August 7, 2025Aug 7 Belatedly posting my ranking based on the scores in my Top 40 ratings thread. I had to slot in “I Had A Dream / Seasons In The Sun” as it will be rated in 1999 and “It Feels So Good” and “Don’t Call Me Baby” as they first reached the Top 40 in 1998 and 1999 respectively so weren’t rated there. It was an incredible year for chart toppers. For comparison my 10th favourite of 2001 is only a 6; here the Top 10 nearly all received 9.1 Pure Shores (10)2 It Feels So Good (?)3 Black Coffee (9)4 Toca’s Miracle (9)5 Groovejet (9)6 The Real Slim Shady (9)7 Oops.. I Did It Again (9)8 Stan (9)9 I Turn To You (9)10 Music (8)11 Can’t Fight The Moonlight (8)12 Rise (8)13 7 Days (8)14 Never Be The Same Again (8)15 Don’t Call Me Baby (?)16 Independent Women - Part 1 (8)17 Life Is A Rollercoaster (8)18 Lady (Hear Me Tonight) (8)19 Fill Me In (7)20 Beautiful Day (7)21 The Masses Against The Classes (7)22 Breathless (7)23 Same Old Brand New You (7)24 Spinning Around (7)25 Don’t Give Up (6)26 Born To Make You Happy (6)27 Go Let It Out (5)28 Can We Fix It? (5)29 Never Had A Dream Come True (4)30 Rock DJ (4)31 Holler / Let Love Lead The Way (4)32 Day And Night (4)33 You See The Trouble With Me (3)34 Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty) (3)35 Fool Again (3)36 American Pie (3)37 Bag It Up (3)38 Stomp (2)39 We Will Rock You (2)40 My Love (2)41 Take On Me (2)42 I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun (?)43 Against All Odds (1)
August 17, 2025Aug 17 Looking at the number 1's of the year 2000, there was a lot of cheap, disposable pop music for teenagers. And, as for Bob the Builder, who the hell bought that?! 😧My favourites have to be Fragma or Sonique. Not a vintage year I don't think. Even though, I had started getting into music around this time, I was listening to BBC Radio 1 which was playing a much better selection. It's crazy to think I was only 7 years old in the year 2000. 😱 Edited August 31, 2025Aug 31 by montyj
August 17, 2025Aug 17 Going through this thread and seeing the number of classics in one year — both good and bad — is wild. 'Pure Shores' and 'Black Coffee', both being number one hits, will always feel special 🖤Mine would look something like this:01 All Saints 'Black Coffee'02 All Saints 'Pure Shores'03 Spiller 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)'04 Sonique 'It Feels So Good'05 Modjo 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)'06 Madonna 'Music'07 Destiny's Child - Independent Women Part I08 Eminem 'Stan'09 The Corrs 'Breathless'10 Fragma 'Toca's Miracle'I always found 'Breathless' overrated, until I saw Caroline Polachek perform it live, and then it clicked — 20 years later On 6/23/2025 at 9:07 PM, dandy* said:Particularly please you also really like Don't Call Me Baby as I think that's often overlooked - and far superior to the much better remembered Modjo track. Both absolute bangers, but 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)' is just French house perfection
