Voter 27: Bror

Year: 1977

Song: Ashra – Blackouts

Bror wasn't overly pleased with the 70s but he's definitely made it work and has been riding high from the decade with this gorgeously building guitar piece. He sent the a key artist in the Krautrock movement, Ashra, a musical ensemble founded by German Manuel Göttsching in 1976, the name was changed as Göttsching's music became less psychedelic and more oriented towards electronica. New Age of Earth is considered a foundational record for the ambient genre.

12 Codeine - Cave-In

10 The Starseeds - Parallel Life

8 Hooverphonic - Eden

7 T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS

6 XTC - Dear God

5 The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - The "Onedin Line" Theme

4 Supertramp - School

3 The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You

2 Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

1 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave To The Computer

My 12 was a super easy pick here - I have my suspicion as to who might be behind that one but we'll see x - but then quite tough to decide on the other two podium positions, ultimately felt in a trip-hoppy mood it seems but T-SQUARE deserves a spot up there too x Lots more good stuff here so a healthy list of commiserations for Buzzcocks, Marsha Hunt's 22, The Andrews Sisters, Tülay German, Wanda Jackson, Innocence and Joe Meek.

I found my song with a RateYourMusic trawl for 'krautrock', the release date for the parent album is listed there as 1977 but other sources seem to disagree on whether it's 77 or 78 so I might have been a little cheeky inadvertently. It was certainly recorded in 1977 at least. Hope you all enjoyed, I was pleasantly surprised to find something I liked so much after an initial sense of dread at being given a year in the 70s x

Have ended up voting for 2 songs each from the 60s, 70s and 80s and 4 from the 90s which feels like a healthy enough split! (although the whole top 3 are from the 90s oop)

08; AllStarBySmashMouth - Tomoko Aran – Midnight Pretenders (1983)

05; Miki Matsubara - Rainy Day Woman (1980)

Though Bre doesn'r point a lot of the frontrunner, with just a few votes left, it's looking like a healthy lead, T-SQUARE has been silently climbing and now breaks the top 3.

Thanks to Suedehead and Severin for both giving 8 points to my song.

It doesn't look like the squirrel picture on the opening post was a clue to Dear God being the winning song but it's still doing quite well.

I'm afraid I did end up voting for mainly songs I already knew but the bottom three songs were all great discoveries that I wasn't already aware of. And the Codeine track was not one of there's I remembered.

Bob Dylan was an absolute cert for top once I saw that particular track. I've loved it since discovering it back in the 80s through Bryan Ferry's cover and working back. Weirdly not one of my favourite Buzzcocks singles either but it Buzzcocks so was always going to do well with me.

That drought was painful but Bré saves the day with a silver medal, thank youuu ❤️

I was intrigued for your entry when I saw krautrock mentioned at the listening session, as I couldn't help but think of early Kraftwerk. Good stuff!

Voter 28: seven

Year: 1984

Song: T SQUARE – TRAVELERS

Seven didn't quite get his decade namesake, but the Orwellian year has proved very successful, certainly more so than the other Japanese acts here. T-SQUARE are a jazz fusion band, most notable for Truth which was used as the theme for Fuji Television's Formula One coverage from 1987 to 1998. They have won 12 Japan Gold Disc awards and remain musically active to this day with 51 (!) studio albums under their belt. Their music had an effect and was inspired by video game music and they have been credited as inspiring these throughout the 80s and 90s, Travelers was no exception, inspiring Guile's Theme from the 1991 game, Street Fighter II.

Screaming Trees are rightfully highly respected.

Didn't notice that connection. Would've been hilarious but XTC were never going to win

Wow. Didn't expect a 12 just after I made that comment! Thanks Seven

Voter 29: Addy!

Year: 1979

Song: Goombay Dance Band – Sun of Jamaica

Addy most certainly would've preferred a certain other decade here but at least it gave the rest of us a chance kink He has gone with a deeper cut from German Boney M-esque group Goombay Dance Band, best known for their little remembered UK number 1 Seven Tears, from the debut album of the same name, with lyrics recounting the narrator's desire to visit Jamaica after seeing Mutiny on the Bounty as a boy, mentioning Marlon Brando in the lyrics. The song reached number 1 in five countries around Europe.

From the birth year of Taylor Swift, Roba chose I'll Set You Free, which was an early leader and still looking like a solid hit, from the Bangles' third album Everything, which also features their UK number 1 single, Eternal Flame released as a "goodbye" single to its fans and came before their initial disbandment due to internal tensions following being hurtled into success. It was additionally released as a single in Australia in 1990 to promote their Greatest Hits.

Nothing for the top 2 but Travelers gets ever closer to make the top 3 a bit close at this late stage x

Thank you Addy 💚 wow I believe this is the first time I've had five top scores in any contest! [Aside from one BJSC semi final where MRD had five 12s, but only two of those (+ two from the other semi) converted to 18s in the final.]

Thanks Suede for some points too.

I actually thought Addy would be behind Tears Don't Lie, but as he wasn't then the 12 isn't a surprise! I do personally prefer it to the Human League selection so backing that!

Oh my, a 12 swap with Roba cheeseblock a very much needed boost after a big drought, thank you!

Song: Miki Matsubara - Rainy Day Woman

Another of the sadly flailing city pop entries, Miki Matsubara was mainly known in her lifetime as contributing to the opening and ending theme songs of the anime Gu-Gu Ganmo under the name Suzie Matsubara. Her 1979 debut song "Mayonaka no Door" became a hit, reaching No. 28 on the Oricon chart, but experienced a minor revival

thanks to the Tik Tok city pop trend. Though she didn't see this sadly, as she contracted cancer at a young age and retired from public life, dying in 2000.
