Taken from the virtual group's 2010 album Plastic Beach, "On Melancholy Hill" was written by Damon Albarn while producing The Good, The Bad & The Queen's first album. The music video features every collaborator on the album, amongst them Lou Reed and Snoop Dogg. It was the only song from the album to reach the UK top 100, though "Rhinestone Eyes" has also been certified silver.

  • The first track I heard by Kendrick, excellent song and a sign of great things to come.

  • “Lost” is beautiful: it would definitely have gone Top 40 but for them clinging to the no resets for a track more than 3 years old rule.

Thanks Cian- just letting you know your vote won't count if "Champagne Supernova"/"The Chain" enter the top 40 as you haven't inserted the substitutes in your vote. I'll send a reminder for you to ins

38. Woodkid- Run Boy Run (725 points)

Producers: The Shoes, Woodkid

UK chart peak: 44 (6 weeks in the top 100)

Woodkid directed music videos for the likes of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift before releasing his own music, this track was included on the first of his two studio albums The Golden Age. Later adopted as an LGBTQ anthem, "Run Boy Run" is his biggest hit and has been used in lots of adverts over the past decade. Woodkid directed the song's music video himself.

A couple of big losses there - 'On Melancholy Hill' was in my top 5 wub I'm glad the Plastic Beach era is getting its flowers nowadays after producing no top 40 hits at the time. 'On Melancholy Hill', 'Rhinestone Eyes' and 'Empire Ants' are all within their top 10 popular songs on Spotify at the moment.

'Run Boy Run' was another BuzzJack Song Contest winner before my time. I can't remember when I first heard it but I was immediately a fan, very atmospheric, so it's no wonder that it soundtracks media quite a lot.

He had 2 UK number ones but the biggest global hit for Duke Dumont was this song from 2015, which features uncredited vocal from Boy Matthews and peaked in the top 5 in Australia. In the UK it is his second biggest seller behind "I Got U" with Jax Jones who is also a co-writer on this track.

With a riff that sounds suspiciously similar to "The One I Love" by R.E.M., "Morning Glory" is the title track of Oasis' second album, the biggest-selling album of the 90s in the UK. It was released as a single in Australia, New Zealand and Japan only, while getting a radio push in the US and Canada. The song's lyrics make reference to "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles. The song segues into "Champagne Supernova" on the album.

Thoughts on today's songs:

Wish You Were Here- the intro drags on quite a bit but otherwise I enjoy this one from Floyd. Always found the radio tuning transition really cool. They have a better track on the way in this final though. If "Money" had gone platinum before round 1 started that would've been my pick of their platinum non-top 40 songs

On Melancholy Hill- love the atmosphere on this, one of my favourite Gorillaz songs. Always felt Plastic Beach was unfairly overlooked so I'm glad this had enough fans to make the final!

Run Boy Run- can't remember where I first heard this (probably on an advert) but that epic instrumental has always stuck with me. I prefer listening to the version without vocals but even with them it's a good song.

Ocean Drive- why can't Jax Jones make more songs like this nowadays? Love this style of dance, and this song sounds particularly great on a late night drive.

Morning Glory- my favourite Oasis song! Much prefer their songs where the lyrics aren't the main focus, the instrumental rocks hard and Liam sounds fairly listenable! The R.E.M. riff definitely helps matters too and I actually think it's put to better use on this song 😆 Can't believe they didn't get writers credits (same with Marc Bolan on "Cigarettes And Alcohol")

I discovered Run Boy Run when it went viral on TikTok couple years ago for its "If I was..." trend!
