May 6May 6 Author Voter 27: BrorYear: 1977Song: Ashra – BlackoutsBror wasn't overly pleased with the 70s but he's definitely made it work and has been riding high from the decade with this gorgeously building guitar piece. He sent the a key artist in the Krautrock movement, Ashra, a musical ensemble founded by German Manuel Göttsching in 1976, the name was changed as Göttsching's music became less psychedelic and more oriented towards electronica. New Age of Earth is considered a foundational record for the ambient genre. 12 Codeine - Cave-In10 The Starseeds - Parallel Life8 Hooverphonic - Eden7 T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS6 XTC - Dear God5 The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - The "Onedin Line" Theme4 Supertramp - School3 The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You2 Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall1 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave To The ComputerMy 12 was a super easy pick here - I have my suspicion as to who might be behind that one but we'll see x - but then quite tough to decide on the other two podium positions, ultimately felt in a trip-hoppy mood it seems but T-SQUARE deserves a spot up there too x Lots more good stuff here so a healthy list of commiserations for Buzzcocks, Marsha Hunt's 22, The Andrews Sisters, Tülay German, Wanda Jackson, Innocence and Joe Meek.I found my song with a RateYourMusic trawl for 'krautrock', the release date for the parent album is listed there as 1977 but other sources seem to disagree on whether it's 77 or 78 so I might have been a little cheeky inadvertently. It was certainly recorded in 1977 at least. Hope you all enjoyed, I was pleasantly surprised to find something I liked so much after an initial sense of dread at being given a year in the 70s xHave ended up voting for 2 songs each from the 60s, 70s and 80s and 4 from the 90s which feels like a healthy enough split! May 6May 6 Thanks to Suedehead and Severin for both giving 8 points to my song.It doesn't look like the squirrel picture on the opening post was a clue to Dear God being the winning song but it's still doing quite well.
May 6May 6 I'm afraid I did end up voting for mainly songs I already knew but the bottom three songs were all great discoveries that I wasn't already aware of. And the Codeine track was not one of there's I remembered.Bob Dylan was an absolute cert for top once I saw that particular track. I've loved it since discovering it back in the 80s through Bryan Ferry's cover and working back. Weirdly not one of my favourite Buzzcocks singles either but it Buzzcocks so was always going to do well with me.
May 6May 6 That drought was painful but Bré saves the day with a silver medal, thank youuu ❤️I was intrigued for your entry when I saw krautrock mentioned at the listening session, as I couldn't help but think of early Kraftwerk. Good stuff!
May 6May 6 Author Voter 28: sevenYear: 1984Song: T SQUARE – TRAVELERSSeven didn't quite get his decade namesake, but the Orwellian year has proved very successful, certainly more so than the other Japanese acts here. T-SQUARE are a jazz fusion band, most notable for Truth which was used as the theme for Fuji Television's Formula One coverage from 1987 to 1998. They have won 12 Japan Gold Disc awards and remain musically active to this day with 51 (!) studio albums under their belt. Their music had an effect and was inspired by video game music and they have been credited as inspiring these throughout the 80s and 90s, Travelers was no exception, inspiring Guile's Theme from the 1991 game, Street Fighter II. +12 XTC - Dear God (1987) +10 Tomoko Aran - Midnight Pretenders (1983)+8 Codeine - Cave-In (1991)+7 Joe Meek - I Hear A New World (1960)+6 Buzzcocks - What Do I Get (1978)+5 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave to the Computer (1994)+4 Miki Matsubara - Rainy Day Woman (1980)+3 Supertramp - School (1974)+2 The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (1981)+1 The Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (1941)96; dandy* - The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (1981)80; jimwatts - Mark’Oh – Tears Don’t Lie (1995)75; Severin - XTC – Dear God (1987)74; seven - T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS (1984)68; DaTilt - Innocence – Natural Thing (1990)68; Nine & ¾ - Hooverphonic - Eden (1998)67; The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989)66; gooddelta - Four Jacks and a Jill - Master Jack (1968)65; Popchartfreak - The Lightning Seeds – Life’s Too Short (1999)65; Mangø - The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You (1965)65; Moby – Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) (1993)65; Jaz13Music - Buzzcocks – What Do I Get (1978)63; Bror - Ashra – Blackouts (1977)61; Dobbo - Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1962)53; Herbs - Sarah McLachlan – Vox (1988)48; matto - Caravan - All The Way (1976)47; danG - Supertramp – School (1974)47; Codeine – Cave-In (1991)46; Jade - The Starseeds - Parallel Life (1997)40; WoW73 - Marsha Hunt's 22 - (Oh, No! May 6May 6 Thank you Addy 💚 wow I believe this is the first time I've had five top scores in any contest! [Aside from one BJSC semi final where MRD had five 12s, but only two of those (+ two from the other semi) converted to 18s in the final.]Thanks Suede for some points too.
May 6May 6 I actually thought Addy would be behind Tears Don't Lie, but as he wasn't then the 12 isn't a surprise! I do personally prefer it to the Human League selection so backing that!Oh my, a 12 swap with Roba a very much needed boost after a big drought, thank you!
