Seeing as Burnham has gotten enough nominations to guarantee that he will be PM in 9 days, I figured it was about time to start the Labour government thread that we will use for his tenure atop the Labour Party.

(the number is 322 out of 403, so mathematically one short of a guarantee, but with 3 Labour MPs in positions who cannot vote, deputy speaker, PLP chair and party chair, it is guaranteed and would be anyway with these levels of overwhelming support and no other declared candidates)

In an embarrassing cock-up, the Daily Mail front page for 22 July has been leaked. Under the headline "Burnham in major sleaze row" the story begins "New Prime Minister Andy Burnham faced increasing calls to quit last night as it was revealed that he received three Ready Salted crisps from an employee of a company which was later awarded a £10,000 contract by a Labour council."

Starmer tipped to see HM The King around 10 am then Burnham at 11. Starmer's last PMQ's today.

Mahmood now hot favourite to be new Chancellor with Cooper demoted too. Ed Miliband either to back benches or stays in role.

Any thoughts?

I’m a big Ed fan with him taking on the populist right and their views on drill baby drill. But not sure a left wing Labour PM can appoint a left wing chancellor so would imagine it’ll be someone like Mahmoud or McFadden.

Seems to be between those two now Steve. Ed has too many against him getting it for Andy to risk it.

Well that's a fucking mistake if it is Mahmood.

Not only is she one of the worst members of the Labour Party as things currently stand, it's taking her away from a lightning rod position in Home Sec where she was managing a difficult position fairly well.

Miliband should be the man of the moment given, you know, heatwaves and the vital importance of getting us to energy independence, if he goes to the back benches after this I'm out of this.

Burnham isn't particularly left-wing. Don't let the Tory press define where people stand.

I know, he was originally best pals with the likes of James Purnell - a Blairite of there ever was one. No doubt he will be chief of staff or the likes. I do think Burnham is relatively leftist if he wants to be, he’s def a Brownite.

Think Ed is left wing myself, he def meant to change the way the Labour leader was elected so that if he lost the election it would give the left a voice. Plus the newspapers def hate him due to his (rightly) green agenda.

Mahmoud is basically the new generations Yvette Cooper. A centre right bureaucrat.

Would love Ed to be chancellor but as Chris said, I fear there’s too much to attack with that. He’s been leader of the opposition and although I 100% agree with his green agenda even if it just pisses certain flat earth et right wingers off.

At any rate I’m super fascinated to see the cabinet.

The press hates Miliband because he is to the left of Farage.

That’s when a party and leader has to lead rather than follow. Because let’s face it the general public are generally idiots.

Andy Burnham is now Labour Leader and will be PM on Monday.

The Guardian says their "sources" telling them that Mahmood will be Chancellor. Bookies favourite now too.

Will anyone be watching in the morning? BBC1` from 10am. ITV from 11am. Main Cabinet jobs announced later in day.

Cabinet starting to be revealed. Rachel Reeves sacked. Offered a lesser role, rumoured to be Foreign Sec. but turned it down so goes to back benches. Liz Kendall, DWP, sacked. So far 7 sacked from Cabinet.

Mahmood reportedly does not want to be Chancellor. Prefers to stay as Home Secretary and think she hasn't any financial experience.
