Posted March 21Mar 21 I was just scanning through Radio 1 today and I heard the announcement due to the marathon for Comic Relief, the Top 40 show with Jack Saunders may be cancelled or delayed.But I do know that the chart itself will be published. Can anyone help confirm this?

March 21Mar 21 Author To be fair, there was a lot of heavy publicity for the marathon but still every little penny counts as it's for Comic Relief.@JosephBoone will be locking the chart thread down for now until further notice.
March 21Mar 21 Not on this occasion! As someone else mentioned I don't remember them ever cancelling it for Comic Relief before...

There's no reason why it doesn't work on Radio 1 other than Radio 1 being a bit annoying on days like today.Effectively, the chart show is usually an excuse for Radio 1 to play songs that they're either currently playlisting, or have previously playlisted, or will likely playlist in the future. It rates well the last time I heard and likely gets a casual audience regardless due to the time of days it's on, so it's pretty safe on Radio 1 I'd have thought - especially considering they devote another hour to it on a Sunday.
March 21Mar 21 I probably speak for most people with this but I do just wish whoever's in charge at R1 changed their current approach to the chart show, there's so much missed potential. They've shown a clear neglect/dislike towards it over the past year. Jack is a good presenter and clearly passionate but he's obviously being held back by producers/higher ups who are completely void of it. The chart has always been about celebrating the success of artists and today they seem to have forgotten that. They play it safe to maintain a casual audience with the track selections/not bringing up chart trivia often/constant shoutouts. If someone gave the show a proper rehaul (it's been the same format mostly since June 2018) and they didn't pull things like today I'd be completely happy with it staying on Radio 1!

A more systematic approach to deciding what to play - it should always (barring exceptional circumstances like no available edit / political themes / artist grossness like 6ix9ine) be new entries, re-entries and songs climbing to a peak that get priority. There's always room for the big hits lingering around amongst these, so there's no need to worry about a lack of familiar songs for a casual audience.Other than that and avoiding incidents like yesterday, I'm not sure what more really needs to be changed. The casual audience will make up a large amount of their viewership, though I do think a few more chart facts could be mentioned without them being put off (without having to delve into explaining ACR every week to an audience that largely won't care). I'm not sure how the format could really change, when the songs are selected properly it's the perfect happy medium I think.
March 23Mar 23 The problem is (not to sound like Hadji) it’s a drive time show so they replay the same songs so the audience won’t be polarised by it hence huge dance floor hits and MOR songs in the chart for 20 weeks always get played every week so the passive drive time audience are familiar with the music. A Sunday afternoon chart show would give them less reason to focus on the above issues. Also, did they not do the same to the chart one year when the Teen Awards or something were on? Seems like they ditch it whoever something more important to them comes along.
March 23Mar 23 They sidelined it for the Teen Awards at least once or twice back when it was on Sundays. It really isn't a common occurrence to give them some credit - they usually work around Big Weekend, Glastonbury, etc.I don't think it being a drivetime show is any excuse to skip new entries when there's still plenty of time if they're that insistent on playing the likes of Lose Control! There's a balance and they used to strike it perfectly until the past year or so (and even then, I do think they often get it right, it's just become slightly more regular that a new entry gets skipped, which isn't a good thing).
