Fleetwood Mac- Songbird (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 16/02/2024)

Kenny Loggins- Danger Zone (UK chart peak: 45, platinum 12/11/2021)

Joji- Slow Dancing In The Dark (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 17/11/2023)

Fleetwood Mac's original "Songbird" beats Eva Cassidy's cover but does not make it to the semi-finals, it was written for Rumours by the late Christine McVie and was included as the B-side of the "Dreams" single. "Danger Zone" from 1986's Top Gun reached number 2 in America and has outperformed "Take My Breath Away", a UK chart-topper from the same film, in the digital age. It would also go on to feature in the 2022 sequel Top Gun Maverick. Formerly an online comedian using the handles Filthy Frank and Pink Guy, George Miller started releasing music as Joji in 2017. "Slow Dancing In The Dark" is included on Joji's 2018 debut album Ballads 1.

So hard to choose, so I went for my favourite song for each artist to be able to fit more in. Also it’s great to be able to put in a Beach Boys song in tribute to the genius of Brian Wilson. +30 Let

  • Damn. Missed this by a day. I'd definitely have chucked a bucketload of points at CCR and Slipknot too. Hope a few of my favourites can still make it through

I’ve got a shortlist of 60! This is so tough haha

I haven’t been losing too many but both the 30 pointers were in my votes. “Jerusalema” is a gorgeous uplifting acrobeats number. Foals are always great.

Brad Kane and Lea Salonga- A Whole New World (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 26/04/2024)

Imagine Dragons- Warriors (UK chart peak: 54, platinum 25/10/2024)

Børns- Electric Love (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 21/07/2023)

Another Disney song! "A Whole New World" is of course from 1992's Aladdin and is performed as the characters Aladdin and Jasmine: Kane and Salonga only provide the singing voices of the characters. A cover by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle was a number 12 hit in the UK and a number 1 in the US. "Warriors" was featured on the deluxe version of the Dragons' 2015 number 1 album Smoke + Mirrors, it was used by Riot Games to promote 2014's League Of Legends World Championship. "Electric Love" was a "bubbling under" hit in America in 2015 but would get a second wind on TikTok in 2020, charting in Australia and Ireland for the first time following this.

Adele- Love In The Dark (UK chart peak: 76, platinum 25/08/2023)

Gerry Cinnamon- Canter (UK chart peak: 50, platinum 15/07/2022)

Sam Fender- Getting Started (UK chart peak: 47, platinum 17/01/2025)

Adele has 4 eligible tracks, all of them got points. "Love In The Dark" is from her 2015 album 25 and charted for the first time in 2021 when she released "Easy On Me", with a reset it would have reached the top 40. Gerry Cinnamon loses his second and final song to get points with "Canter" from his most recent album The Bonny. "Getting Started" from Seventeen Going Under leaves Sam with two more tracks left.

Johnny Cash- Ring Of Fire (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 15/04/2022)

The Notorious B.I.G.- Juicy (UK chart peak: 72, 2x platinum 22/04/2022)

Shakira- Try Everything (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 13/09/2024)

Three songs from three very influential artists- "Ring Of Fire" was recorded by Johnny Cash in 1963 but it is not quite his biggest hit, losing to his 2002 cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". "Juicy" is often considered one of the best hip hop songs ever released: Biggie makes reference to a 1993 attack on the World Trade Centre but many mistakenly believe he predicted 9/11 7 years before it happened. "Try Everything" was recorded for Disney's 2016 film Zootopia (or Zootropolis in the UK), Shakira had a voice role in the film as pop singer Gazelle who sings the song in the film.

So far for me

'No Role Modelz', 'Juicy', 'Shake That', 'That's Life', 'Forever', 'Danger Zone' and 'Rock n' Roll Star all out.

The Beatles- Twist And Shout (UK chart peak: 48, platinum 01/04/2022)

Sia- Breathe Me (UK chart peak: 71, platinum 16/05/2025)

Luke Combs- When It Rains It Pours (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 26/07/2024)

The Beatles' iconic cover of "Twist And Shout" was recorded in one take: John Lennon famously was not happy with his vocals. Included on their debut album Please Please Me, it would later be released on an EP of the same name which was not eligible for either the singles or albums chart. It is the Beatles' biggest song from 1962-1966 in the digital era, mostly thanks to its inclusion in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It charted for the first time after the Beatles' catalogue was first released on iTunes in 2010, it was the 2nd highest charting Beatles song that week behind "Hey Jude" at 40. "Breathe Me" was a 2004 release from Sia, its use in the series finale of Six Feet Under the following year helped Sia break America. Luke Combs had 2 eligible tracks but this was his only one to get points: taken from his 2017 album This One's For You, it became a sleeper hit in Australia and Ireland in the 2020s.

Billy Joel- Piano Man (UK chart peak: did not chart, 2x platinum 29/12/2023)

No songs received exactly 38 points. Billy Joel's much-loved "Piano Man" from 1973 is considered his signature song, inspired by his time as a lounge singer in L.A. while trying to escape from his New York-based label who he was in conflict with. Billy's other eligible track "Vienna" received no points.

'Doin' Time' another one to drop out for me today! I wasn't familiar with the original so her version introduced me to the song in general.

So excited to see Lana live for the first time next week <3 (as long as she doesn't cancel like last time I was supposed to see her kink)

Tracy Chapman- Baby Can I Hold You (UK chart peak: 94, platinum 18/10/2024)

Kendrick Lamar ft. Jay Rock- Money Trees (UK chart peak: did not chart, 2x platinum 07/02/2025)

Tame Impala- The Less I Know The Better (UK chart peak: did not chart, 3x platinum 13/06/2025)

"Baby Can I Hold You" is from Tracy Chapman's huge-selling self-titled debut album, it did not get higher than number 94 despite the success of the album and its previous big hit "Fast Car". A cover by Boyzone reached number 2 in 1997. "Money Trees" from Kendrick's Good Kid M.A.A.D. City is often considered one of Kendrick's best tracks and Jay Rock's verse is considered one of the best hip-hop features ever. "The Less I Know The Better" is Tame Impala's biggest hit and is the first of his two tracks to get points, he had a third track that received no points.

Chuck Berry- Johnny B. Goode (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 26/01/2024)

Bon Iver- Skinny Love (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 30/07/2021)

Arctic Monkeys- Snap Out Of It (UK chart peak: 82, 2x platinum 30/08/2024)

Alessia Cara- Scars To Your Beautiful (UK chart peak: 55, 2x platinum 25/10/2024)

Hugh Jackman/The Greatest Showman Cast- From Now On (UK chart peak: 71, 2x platinum 06/10/2023)

"Johnny B. Goode" is a landmark rock n roll record and the 2nd of the two 50s songs eligible for the rate to get points. Michael J. Fox's famous performance of the song in 1985's Back To The Future surely helped the song cement itself as an iconic piece of music: the band McFly would name themselves after Fox's character. "Skinny Love" was first released in 2007 but became famous after it was covered by Birdy in 2011, her version reached number 17 and has gone triple platinum. The Arctics lose their 2nd of 3 AM songs to get points with "Snap Out Of It", while the final The Greatest Showman song to get points drops out. Alessia Cara's "Scars To Your Beautiful" was inspired by Christina Aguilera's number 1 hit "Beautiful" and a top 10 hit in Australia and the US, it was the only one of her two eligible songs to get points, the other was her version of Moana's "How Far I'll Go".

Ouch at Bon Iver, that is another big loss for me, really thought that stood a good chance of making it through

Royal Blood- Figure It Out (UK chart peak: 43, platinum 04/12/2020)

Kendrick Lamar- King Kunta (UK chart peak: 56, platinum 08/07/2022)

Royal Blood's most successful single in both sales and chart position is "Figure It Out" from their 2014 self-titled debut album. "King Kunta" was one of two songs eligble from K-Dot's 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly:  the other was "Alright" which got no points. "King Kunta" makes reference to lyrics from Michael Jackson and James Brown, netting them writing credits.

Sam Fender- Will We Talk (UK chart peak: 43, platinum 02/09/2022)

Billie Eilish released "Ocean Eyes" on SoundCloud in 2015 when she was just 13 and released it commercially the following year, it would later feature on her 2017 EP Don't Smile At Me and be referenced on "You Should See Me In A Crown" from her 2019 debut album. "Will We Talk" from Sam's debut album Hypersonic Missiles is titled "Will We Talk In The Morning" on physical versions of the album: he now has 1 song left, can it make the semi-finals?

Disturbed- Down With The Sickness (UK chart peak: did not chart, platinum 12/01/2024)

"OH-WA-A-A-AH!" Serial ACR-dodgers Disturbed had a massive hit with their cover of "The Sound Of Silence" (the original is still to come in this rate) but their biggest original song is this track from their 2000 debut album The Sickness. The song's bridge with lyrics from the perspective of a boy threatening his abusive mother was cut from the music video and radio edit.

I did vote for 'The Less I Know The Better' but I'm pleased my favourite Tame Impala song from the rate is still to come, fingers crossed it will advance.

Aww I almost gave Kansas my 30 pointer as I was worried it wouldn't advance and sure enough I'm it's only voter, I'm hoping my actual 30 wouldn't have got enough points without mine so it made it worth it x It's a Guitar Hero classic.

I did throw points to a few of the classic Disney songs, admittedly a bit hard to rank them alongside my favourite songs here.

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED! Thank you to the 30 voters who have contributed, way more than I expected. I'll start tallying up the scores now and will start posting results once they are completed, either tonight or tomorrow.

@CianS I'm going to count your 40-11.

Oh sorry. That's no problem, not sure where I got 40 from.
