Unfortunately film composers have never really done too well on the singles chart (John Williams has only 4 top 40 hits!) but a few pieces have picked up certifications. Legendary film composer Hans Zimmer's only UK top 40 hit was joke song "Spider-Pig" from The Simpsons Movie but his most-successful single is "Time", used at the end of close collaborator Christopher Nolan's Inception from 2010. It is also the biggest-selling piece from a film score in the UK from what I can tell. A remix by Alan Walker was released in 2020.

The debut single from Declan McKenna was released on Bandcamp in December 2014 when he was 15 years old- it received an official release the following December and was included on his 2017 debut album What Do You Think About The Car. The song criticises the 2014 World Cup which was held in Brazil. It went viral in 2022 in the lead up to that year's World Cup which was controversially held in Qatar, helping it get an ACR reset and chart for the first time. It has been a consistent streamer ever since.

"A plaque and platinum status is wack if I'm not the baddest"- Em clearly not bothered by the success of this song if he's not recognised as the best! Taken from his 2002 album The Eminem Show, "Till I Collapse" is the most streamed song on worldwide Spotify that was never released as a single and is recognised as one of Em's greatest tracks. Brian May gets a songwriter credit as it uses a "stomp-stomp-clap" reminiscent of "We Will Rock You" (still to come in this rate). It charted for the first time in 2009 after it was used in an trailer for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

B*gger. Just seen this - as I’ve been so busy with limited internet. Sia and Carrie would have been high up and therefore probably qualified for the next round.

But… bring on the final!

Heeeeeeey Ms. Carter! The only platinum non-top 40 from Beyoncé is this track from her 2013 self-titled album. Split into two parts, "Yoncé" and "Partition", the "Yoncé" beat was originally given to Dizzee Rascal (yes really) before Beyoncé recorded the song. The drums were originally played by Justin Timberlake on a bucket as a placeholder but Beyoncé chose to keep the placeholder due to its "organic sound". A vocal sample from the French dub of The Big Lebowski is used towards the end!

Included on Adele's 21, this track was written by Adele with Ryan Tedder while she was going through a harsh breakup. Tedder wrote the first lines of the song without knowing of Adele's personal struggles at the time. Adele felt the track perfectly described her situation and Tedder would later include the "turning tables" phrase after she arrived at the studio and used the phrase when talking about a recent argument with her ex.

"You're In Love With A Psycho" was the lead single from Kasabian's 2017 album For Crying Out Loud, their last with vocalist Tom Meighan. The music video features actors Noel Fielding and Stephen Graham and is set in the West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, a callback to their 2009 album. The track was controversial as some believed it reinforced stereotypes about mental disorders.

Often considered one of the best alt-rock songs of the early 90s, "Fade Into You" from Mazzy Star's 1993 album So Tonight That I Might See was a minor hit in English-speaking countries in 1994 (and a number 3 hit in Iceland) but really took off in the 2020s thanks to its popularity on TikTok: at least 400,000 of its sales were achieved between January 2022 and September 2024.

Kasabian and Mazzy Starr would both score well from me too. The former is my favourite of theirs and the latter was everywhere in late '93 so takes me right back.

Featuring additional vocals from the London Community Gospel Choir and contributions from The Japanese House, this track from the 1975's 2018 album was inspired by Matty Healy's former heroin addiction. Healy refused to write about his addiction until he was completely sober after 5 years of addiction.

"Life Is A Highway" was first released by Tom Cochrane in 1991, becoming a top 10 hit in the US and Australia and a number 1 in Canada, but only reaching number 62 in the UK. Country rockers Rascal Flatts covered the song as the theme of Pixar's much-loved 2006 film Cars. This version also hit the top 10 in America.
