‘Algorithm’ finds Natalie Imbruglia in a new era: one of empowerment, freedom and creative fulfillment. The Australian-British pop icon’s first album in five years is a tour de force, a deeply personal record to remind us precisely why we fell in love with her in the first place. It comes as the cultural zeitgeist shifts and pop edges back towards the dancefloor, its direction feeling in tune with the sophisticated pop, disco and house leanings of Robyn.

The single ‘Upside Down’ opens with a flourish of bright synths and energetic percussion, with Natalie’s distinctive lilt floating above. As she reaches the chorus, it grows brighter – kaleidoscopic, shimmering – and we hear her relinquishing control, and ultimately finding clarity in a song which came from a feeling of shame surrounding her mental health.

Following the Top 10 comeback achieved with 2021’s ‘Firebird’, ‘Algorithm’ is a record in which Natalie is reinvigorated and raring to go - apt reward for pushing herself creatively with confessional themes of vulnerability and funding the project entirely independently. She also co-produced and co-wrote every song on the record, with production/songwriting collaborators including MyRiot (London Grammar), David Sneddon (Lana Del Rey, Hurts), Fraser T Smith (Adele, Dave, Stormzy, Sam Smith), Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai (Lewis Capaldi, Declan J Donovan), Tobie Tripp (George Ezra), Mark Crew (Bastille, James Arthur) and Mark Priddy (Rag'n'Bone Man, Bastille).

David Sneddon!!!!

Well the single is disappointingly underwhelming on first listen some interesting names in the songwriters list though!

Yeah the single is unfortunately instantly forgettable 😢

This is one of the Sneddon ones and he normally knows how to write a good song so I'm surprised

Aw I like 'Upside Down', it's cute and cheery. A step up from the last lead single 'Build It Better' for sure.

I like Upside Down but i dont love it but am convinced there will be much stronger on the album.

It’s bright and breezy enough - where it fits within today’s music I’m not sure. I’ve listened a few times now and it’s definitely growing. My usual pattern with Natalie’s music is I always love the deeper cuts within the album tracks over the single releases. Looking forward to the album.

Oh this is gorgeous. It puts me in mind of Ladyhawke a little bit but that's a very good thing! Can't wait to hear what the rest of the album sounds like.

The chorus is catchy enough on the first listen, I think it will grow on me.

I really hope she does plenty of promo work when the album is released, id like her to get another top 10 album but not fully sure it will happen.
