Posted Friday at 10:563 days Let's take a look back through the UK No.1s of some 00s years to see what I thought was worst all the way up to the best. Feel free to add your own memories of these songs, and if you think I've overscored them or embarrassingly undermarked them as there are sure to be some choice takes in here (one in particular I can think of). I'll go through all 43 No.1s, including the Westlife carry over from the start of the year. What's actually surprising is that, for such a high turnover, very few of these are actually crap to me. Labels really pushed their best stuff to the front with impeccable timing and it was a great year for pop and dance.FIve and Queen - We Will Rock YouScore: 2/10Reason: I actually like Five, whether they're getting up or getting down, as they do tend to in most of their songs at one point or another, but I really dislike this cover. I guess it was nice to see We Will Rock You chart but Five's raps and obnoxious chants added nothing to this for me, and I think I'd have preferred a second week for Ronan (didn't this only get to the top on a technicality due to one of his CD singles being disqualified from the chart?)
Friday at 11:003 days Author Oxide and Neutrino - Bound 4 Da ReloadScore: 3/10Reason: I just don't really get the point of it, I think the Casualty music works well in itself and for its purpose but I don't really want to listen to it as part of a garage record although the stuttery line 'can everybody stop getting shot-shot-shot' makes me laugh. They performed this at my school in late 2000 randomly, along with No Good 4 Me, which I actually did really enjoy and bought the CD single of.
Friday at 11:023 days Bound 4 Da Reload was a thing in school I remember rapping along to the verse "when I say you say we say they say make some noise!" and the kids found it funny. 😄
Friday at 11:043 days Author Not really sure if this is in the correct forum btw, it depends on your definition of which century 2000 falls I guess. Feel free to move to 21st.
Friday at 11:153 days Looking forward to following this!‘We Will Rock You’ is my least favourite #1 of 2000 as well so a good start. Five have their moments but this was a really naff cover.
Friday at 11:163 days Cool thread but yes I think I’m claiming it as one of ours haha. Please could a pre 2000 mod move it?
Friday at 11:223 days Author Fair - must admit I accidentally posted it in the wrong place and it was intended for 21st initially 😂
Friday at 11:273 days Fair for Five. Oxide And Neutrino are a bit low for me and that’s one that’s grown on me over the years. The sample is a terrible idea on the face of it but in the end they produced something quite interesting. It’s still not something I’d choose to listen to, and I think their subsequent hits were better.
Friday at 11:353 days Author The inspiration from this thread comes from @awardinary who suggested I do a No.1s rank after I mentioned my personal chart started 26 years ago to the day (topped by Jewel's low top 40 smash Down So Long), and also @Big Fat Sue whose UK Eurovision rank we hope to see continue soon!
Friday at 11:443 days We Will Rock You really served no purpose for me other than getting the original song some added attention. It was quite a popular school disco track for me at the time but this version is objectively tacky as hell.Meanwhile I've always enjoyed Bound 4 Da Reload, quite an unusual song for its time both in sound and structure. It took me a very long time to discover that infamous lyric was taken from Lock Stock!
Friday at 11:493 days Author Didn't realise that about Lock Stock, or if I did hear about it I'd subsequently forgotten. Interesting!
Friday at 11:503 days Yes 21st century really and so far i agree with the reviews and scores. I might be a bit more generous with a couple of 4s but thats about it!
Friday at 11:523 days I like 5ive a lot, but I really do not like this either (I think I also dislike 'Let's Dance' almost equally )I really like 'Bound 4 Da Reload' though!
Friday at 11:563 days Author Westlife - I Have A Dream / Seasons In The SunScore: 3/10Reason: I get why Westlife's management took the winter cover ballad route to get an easy Christmas No.1, but both of these sides are naff for me. They opened their career with three half decent original pop singles, looking back, so it was a shame to see them move very quickly into pedestrian cover territory. The ABBA song is fine but very twee and not one of my favourite ABBA singles in the first place, and Seasons In The Sun (the original of which I like) I would rate even lower individually. Brian put it best himself when he said something along the lines of singing this track in turtleneck sweaters in the video, it felt like the label was trying to turn them into Val Doonican. For a band aimed so squarely at the teen market with their first few singles, it's alarming how quickly they moved on to trying to futureproof their career by shifting to much older audiences with kitsch releases like this. A very wet start to the new millennium.
Friday at 11:583 days Ah Westlife of course. Both songs appeared in the Hits series, on Hits 2000 and New Hits 2000, so I managed to own both at the time. I don't remember Seasons In The Sun being particularly well liked at the time.
Friday at 12:063 days Same I don't mind the I Have A Dream cover (and that was the one on all the music channels at the time) but their Seasons In The Sun is dreadful.
Friday at 12:163 days I Have a Dream being the best of the covers for Westlife there, but Seasons in the Sun starts with a "few and far between" Kian lead vocal. And he's pretty easy on the eye in the video, so it's not all bad.I quite like 5ive's cover of We Will Rock You as well 🙈 but it's about as needed as East 17's version of PSB's West End Girls.
Friday at 12:193 days I really dislike both those covers - doesn’t help that I’m very fond of the original ABBA song whereas I know a lot of people see it as one of their weaker hits.
Friday at 12:323 days Dreadful, I'd rank that one lower than the other two and off the top of my head I can't think of a worse 2000 number one.Except maybe their one with Mariah Carey.
Friday at 12:453 days My least fave #1 of that year is definitely another cover version which I'll refrain from saying until it appears in this countdown.
