Deandria is a country in the Buzzjack Song Contest that has been competing (somewhat sporadically) since October 2008. We owe it to Sabrewulf, the Head of Delegation of Dalisska, for originally introducing us to the contest back in the day.

In this thread, I hope to keep up our list of entries, our thoughts on these entries, our semi + final placings, total points, and hopefully even points given and received. Bear with me as I hope to add everything accordingly.

I hope some of you join me in looking back at all of Deandria's entries, starting with...

BJSC 11: Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch

4th (out of 27)

In autumn 2008, Sabrewulf, who I had been friends with for about a year at the time, told me about BJSC. I found it fairly interesting so decided to sign up. Having very little idea about the nature of the then very young contest in-depth, I decided to just enter a song by Ladytron, a UK band that I was listening to a lot at that time (and still do occasionally now). 'Destroy Everything You Touch' from their third album Witching Hour (2005) stood out to me as a potential entry for whatever reason. I can see why, as I would call it a very catchy, electric and almost 'bombastic' electropop song.

To everyone's surprise, Deandria came 4th in the final on our first attempt, leading Sabrewulf to call us 'the dark horse of the contest' behind the scenes. I also remember a post by someone during the results show wondering if I would host if I were to win.

Our top pointer in that contest was Herzebania, who sent Tori Amos - Silent All These Years, a song I already knew and loved as I had started to explore Tori's music. They placed 20th.

BJSC 12: Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

DNQ - 21st (out of 22) in the semi

So, this is an interesting one in that I do think it's a really great song, but it's too well-known for BJSC, even in those days when the contest had well-known songs entered more often. I remember wondering about this in a thread back then and someone did confirm that it's a fantastic song but way too well-known for BJSC. I suspect that's one of the main reasons it did so poorly, I guess the contest had already started to move away from the more 'cheap' entries.

Massive Attack is of course another great musical act, having listened to all of their albums over the years. 'Unfinished Sympathy' from their debut album Blue Lines (1991) is a stand-out in their discography but doesn't particularly resemble or represent the rest of their music in my opinion, much of which is a lot darker than this, a slightly more upbeat, sweeping, string-laden song.

Deandria's top pointer in that contest was Kylienips, who sent Lisa Mitchell - Neopolitan Dreams, which came 7th.

OMG it’s cheap but I can’t knock you for sending like one of the greatest songs of all time!

BJSC 13: Hooverphonic - Mad About You

28th (out of 28)

Belgian pop/trip-hop band Hooverphonic (who have represented the country in Eurovision) released their album The Magnificent Tree in 2000, a very interesting and lush album, on which this song lies. Again, I have listened to every album of theirs. This is another lush, sweeping, string-laden song, and funnily enough, Hooverphonic have done a cover of Massive Attack's 'Unfinished Sympathy', our entry right before this one.

Personally I look at this song as a beautiful, likeable, catchy mix of pop and alternative. Not pure pop, not pure alternative, not pure trip-hop, but seems to be a mix of influences. A shame that it came last in the final.

Our top points in that contest went to Jester's Kingdom with Le Corps Mince de Françoise - Bitch of the Bitches, which placed 13th.

BJSC 14: Alanis Morissette - Straitjacket

DNQ - 21st (out of 23) in the semi

I've never been particularly proud of this entry. I love Alanis, but she has way better songs for me that I could've tried to enter here. If I remember correctly, my thinking at the time was 'these people like and enter catchier, poppier songs', so I figured I would enter one of my favourite artists but with a more punchy song, even if the song was never really one of my favourites of hers.

It comes from Alanis' album Flavors of Entanglement (2008), the album on which Alanis took a more electronic turn in her music when compared to previous works.

I don't want to be too negative here so I will say it is a catchy song and it's at least a little bit interesting that I entered a lesser-known Alanis Morissette song to the contest.

Our top pointer in that contest was B.a.N.G who sent the wonderful electronic act Röyksopp with 'Happy Up Here', a track I already knew well. They placed 18th.

BJSC 15: Au Revoir Simone - Dark Halls

DNQ - 20th (out of 24) in the semi

From the 2007 album The Bird of Music, this was the first of my entries that was a brand new discovery for me. I think I just randomly found it on YouTube and was enamoured by its cute sound, vocals and melody. I don't really listen to this one anymore (although I am doing so right now for a refresher x) but it's another very catchy song, this one being more indie-pop in its sound.

I haven't heard the album, and I don't know if I've even heard any other Au Revoir Simone songs, but I'd say it's a cute enough early entry in my back catalogue. I remember someone (possibly @gooddelta) posting at the time that they were shocked it DNQ'd.

Deandria's top points in that contest went to Quotosibb with Video Villain - Paranoia, which came 12th.

Crazy to see something like Unfinished Sympathy come 2nd last in a semi. I agree it would have only been because people penalised it for being cheap.

Oh I still love this Au Revoir Simone song, nice to be reminded of it!

BJSC 16: Halou - Political

DNQ - 19th (out of 23) in the semi

This is interesting because while this subtle and gentle beauty DNQ'd for me in 2009, I entered Halou to the most recent Unknown Pleasures in the current year (2026) and won with the gorgeous 'I'll Carry You'. Funnily enough, these songs are next to each other on the 2001 album Wiser, their second album.

I don't think my words can do the San Francisco band Halou justice really. They really are an incredible lesser-known gem. One of my favourite bands, I've even talked to them a bit on Instagram. They've also made music in several side projects that I like a lot too. I love their artistry, creativity and authentically exploratory music. This song 'Political' in particular is incredibly dreamy and sort of float-y. I actually hope someone can make a nice discovery out of it from this, especially as Halou have now won Unknown Pleasures!

Halou's most popular song is 'Honeythief' from their 2006 album Wholeness & Separation, which included some alternative rock influences, not just the largely more electronic music previously offered by them. 'Honeythief' has over 8 million plays on Spotify, their highest.

Deandria's top points in that contest went to Spizil (a country I don't remember at all, oops) with The Corrs - Summer Sunshine, a song I already knew. They placed 10th.

BJSC 17: Regina Spektor - Samson

20th (out of 29)

There are two versions of 'Samson' that I'm aware of. I specifically entered the one from the 2002 album aptly titled Songs. The other version is on the 2006 Begin To Hope album (probably the better-known album, with songs such as 'Fidelity', 'Better' and 'On the Radio').

At that time I was listening quite a lot to Regina Spektor and this was one of the songs I probably liked most from her. A very sweet minimalistic piano & vocal ballad, I remember I enjoyed singing this song a lot at the time and I enjoy her whimsical lyrics.

Our top pointer in that contest was JRK-off (lol, I didn't remember them being called that 🥲) with Owl City - Strawberry Avalanche. This was actually the first Owl City song I ever heard and I fell in love with his music. I remember dancing ecstatically around the kitchen to 'Strawberry Avalanche', something about it just captured me immensely. It placed 7th.

Samson was robbed blind. One of my favourite songs.

BJSC 18: Röyksopp - This Must Be It

17th (out of 29)

Apparently 'This Must Be It' does have an official music video on YouTube (I don't know if I've ever watched it), but it shortens the song by about a minute, and I entered the full version, so that's the one I am putting here. x

I think this was very much an impulse entry. I've always loved Röyksopp but I'm not really sure why I entered this particular song by them. I do like it, and I guess I was obsessed with their new album at the time, 2009's Junior, which had some bangers but I rarely listen to it anymore. If I'm in the mood for Röyksopp, I would probably be most inclined to go for their debut album Melody A.M. from 2001, which I once called 'my favourite electronic chillout album'.

I wouldn't consider this one of my favourite Röyksopp songs, so yeah I am unsure why I entered this particular one but it's catchy and quite 'electric'. I also enjoy the unique vocals of Karin Dreijer, who also sang on one of my favourite Röyksopp songs 'What Else Is There?', has released music as Fever Ray, and as part of The Knife.

Our top points in that contest went to Kylienips (for a second time!) who sent Melys - Chinese Whispers, coming 22nd.

Everything you've posted so far was before I joined but I have heard a few of them anyway - 'Unfinished Sympathy' obviously an all time classic (backlash against cheapness or not that coming second from last in a semi-final is utterly outrageous x) and I know the Ladytron and Röyksopp songs too.

BJSC 11: Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch

This sounds like a nice enough entry to introduce us to the world of Deandria. I have always liked Ladytron as an artist and this debut entry is a nice way to make yourself known and finish just outside of the podium! Great start and we thank Sabrewulf for his introduction too haha.

BJSC 12: Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An utter classic from Bristol based Massive Attack which would have garnered big points from me if I had entered at the time. Its overall result is disappointing but perhaps the remarks you shared explained the reasons. Still it's lovely to see a Trip-Hop legend like this artist in your entry history! 

BJSC 13: Hooverphonic – Mad About You

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

More wonderful trip-hop! I hadn't realised you started sending this genre so early on! It's great to see and there are still some beautifully produced sounds within your rich history. The fact this came last place is utterly disgraceful, and I wish I could have done something about that! The video of that massive claw thing is spellbinding haha. 

BJSC 14: Alanis Morissette – Straitjacket 

⭐️⭐️

This one didn't grab me sorry. Perhaps it needs a few listens but I also do appreciate you changing up your sound too and not being a one trick pony! This is another example of an artist I know you have strong feelings for and it's great to see her make an appearance. I wouldn't have given this any points at the time though, at least I don't think so. 

BJSC 15: Au Revoir Simone – Dark Halls

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A nice little uptempo pop song. Quite fun actually and another slight alteration to what people were starting to get used to from Deandria! I think this is good enough to do well even in 2026, so kudos for finding it way back then, it's rather pleasant. Indie Pop was certainly a new way to go for you and I'm sure we will be seeing this again in the entries to come!

BJSC 16: Harlou – Political

⭐️⭐️

Ah back to the trip-hop again! The results suggest it wasn't a popular one but I think the current alt-bloc would eat this sound up and it would come Top 10. It's just a little too trippy for my liking. I think I could get behind it but I do prefer the other trip-hop entries so far, they do more for me. 

BJSC 17: Regina Spektor – Samson

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is what's missing from BJSC now, people reluctant to send a ballad because of the backlash or expected failure of it to qualify, but it really changes the pace and feel of a contest when a lovely well written song like this shows up. It's a lovely piece from Deandria and deserved more. 

BJSC 18: Röyksopp – This Must Be It

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Moving into the electronic sound with this entry and of course it's everyone's favourite Röyksopp, whose album Melody A.M. is a long-time fave in my collection. This definitely does sound of the mid 00s electronic era they had, and it's quite a nice change up for Deandria, and the vocalist definitely sounds very familiar even from songs not mentioned.

BJSC 20: Pogo - Expialidocious

DNQ - 23rd (out of 26) in the semi

After a one-contest break, this seemingly standalone track from 2009 was one of my 'weirdest' entries thus far, a very creative remix of scenes from Mary Poppins! It also has clips of Mary Poppins in the video.

I don't remember what brought this on in terms of me entering it here, but I guess I discovered it on YouTube and fell in love with it. It's a really fun tune with its sliced-up English words, a collage of sounds and phrases if you will. I wonder how this would do in the contest nowadays! It's a bit of an earworm.

Deandria's top points in that contest went to Stevinia who sent Mr Hudson - White Lies, coming 20th.

We need to do a 'Let's Go Round Again' spin-off to bring back one of our old entries for another bite of the cherry. Maybe the rules could be they were either a DNQ or bottom 10 in the final.

Some of these really old entries could definitely do better now, I can't remember Expialidocious but it's very charming and would definitely do better now. Just checked and seems I was in the opposite semi (so maybe didn't hear it back then).

Oh I considered this for the retro trip hop contest but realised it was (just) released in the wrong century. So I went with “2 Wicky” instead, which came 7th but I feel like this might have done better.
