It's completely AI generated. And not just like I Ran had an AI vocal initially on top of a proper backing track, but a fully AI creation. As far as I know the first to chart in the UK.

It's an interesting arrangement of the track, so it's a shame it wasn't properly produced by somebody. I listened to it once out of curiosity and that will be it.

They should ban all AI songs from the charts completely. No imagination whatsoever.

I'm very sympathetic to I Run. Yes the vocal was AI but there is a long history of independent and unsigned artists using technology in new and inventive ways. Some people in this genre won't have access to good singers. Calvin Harris used his own vocals in the beginning and then used people with better voices as he became more successful. In years past an instrumental would be put out and then a vocal version would come along later like Offshore and Offshore 97. But if the song is conceptualised with a vocal and you don't have a vocal I have no problem with someone putting AI on that to start with. In this case it got attention and then a real vocalist was brought on. It shouldn't chart though.

It's a difficult one re AI. I've had a go using Suno and yes you can literally load in a song, click a couple of buttons and it'll spit out an entirely new version for you in 30 seconds. Or you can tell it to write a song about X in the style of Y and it'll come up with something remarkable.

But I also know people who see it as a tool to produce high quality versions of songs they have completely written the lyrics and music for themselves, have put in a guide vocal for it to use, and spend a lot of time on prompts to get it to sound exactly how they want. So I'm not sure about banning AI songs because where do you draw the line.

The problem is that AI generated music is inherently infringing because it is able to do what it does by being trained on existing music by real artists who are, in general, not out here consenting for random people to make new music based on / imitating their work. The original 'I Run' got taken down / briefly banned from the chart not because it was an AI song but because it was clearly based specifically on Jorja Smith's voice (and HAVEN. leaned into this promoting the song as if it was a remix of an unreleased song by her), hence why the new version with a proper vocalist has had no issues. (Well, not no issues, I think Jorja's label is still pursuing legal action for the song's lyrics and melodies being based on Jorja's work but that is a bit more open to interpretation as opposed to the vocal being a very obvious knockoff).

I say 'in general' because Grimes made her own AI software free for everyone to use based on her voice lol. So I guess those are fine. x (And it appears Stromae's label are all fine and dandy with this 'Papaoutai' cover considering the original songwriters have a credit on it).

I don't think AI covers are a problem at all, as Brer said the original songwriters will still get the credit and royalties if the song becomes a hit.

I'm not sure about that. AI-generated music isn’t inherently infringing just because it’s trained on existing music. Learning patterns from prior work is how all musicians develop, and copyright has never required consent to be influenced by or learn from other artists. Copyright protects specific melodies, lyrics, recordings rather than styles or what Ed Sheeran might refer to as the basic building blocks of music.

I can understand the problem with I Run though. I don't think we know for sure that they deliberately intended it to sound like Jorja or if it was just accident, but I got why it pissed her and others off.

Yeah, I guess again it also depends on how much work the person put into it - did they spend hours playing around to get what they wanted, or did they just click a few buttons and take all the credit.
