Sonnet by The Verve just came into my head and it got me thinking, can you recall any others that got loads of radio play but weren't recognised as official singles for whatever reason? In this case it couldn't chart because it was released as part of a box set of 12" singles.

I have also got: Don't Panic/God Put A Smile Upon Your Face/The Hardest Part by Coldplay and Idioteque by Radiohead, the latter of which didn't come out in any physical form as a single? There must be a few more. Obviously it wouldn't even matter now as most things don't even have a physical release.

Go!

Clean Baby Sleep White Noise (Looped)? Can’t deny it’s not a big song ;)

  • Not the same but some of this is reminding me of Daniel Powter. Wasn't he on for a 2nd top 40 (Free Loop), but as a version of Bad Day was on the single, it made the former ineligible to chart?

Kylie's 'Your Disco Needs You' springs to mind.

And also 'I'm Loving It' by Justin Timberlake from the McDonalds ads, I can't remember what the deal was with that, was it just never released as a single?

'Sonnet' is absolutely sublime btw, what a song heart

I'm thinking of Bruno's Talking to the Moon and the OG Take Me Home, Country Roads, if they both fit in with the intention of the OP.

I think this can happen today with a song that is not among the top 3 most streamed from the album (ACR applied) at any time. But it must be a rare coincidence and cannot think of any.

Brutal by Olivia Rodrigo ?

I don't think any of those are particularly well known?

If we're talking Oasis then surely The Masterplan, Acquiesce, Champagne Supernova and Morning Glory would be way way ahead of Don't Go Away lol

She's Electric gets on Radio 2 so much you'd think it'd been a real single at the time.

Another one: Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys - gets on Radio 1 as a throwback a lot so guessing that was some sort of airplay-only single, I was having a bit of a break from the radio around then so not sure.

Yeah only just noticed Jóga didn't chart after seeing it on a Top of the Pops repeat, turns out it was ineligible as it was only released as a "as a three-CD and VHS box set"!

Is one of her best songs too.

No need to Lol

:/

Don’t Go Away was a single in many territories same as Don’t Panic or Sonnet

Space Cowboy (another alias for Norman Cooke / Fatboy Slim) released a cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” in 2002. It had loads of radio play and was on course for the Top 10 but disqualified due to having 3 remixes on top of a B side.

I never realised Space Cowboy was Norman Cooke 😮

It was released in a couple of (not "many") territories yes but this is a UK chart forum so I presumed we were discussing songs played on UK radio which didn't chart - and all those other Oasis songs mentioned I've heard on the radio but I don't ever recall hearing Don't Go Away on the radio.

Same, would have assumed it was Jay Kay!

Yeah, I remember Radio 1 loving this then wondering why it never charted!

Good thread on this stuff here.

I remember when "Paradise" by Coldplay was ineligible for the charts for a little while.

Another song that was completely ineligible for the charts was "The Way We Are" by Alesha Dixon. She made it ineligible herself as she didn't want it to chart.

Despite this Sonnet did chart, albeit a lowly #74 but it got through on imports

I think Ariana Grande - Break Free was ineligible for AGES and missed the opportunity to go top 10 before it finally did chart when the hype had subsided.

Why was it ineligible, do you remember? I don't recall that at all and Wiki doesn't have an answer either!
