Taken from the virtual group's 2010 album Plastic Beach, "On Melancholy Hill" was written by Damon Albarn while producing The Good, The Bad & The Queen's first album. The music video features every collaborator on the album, amongst them Lou Reed and Snoop Dogg. It was the only song from the album to reach the UK top 100, though "Rhinestone Eyes" has also been certified silver.

  • The first track I heard by Kendrick, excellent song and a sign of great things to come.

  • “Lost” is beautiful: it would definitely have gone Top 40 but for them clinging to the no resets for a track more than 3 years old rule.

Sadly the first of my really high scorers to go. The Pixies are one of my all time favourite bands, Where Is My Mind? wouldn’t be amongst my absolute favourites of theirs but that’s no slight as the s

Woodkid directed music videos for the likes of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift before releasing his own music, this track was included on the first of his two studio albums The Golden Age. Later adopted as an LGBTQ anthem, "Run Boy Run" is his biggest hit and has been used in lots of adverts over the past decade. Woodkid directed the song's music video himself.

A couple of big losses there - 'On Melancholy Hill' was in my top 5 wub I'm glad the Plastic Beach era is getting its flowers nowadays after producing no top 40 hits at the time. 'On Melancholy Hill', 'Rhinestone Eyes' and 'Empire Ants' are all within their top 10 popular songs on Spotify at the moment.

'Run Boy Run' was another BuzzJack Song Contest winner before my time. I can't remember when I first heard it but I was immediately a fan, very atmospheric, so it's no wonder that it soundtracks media quite a lot.

He had 2 UK number ones but the biggest global hit for Duke Dumont was this song from 2015, which features uncredited vocal from Boy Matthews and peaked in the top 5 in Australia. In the UK it is his second biggest seller behind "I Got U" with Jax Jones who is also a co-writer on this track.

With a riff that sounds suspiciously similar to "The One I Love" by R.E.M., "Morning Glory" is the title track of Oasis' second album, the biggest-selling album of the 90s in the UK. It was released as a single in Australia, New Zealand and Japan only, while getting a radio push in the US and Canada. The song's lyrics make reference to "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles. The song segues into "Champagne Supernova" on the album.

Thoughts on today's songs:

Wish You Were Here- the intro drags on quite a bit but otherwise I enjoy this one from Floyd. Always found the radio tuning transition really cool. They have a better track on the way in this final though. If "Money" had gone platinum before round 1 started that would've been my pick of their platinum non-top 40 songs

On Melancholy Hill- love the atmosphere on this, one of my favourite Gorillaz songs. Always felt Plastic Beach was unfairly overlooked so I'm glad this had enough fans to make the final!

Run Boy Run- can't remember where I first heard this (probably on an advert) but that epic instrumental has always stuck with me. I prefer listening to the version without vocals but even with them it's a good song.

Ocean Drive- why can't Jax Jones make more songs like this nowadays? Love this style of dance, and this song sounds particularly great on a late night drive.

Morning Glory- my favourite Oasis song! Much prefer their songs where the lyrics aren't the main focus, the instrumental rocks hard and Liam sounds fairly listenable! The R.E.M. riff definitely helps matters too and I actually think it's put to better use on this song 😆 Can't believe they didn't get writers credits (same with Marc Bolan on "Cigarettes And Alcohol")

I discovered Run Boy Run when it went viral on TikTok couple years ago for its "If I was..." trend!

Now the real losses start! 'Ocean Drive' is brilliant, Duke's best song by miles. And then there's 'Morning Glory', which I rated above everything else, a timeless classic from the best album ever written, which I was lucky enough to hear live at Wembley last week wub

I actually lost my bottom 6 before the top 40, but my +7 will probably be here for a while. Of today's losses 'Wish You Were Here' should be much higher, 'Ocean Drive' won the "casualties of streaming" rate hosted by Dan in 2019 (where it finished a long way ahead of some songs still in this rate) so is perhaps something of a surprise early exit, and I'd never noticed the 'Morning Glory' / 'The One I Love' similarity before but it sounds obvious now!

Back to back Oasis! Track 9 on Morning Glory was originally going to be included on Definitely Maybe but was replaced by "Digsy's Diner" which the band thought was a better live song. It was never released as a single. It would've made the top 40 when Oasis announced their reunion in 2024 but the 3-track rule prevented this. Just one more track from the band left now...

34. Van Morrison- Brown Eyed Girl (763 points)

Writer: Van Morrison

Producer: Bert Berns

UK chart peak: 60 (6 weeks in the top 100)

Achieved platinum status on 11/05/2018, 2x platinum 30/04/2021, 3x platinum 07/07/2023, 4x platinum 31/01/2025

Based on certification dates, this is tied with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as the most successful single from the 60s in the digital era though it is likely that this track is ahead. Originally called "Brown Skinned Girl", the title was changed when Morrison subconsciously sung "brown eyed" instead. It was his first solo single after a successful period with Them and reached number 10 in the US. It failed to chart in the UK initially and only charted for the first time in 2013 after iTunes discounting. The song almost made the 2024 year end list thanks to really strong streaming. Morrison claims he has never received royalties for the song and refuses to perform it live, calling it one of his worst songs.

Hopefully Champagne Supernova is a fair bit higher up for Oasis x

Run Boy Run is another loss, although I'm pleasantly surprised it's made it this far and has managed to make a dent in the public consciousness outside of BJSC, it always sounded like a huge and distinctive song.

Taken from the Beatles' 1968 album, Paul wrote "Blackbird" after hearing a blackbird's chirps while the band were in India. The lyrics were inspired directly by the civil rights movement in America. Only Paul performs on the track and he was its sole writer despite the Lennon-McCartney credit.

Apparently one of Beyoncé’s favourite songs (she covered it on her Cowboy Carter album) due to it’s connection to the American civil rights movement. A very simple but powerful song!

32. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell- Ain't No Mountain High Enough (771 points)

This Motown classic is the most successful song released by the label in the digital era. Dusty Springfield wanted to record the single originally but Ashford and Simpson declined her offer in the hopes of building a connection with Motown. Marvin and Tammi's version was the first version of the song to be released and reached number 19 in the US. It failed to chart in the UK until 2013 thanks to iTunes discounting, and became a strong streamer following its use in 2014's Guardians Of The Galaxy. Fellow Motown artist Diana Ross' version reached number 6 in 1970.
