the Billy Bragg original) but c'mon you guys xx

Also already lost Swedish House Mafia and Klaxons from my top 10, would have hoped the latter would do a bit better (landfill indie classic indeed) although about what I would probably have expected for the former. Editors should be higher too.

Ought to look up the semi 2 results to see if anything narrowly missed out which I might have saved if I remembered to vote in that (sorry for missing it oop, at least remembered to come back for the final).
