Biography

Tame Impala transformed psychedelic rock—and 21st century pop—in such an impactful way that even Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Kanye couldn’t resist the band's influence. The brainchild of Australian musician Kevin Parker, Tame Impala serve as both a blistering and blissed-out exercise in expansion—of sound, space, and the mind. “I’m the most creative when I’m uncomfortable,” Parker told Apple Music. “The idea of doing what I’m already good at is boring because it’s always gotta be a little bit frightening.” That fear has been a powerful motivator for Parker, who started Tame Impala in 2007 from his Perth home. His appetite for guitar experimentation—powered by an arsenal of reverb, phaser, delay, and fuzz pedals—made his 2010 debut album, InnerSpeaker, one of the year’s standout indie releases. On 2012’s Lonerism, he loaded up on synths, found inspiration in Todd Rundgren, and locked into woozy pop grooves made of both dreams (“Be Above It”) and nightmares (“Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”). He also got far more personal. As Parker has looked further inward, his music—and musical circle—has continued to expand outward. By the mid-2010s, he was collaborating with Mark Ronson, producing Gaga, and inspiring Rihanna (who covered “New Person, Same Old Mistakes”). But Tame Impala has remained his “sacred space,” an outlet that has allowed him to embrace funk (2015’s Currents), dance music (2020’s The Slow Rush), and all the infinite possibilities yet to be discovered. - Apple Music

  • They will be announcing the number 1 at least (I would assume doing a Top 10 countdown) as the show description for 5pm mentions it.

And yes, this year started off good chart wise but it's become stagnant and slow now.

Biography

When it comes to growing up in public, the man known worldwide as the King of Pop wrote the book. Born in Gary, IN, in 1958, Michael Jackson became the biggest-selling, most broadly beloved singer on the planet, but when he started his career, he was just the kid trying to catch up with his big brothers. In 1964 he started playing percussion in The Jackson Brothers, but by the time they became the Jackson 5 the following year, little Michael was already contributing lead vocals. The group became a Motown hit machine in 1970 with pop-soul smashes like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” Michael’s undeniable vocal charisma made a solo career inevitable, and his began in 1971. He scored a few major hits early on, but he really exploded with 1979’s Off the Wall, a funk-pop-disco marvel that marked Jackson’s full musical maturation. Its 1982 follow-up, Thriller, became a full-blown international phenomenon with mega-singles including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the title track, literally becoming the best-selling album ever. Following it wasn’t easy, but Jackson managed to keep his vision alive through four more albums and several more hits over the next two decades, until his passing in 2009. - Apple Music

Biography

A year or so after 2010’s Thank Me Later hit, Drake was browsing art in LA when a neon sign caught his eye: “LESS DRAKE, MORE TUPAC”. At first, he felt like ripping it off the wall. Instead, he bought it. After all, he figured if someone puts your name next to Tupac, you must be doing something right. Born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto in 1986, he—like Tupac—became the voice of a generation and prism for his pop-cultural moment, starting with 2011’s sumptuous Take Care, a career-defining magnum opus that’s included in Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. Was he an R&B singer who rapped or a rapper who sang? Was he really that sad, or just exploiting a cultural preference for male vulnerability? From the jump, he let his contradictions define him: tender but cruel, sober one minute and drunk-dialling the next, a guy who could convince you he was an underdog from his perch on top of the world. Yet as lurid as his inner world is, the proof lies in his reach outward. A Drake project can incorporate house and club music (2017’s More Life, 2022’s Honestly, Nevermind) and red-eyed trap (2022’s 21 Savage collab Her Loss) with equal conviction and at no loss to the subjectivity at the centre. “I obviously spend a lot of time in my own world,” he told Apple Music in 2016. “But when I do take a look at the broader scope of things, I’ve always tried to make music that transcends gender, nationality—to try and unify people. Because that’s really what it’s about.” Even after cementing his prowess many times over, Drake still retains the capacity to surprise. His 2023 poetry collection Titles Ruin Everything with repeat collaborator Kenza Samir proved intentionally fragmented, while his very public 2024 beef with Kendrick Lamar became a focal point not just in hip-hop fandom, but also global mainstream culture. At this point, he’s such an indelible part of the firmament that his slightest move can trigger aftershocks far beyond his immediate reach. - Apple Music

Biography

Sam Fender crafts the kind of tenacious anthemic rock that punches straight at the gut. Born and raised in 1994 in the northeastern English town of North Shields, the singer/songwriter first picked up a guitar at age 10 and began playing gigs locally as a teen to help support him and his mother. But it wasn’t until he started writing music for himself—rather than what he thought others wanted to hear—that everything started to click. That’s when he wrote his 2017 debut single, “Play God”, a propulsive, politically charged slice of indie rock. It came from a place of deep desperation, “a time where I was like, ‘I need to prove myself. I need to do something that cuts through,’” he told Apple Music. The track earned him a slot on BBC’s Sound of 2018 shortlist, which led to a deal with Polydor Records and the release of his acclaimed 2019 debut, Hypersonic Missiles, an album that channels modern-day anxiety through heartfelt heartland rock. His 2021 follow-up, Seventeen Going Under, hit even harder, pumped full of soaring arrangements and bold statements that continue to prove Fender’s power as a mighty millennial voice for the working class. - Apple Music

Olivia Rodrigo

the cure

170x170bb.jpg

2nd single from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love

Released: 22nd May 2026

Label: Olivia Rodrigo

Video

Biography

“I’m the biggest emo drama queen,” Olivia Rodrigo (born in 2003 in Murrieta, CA) told Apple Music. But the key to letting it out is keeping it together, and balancing that tension has been key to the onetime High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star, who quickly established herself as one of pop’s next-generation leaders and has since proved herself adept at combining the twist-filled, sonically dense music of ’90s alt-rock with unabashed emotionalism. Rodrigo was just 17 when her first post-Disney hit, the weepy “drivers license,” took over pop at the beginning of 2021, but she had been getting ready for years, taking lessons in piano, voice, and acting as a child. A few months later, Rodrigo released her debut album, SOUR, a breakup record with a meticulous rage: “Where’s my f*****g teenage dream?” she wondered on "brutal," the album's Elastica-recalling opener. Whatever dreams she had during its genesis were vivid, as evidenced by lyrics that zero in on the details: an ex singing along to Billy Joel with his new love (the swirling “deja vu”); reading said ex’s self-help books “so you’d think that I was smart” (the stripped-down “enough for you”). GUTS, which followed in 2023, built on SOUR, with Rodrigo (and her producer and collaborator Dan Nigro) placing her pointillistic lyrics in an expanded sonic palette that incorporated influences from off-kilter ’90s acts like The Breeders (the illicit-thrill chronicle “bad idea right?”) and Butthole Surfers (the loose-limbed “get him back!”). While Rodrigo’s roots are in teen pop, her emotions—and her songs’ hooks—are relatable for listeners of all ages. - Apple Music

Lola Young

From Down Here

170x170bb.jpg

1st single from forthcoming studio album

Released: 22nd May 2026

Label: Island Records

Video

Biography

A stylistically dynamic vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Lola Young builds on the traditions of Amy Winehouse and Adele with her smoky vocals and fearless songwriting. The South East London native made an impression soon after 2019's debut EP Intro, earning a nomination for the 2021 Rising Star BRIT Award. Her first full-length, 2023's confessional My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely, laid the groundwork for her brash 2024's album This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway, home of the multi-platinum, viral single "Messy." With 2025's I'm Only F**king Myself, Young gave listeners more of her unguarded lyrics and genre-melding sounds. - Apple Music

Afternoon all! As always, NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

No regular chart show today due to Big Weekend, Radio 1 will probably do some sort of countdown at some stage before the OCC updates at 5:45.

When info becomes available I will post as quickly as I can and edit into the placeholder posts I've left. As always, please be patient with me, I am one person and can only react so fast!

They will be announcing the number 1 at least (I would assume doing a Top 10 countdown) as the show description for 5pm mentions it.

I'm going to record and listen to the full hour and 45 minutes anyway and record the chart recap!

I'm definitely recording that myself to put into my archives anyway.

If someone could @ me whenever there's an update on when the chart's coming, I'd appreciate that - not really interested in Big Weekend stuff!

You're even older than me, dinosaur!

I miss the days of the Radio 1 Roadshow touring the UK during the summer months - it was the highlight of the summer holidays when it came to my town.

" The fun started at 10 - live on air at 11 "

I always wanted to take part in the quiz bits and pieces which I always used to ace - I could have won a Radio 1 Goody Bag !
