FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read the pinned thread regarding this.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 200 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

It appears Spotify hasn’t updated for yesterday so Wednesday’s streams are still a mystery. I was interested to see how doechii did

Gaga has 3 songs in NMF. 1-20-35

Abracadabra is now #3 on HHUK.

Must say that I'm impressed, and she has shit ton of variants so I can see the album doing amazing numbers.

Spotify Update - Wednesday 5th March

Messy is No.1 with 384k - However the 2 versions of Anxiety combined add up to 431k streams 👀

Alex Warren up 3 to No.6 - new peak

Enters at #29! HUGE!

29 DOECHII - Anxiety (NEW)

64 Benson Boone - Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else (Up 48)

67 Paramore - Hard Times (Up 3)

74 WizTheMc, bees & honey - Show Me Love (Up 24)

106 Sydney Rose - We Hug Now

121 Ghost - Satanized (NEW)

141 Alex Warren - Before You Leave Me (Re-Entry)

161 Bhad Bhabie - Ms. Whitman (Up 13)

Fairly sure the two versions of Anxiety won't be combined as Sleepy Hallow's the lead artist on one and Doechii's the lead on the other, but amazing to see the latter with such a big debut!

Benson climbing big! cheer

I must say streaming numbers can humble ones opinions. I have found this era of Lady Gaga to be stock standard and formula driven and it belongs in the past. She could of done these same songs 15-20 years ago. These streaming numbers say otherwise. It could be partly because she is a legacy act and that generates interest (Kylie for example) and it could be it;s a sound that resonates at this time or combination of both. Either way, good luck to her

I think this is missing the entire point of the album! Having watched her interviews, it is her finally coming full circle since her humble beginnings and honouring her music, career and all the influences that have built it. Some of the tracks are purposefully reminiscent of her different eras, it's intentional but they've been pumped up with much, much different production with the new producers she has on board with this era.

To me it is the same old. From the opening beat of all the songs I've heard so far,you just know it is her. I am not saying that is a bad thing, iconic artists tend to do that (Think Tina, before a lyric was sung, you just knew it was her) and I am geniunely impressed that people are getting into it. I just dont find this era new or fresh but streaming numbers suggest other wise

I see that Ghost song 'Satanized' at #121 is brand new rather than an old one taking off on TikTok.

I wonder if a second top 40 could be on the cards a few years after 'Mary On A Cross'

This is interesting because Gaga has always been blamed from hopping from genre to another and delivering albums that sounds like nothing that's out there and "popular" (ARTPOP, jazz, ASIB balladry) and when she reflects all eras and influences at once (except jazz lol) it's "same old"?

JADE has just released an Apple Music-exclusive cover of Madonna’s Frozen and it sounds magnificent! Hoping it can enter the Apple chart at some point today. 👀

that Jennie-Dua Lipa Handlebars song giving a big push on Spotify

insta-added as track #6 on HH, the power of Dua <3

Great to see that Ghost have enough of a fanbase now for their new music to make the Spotify chart on release!

That wouldn't have been a full 24 hours either I believe.

Thats very good for them, 90K streams on a midweek release without playlist

On the Lady Gaga debate, I for one am quite happy that the new songs sound like her early stuff - so far I've heard 'Vanish Into You' and 'Garden Of Eden' and both are brilliant, particularly the former! Big catchy choruses, that's what's missing from pop these days. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album shortly, hopefully it's just as good as those songs.

The first half of the album already appearing on Apple

Blamed by who? You? I find her boring, my opinion as you have yours.
