Song: Shakira - Dónde Estás Corazón

¿Dónde estás, corazón? is by a little known Colombian singer-songwriter by the name of Shakira x written when she was just a teenager and over ten years before the hips weren't lying, it was included in her third studio album Pies Descalzos and was about re-claiming creative control over her music after not being taken seriously as a songwriter by her label in her two first albums.

Eden really grew on me with multiple listens, great choice

For 1992, I didn't what to pick anything that everyone would have immediately guessed was my entry so I picked something a bit different and would at least sound like it was from the early 90s. This hasn't gone too well for me so far but I see while I'm typing this that the song gets 12 points from Nine & 3/4 so thanks for that top score.

I would have been more at home with the 70s or 80s.

Eden is one of the most beautiful songs for me, so I had to send it. I had some other options like Massive Attack, but that felt like it might get vetoed, so I didn’t even consider it.

Song: Wanda Jackson – Funnel of Love

Not an easy draw, Jester sends Funnel of Love from the Queen of Rockabilly, former flame of Elvis Presley and one of the first women from the time period to have a significant career in the genre, released as the B-side to Jackson's major country-pop single, Right or Wrong. The song's unique combination of country, rock, and blues have bought it a cult following even if it wasn't a hit, with it being covered and re-recorded many times and cited as an inspiration by Adele. She toured for many decades and has only retired in 2021, still going strong at age 88.

Hooverphonic has some fantastic songs and the parent album of 'Eden', Blue Wonder Power Milk is quite the fun trip, with other beautiful songs like 'Battersea', 'Tuna', 'Renaissance Affair', 'Electro Shock Faders' and 'Magenta'. They had such a lush gorgeous sound back in the day ❤️ I've enjoyed their later work too but not as much.

Song: The Human League – The Things That Dreams Are Made Of

So here it is, the current victor, what is it about my contests that you just find so easy x despite apparently finding it hard to find things, dandy has excelled with the opening track from the 80s synthpop classic, Dare, but was only released as a single in South Africa. . The song became popular with DJs and in clubs and got some radio play on Radio 1 and it also experienced a revival in 2008 when it was released as a limited EP and though the band didn't directly engage with the promo, it was a moderate success on the Dance chart.

Hi Chez! Firstly, I don't send you many PMs clearly because I've only just noticed your delightful image of birds you have as your banner <3

Secondly, guess we'd better get to my votes...

12 Marsha Hunt's 22 - (Oh, No! Not!) The Beast Day (1973)

03 Caravan - All The Way (1976)

02 Hooverphonic - Eden (1998)

01 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave to the Computer (1994)

Very surprised to see my top 5 from the 60s and 70s and to find myself completely blanking the 80s but I feel like the people behind those selections really did well with potentially more difficult years, Lightning Seeds was a bit unexpected for a 1999 landscape too but I enjoyed it whilst Moby was a blast from the past as I haven't heard it in ages. Bit of a big gap to the rest of the songs to be honest but generally I found it an interesting journey through some unexpected style choices for buzzjack!

Thanks for hosting - it's been fun!

Some of Shakira's early Spanish material is so good, I highly recommend her Grandes Exitos album, which gathers together a lot of the best stuff from before she broke through in English speaking markets, like this track, Antología, Estoy Aquí, Ciega, Sordomuda, Inevitable, Un Poco de Amor and Ojos Así. Nice choice.

Song: Tomoko Aran – Midnight Pretenders

The first of two unfortunately languishing city pop songs. Tomoko Aran was a notable face on the scene in the 80s and 90s who returned to public attention in the 2010s amidst the rise of city pop popularity. So much so that this song received a vinyl single release in 2021, it was notably sampled by the Weeknd in Out of Time.

Song: Sarah McLachlan – Vox

Herbs gets the pop filled late 80s era and picks the renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, perhaps best known over here for Angel and featuring on Delirium's 2000 dance track, Silence. Her wonderful melodic song, Vox was her debut single and was one of four songs on the album in which McLachlan and Nettwerk were sued by Darryl Neudorf, a Vancouver musician who alleged that he had made an uncredited songwriting contribution, though it was argued that it was more production he was involved with than songwriting and the judge ruled in their favour

Hey,

Found this contest a lot harder than I expected. Not only to pick a song (although it helped that one of my fave all time artists released her debut album in the year I was given!), but to pick only 10 songs to give votes to. Also quite surprised that the 60's got more votes from me than any other decade!

Herbs has had some much needed song contest success here, his votes solidify Human League after an earlier challenge.

This being my very first Buzzjack contest I was unsure where best to pitch my choice. In the end I went with the Buzzcocks, the original ‘indie’ band in the true sense of the word, and a good representation of 1978. I think, now seeing the results, that it was too well known, next time I’ll hopefully be able to go for something more obscure.

Sarah is always great, just shows how long it took her to break through commercially, her first US hits were nearly a decade later.

I had a feeling that would be Herbs as the only other option was probably me but I have recently used her elsewhere!

Yeah I was a bit obvious with that choice, but I couldn’t resist!

Voter 25: Suedehead2

Year: 1971

Song: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Onedin Line Theme (Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia) Theme

Suedehead goes classical with what is the highest charting UK hit, reaching #15. It is most recognisable as the theme from long running 1970s TV series, The Onedin Line and if you're a certain age, the animated film Ice Age: The Meltdown. However, it was originally written as part of a ballet, Spartacus, by the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian in 1954. It comes at the dramatic moment in the ballet when the eponymous hero, the leader of a (doomed) slave uprising against the Romans, is reunited with his wife, Phrygia. The theme of the ballet has been interpreted by some as a covert reference to the Russians rebelling against their own oppressive Soviet leaders.

Here are my votes...

Poor Suede is currently the least popular of the 70s songs, he does make things a little interesting though, as he surprisingly doesn't point the Human League but does point it's competitor.

I remember reading that 'Out of Time' had a city pop sample in it so was cool to actually hear those heavily lifted production origins now.

TIL Elvis was romantically linked to a Jackson in addition to his daughter *_*

So it was Dandy behind my 12 wub you really can't go wrong with anything from that album. Or predecessor Travelogue for that matter.

Ah. There it is.

I wasn't at first going to send a track from Japan but I didn't have any confidence to go for anything prior. I've been entertaining the thought of sending city pop one day and... turns out 'Midnight Pretenders' was from 1983 so there you go. Like most people, I knew the song from being used on The Weeknd 'Out Of Time'.

Gotta love lottery! Being last for the second time is looking possible!

Voter 26: Severin

Year: 1987

Song: XTC – Dear God

Severin was thankfully able to vote by going for the influential punk and new wave band, XTC. Dear God tells the tale of an agnostic grappling with the existence of God and the problem of evil. Partridge was inspired by a series of books with the same title, which Partridge viewed as exploitative of children. It's controversial lyrics caused a minor moral panic in the US, one radio station received a bomb threat, and in another incident, a student forced their school to play the song over its public-address system while holding a faculty member hostage. Partridge also received a plethora of hate mail, though band member Andy Partridge itself if anything didn't feel it went far enough in his views and has expressed dissatisfaction.
