Well, it's not an Oscars nomination yet but it qualified to the next round (for example, Miley Cyrus's, Lady Gaga's songs were out)...

Fingers crossed!

Pharrell, Elton John, Lainey Wilson Land on Oscars’ Best Original Song Shortlist

Two songs from Emelia Pérez also made the cut, as did tracks by Kneecap, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and Robbie Williams

December 17, 2024

Songs by Pharrell, Elton John, and Lainey Wilson, as well as multiple selections from Emelia Pérez, have made the Oscars’ shortlist for Best Original Song.

Pharrell’s “Piece by Piece,” the title track from his animated Lego biopic, made the cut, as did John’s “Never Too Late,” co-written with Brandi Carlile for his recent documentary. And Wilson secured a shortlist nod for her contribution to Twisters, “Out of Oklahoma,” co-written with Luke Dick and Shane McAnally.

The two songs from Emilia Pérez to make the shortlist were “El Mal” and “Mi Comino,” both of which were just nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. The two tracks were written by the film’s core musical team, Clément Ducol and Camille, while writer-director Jacque Audiard also contributed to “El Mal.”

The 15-song shortlist also includes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “Compress/Repress” from Challengers; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Tell Me It’s You” from Mufasa, and Robbie Williams’ “Forbidden Road” from his upcoming primate-infused biopic, Better Man. Perennial Oscar hopeful Diane Warren is once again in the running, making the shortlist for “The Journey” from Tyler Perry’s new WWII drama, The Six Triple Eight. (Warren has been nominated 15 times, and while she’s never won a competitive Oscar, she did receive an Honorary Award in 2022.)

Another exciting shortlist nod was “Sick in the Head” by celebrated Belfast rap trio Kneecap from their lightly fictionalized biopic. Maren Morris snuck onto the list, too, as a co-writer on Delacey’s “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, as did Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote “Harper and Will Go West” from Will Ferrell and Harper Steele’s doc, Will and Harper.

The full Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song is below. Other Academy Awards shortlist categories released today include Best International Film, Documentary, Animated and Live Action Best Makeup, Visual Effects, and Sound.

Robbie Williams’ ‘Better Man’ Original Song Disqualified From Oscars After Making Shortlist

The Robbie Williams song “Forbidden Road” from “Better Man,” shortlisted earlier this week for best original song, has been disqualified, Variety has learned.

The song, insiders report, “incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film” and so has been deemed ineligible for Oscar.

Academy rules state that the words and music of any song submitted for awards consideration must be “original and written specifically for the motion picture.”

The melody of “Forbidden Road” contains marked similarities to that of “I Got a Name,” the Charles Fox-Norman Gimbel song performed by Jim Croce in the 1973 film “The Last American Hero.” Coincidentally, Fox is one of three governors of the Academy’s music branch.

A letter went out to the 400-plus members of the music branch this morning. Reportedly the similarities just came to the attention of the branch executive committee this week, and the decision to drop the song came yesterday afternoon.

Noted the letter: “This is a decision that both honors our rules and protects the special nature of the Original Song and Score categories.”

This means the original song shortlist will be trimmed to 14 titles from the previous 15. Disqualifications like this generally do not result in a “replacement” song. Music branch voters will choose from the remaining 14 titles when voting for Oscar nominations begins Jan. 8.

Why Robbie Williams Was Disqualified from Oscars 2025 for His 'Better Man' Original Song

Robbie Williams has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for his song “Forbidden Road” from Better Man, but now he has been disqualified from Oscars contention.

Better Man is a new film about the life of the British pop star with a CGI monkey playing the singer instead of an actual actor. The musical uses Robbie‘s songs and “Forbidden Road” is a new one written for the film.

The song was up for the Best Original Song award at the upcoming 2025 Oscars and the Academy already revealed that the song made it on the shortlist of 15 songs that will compete for a nomination.

Now, it has been revealed that the Academy has disqualified the song.

Variety reports that the song “incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film.” To be eligible for Best Original Song, a song must be “original and written specifically for the motion picture.” This is why songs from the movie Wicked are not eligible for this category, as all the songs in Part One were written for the Broadway show.

It’s reported that “Forbidden Road” contains similarities to the song “I Got a Name” from the 1973 movie The Last American Hero. Variety reports that Charles Fox, who co-wrote that song, actually serves as a governor on the Academy’s music branch.

“This is a decision that both honors our rules and protects the special nature of the Original Song and Score categories,” the Academy told the members of the music branch.

That is a bummer.

I can’t imagine it’s anything but completely coincidental - obviously everyone involved in the songwriting would have been

aware of the rules, so if they had realised they’d have changed it.

Oh well...I saw the comments under the video when the track came out, that these two songs are similar. I hopped it would not matter. But since the guy owning the song is governor at the Oscars for music department it obviously got busted.

Some free extra drama exposure just in time for the movie release though.

Will there be an issue for the same reason with Golden Globes etc ...

Well, guys, yes, it's a pity.

Did you read the article where Rob told he wanted to use another song for end titles but Michael convinced him to change it to Forbidden Road?

Well, Rob felt something in advance :)

Well, let's say it's a regret mistake but:

- it still a great song and who knows, maybe after its premiere some people will hear it as Robbie's trademark song (i mean the people who didn't know Robbie so much)

- it'a the Oscars mgmt mistake too. If they choose it for semifinal it means they were not so attentive to their rules so much. And what's more important because of this their mistake another song was out. So it's not a good advert for Oscars.

- for Robbie... well, knowing him, it would be a motivation to him to record another song for win.

It think it is a shame because it is basically a slap on the wrist in front of his musical peers, those who vote. They should have notified this before the final 15.

So, I recommend you do not to be upset too much.

And I'm posting this new and unofficial remix for giving you better mood.

Also a good adoption for the song.

True, I know his fans will really support the film when it is out. Not to be dissmissive but there are the Oscars and the real world, i.e national global charts. Songs people remember all over the world in popular culture.

How many ordinary people truly remember Best Original song winners?

Glad it is less than a week untill out in the cinemas!

I like your attitude Alex :P

Really nice remix .

In the real world very few people remember best song winners these days - with a few rare exceptions they tend not to make a splash.

But it is still a big blow for the film as it’s one of the few Oscar categories the film had a serious chance.

Lead performance is a non-starter with a mocap character, the supporting roles have had no love,

and there’s no traction I can see for director or script.

The only remaining chance to stay ‘in the conversation’ now is VFX.

And it’s always bad for Robbie when accusations of plagiarism or not giving proper songwriting

credit rear their head.

It is what it is . I am not going to let this spoil my enjoyment of the movie , The song to me fits in really well with the storyline .
