  • Yeah - I have all #1's from 1989 - 2006 on Single CD. For the 1990's only a very few Top 20 hits are missing: #4: 1990 New Kids On The Block - Cover Girl (there is only a hard to find Promo Single CD

  • Sadeness would be top 2 for me, possibly #1 I bought the single at the time and was mesmerised by how different it was to everything else I'd heard in the charts up to that point. I can still remembe

Thank you Jim for this great rundown. Here are my final rankings.

*Great Tier;

  1. The KLF feat. The Children Of The Revolution - 3AM Eternal

  2. Enigma - Sadeness Part I

*Very good tier;

  1. The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go

  2. Chesney Hawkes - The One And Only

*Good tier;

  1. Michael Jackson - Black Or White

  2. Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

*OK tier;

  1. Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

  2. The Simpsons - Do The Bartman

  3. George Michael and Elton John - Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me

  4. Hale And Pace and The Stonkers - The Stonk

*Don't like tier;

  1. Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff - Dizzy

  2. Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives

  3. U2 - The Fly

  4. Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter

  5. Cher - The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)

  6. Queen - Innuendo

  7. Jason Donovan - Any Dream Will Do

Neither a Queen nor an U2 fan - both of my favourites of them are dance remixes (Living On My Own (Freddie alone) and Even Better Than The Real Thing) and apart from that I really don't get into their stuff.

I was aware you were a fan of The Clash and U2 but couldn't recall what you thought of 'The Fly' specifically, great #1 pick! I checked out Achtung Baby when going through early '90s Mercury Prize nominees and thought it was a genius album, with that standing out as a highlight.

I think my own top 10 would look like this:

01 Enigma - Sadeness Part I

02 The KLF - 3AM Eternal (feat. The Children Of The Revolution)

03 Queen - Innuendo

04 U2 - The Fly

05 The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go

06 Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives

07 Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

08 Michael Jackson - Black Or White

09 Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff - Dizzy

10 George Michael & Elton John - Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me

Thanks Jim for doing this! Much taste on display and I enjoyed reading your great commentaries.

I’m not a huge fan of The Shoop Shoop Song, Cher had many better singles before and after.

Prefer the Linda Lewis version from '75.

From Wiki.

"It's in His Kiss" is a song written and composed by Rudy Clark. It was first released as a single in 1963 by Merry Clayton but did not chart. The song was made a hit a year later when recorded by Betty Everett, who reached No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100

Great rundown and kudos the number one choice. I always thought U2 did exactly whatthey needed to do after Rattle and Hum and i rate The Fly as an off the wall exciting departure. That said it wouldn't be top 5 for me but is top end worthy. The Clash hit is ok but even first time round i wasnt that enthusiastic about it. I prefer other Clash tracks and especially adore E=mc2 Big Audio Dynamite's genius track. That should have been picked for the advert and belated Mick Jones chart topper!

Thanks Jim. I possibly still need to give “The Fly” more listens but it’s already crept up somewhat on where I’d have put it a few years ago.

1 Sadeness Part I

2 Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

3 Innuendo

4 3AM Eternal

5 These Are The Days Of Our Lives

6 Black Or White

7 The Fly

8 The One And Only

9 (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

10 The Shoop Shoop Song

11 Any Dream Will Do

12 Do The Bartman

13 Dizzy

14 Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me

15 Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter

16 I Wanna Sex You Up

17 The Stonk

The Fly is my second favorite number 1 single of all time.

It's thrilling that they came back with this after they'd painted themselves into a corner by releasing ever more earnest music throughout the 80s.

This was noisy, scratchy, edgy and features one of my favorite guitar solos by anyone. It's as if they were fed up sounding like U2. A proper re-invention. They had a great decade.
