The OCC tell me that the Book is being 'rested' in 2007.

That there will probably be a 2008 Edition. That Guinness no longer

have the Contract to do the Book - it ended earlier in 2007.

Also, Guinness Publishing no longer want to Publish Music Books -

or Chart Books. I have been told all of this by a UK Chart Expert,

(who has also compiled 'Music Books'), and also by a DJ, & also by

a Guy whom I know at The OCC. That's 3 people, who ought to know.

It is up to The OCC when the Book comes out again.

Guinness Publishing are not interested in it anymore

The OCC have not decided when the Book will next come out,

but it will probably be next Year.

There is nothing else to 'find out', really - everything that there is to

know is in this Post.

I have spent all Week making enquiries, and, what I have found out, is here.

That explains why  the book's site has not been updated or added to this year. Shame!

I've emailed the author of the British Hit Singles & Albums, the response as follows

Hi Martin - It is highly unlikely the 20th edition of British Hit Singles & Albums will appear until 2008. There are a number of reasons for this. Not least is the ability (if we wait awhile) to incorporate a number of the new downloads populating the chart since chart rules changed in January. Our usual publication date would not have allowed us to see these in print.

David Roberts

Hello,

Yes, I have also been told that both David Roberts, ('Hits' Book Editor),

& Dave McAleer, (its Chart Consultant), will PROBABLY still be working

on the 'BHS&A' Book, when it next comes out.

However, The OCC assures me, that Guinness Publishing themselves are not

going to Publish the Book again. Their Contract with The OCC ended earlier in 2007.

I have been told that they no longer wish to Publish Chart Books. I do not know

if this is true - it is just what I have been told.

I have also been told this by a Guy - who used to compile other UK Chart Books - &

also, by a UK DJ.

So, IF the Book re-appears in 2008, it is unlikely to be under the name 'Guinness'.

Also, everything that David has told Mikey, was told to me, (by David),

in about March. After that, I was told quite different things, by 3 other sources.

Then, one has to wonder why the Guinness British Hit Singles Site has closed down.

Its Forum has gone. Its 'Trivia' Page has also gone.

You just get a Photo of the 2006 Edition of the Book, now.

I would say that this has happened because its Contract with The OCC has ended

- earlier in 2007.

We will see what happens in 2008.....

Hello,

I have done some further checking. Guinness have sold their Publishing Company

to another Company, who decided that they were not interested in Publishing

Music, or Chart Books.

So, the 'New' Company sold their Publishing Company, to The OCC, who are now finding

it difficult to find a Publishing Company to Publish the Guinness 'Hits' Book.

Until they do, - depending on how long it takes - the Guinness 'Hits'

Book will not be coming out. It is still not certain if it will be called a

'Guinness' Book, when it - finally - does come out.

Thanks for your research, zeus555, typical when it would have been the 20th Edition, it might never happen, shall have to wait until 2008 and see what happens.

Hello Mikey,

I have just sent out 3 more E-mails - to try - hard - to get full clarification,

(simplification), as to just what is happening with the Guinness Book.

It LOOKS like, we will not see a, 'Hits' Book, until 2008 now, whether it is under

the name 'Guinness', or not.

It MAY well come out in June or July 2008, & Dave McAleer, & David Roberts may

well be working on it.

However, the real puzzle is that I am being told - by 3 different UK Music Industry sources,

- that Guinness no longer have a Contract/Deal with The OCC to Publish the Book.

That Guinness have sold their Publishing Rights to another Publishing Company,

& the 'new' Company is not interested in Publishing Chart Books!

So, the 'new' Company have sold the Rights to The OCC, who now have

the Rights for the 'Hits' Book - but no one to actually Publish it for them!

In the coming Week, I am going to try - very hard - to get some simple

answers to all of this.

It is all very confusing, to every Chart Fan, on the Internet, who likes to buy

the Guiness Book.

I will try my best to get the full facts, anyhow.

Hello,

Earlier in 2007, Guinness told me that the 2007 Edition, (the 20th Edition),

was coming out. That it would be coming out later than the usual May or June,

as they wanted to add some Months of 2007 in it too - to show numerous

Down Load Hits, & to reflect the new 2007 Chart Rules.

However, 2 UK Music Industry sources have recently told me that the

Contract between Guinness, & the OCC, has now ended. That it will

not be renewed, as Guinness Publishing have decided that they no longer

want to Publish any Music Books - or Chart Books - at all.

But i thought there was no actual 'Guinness Publishing' as such rather just Guinness being a brand owned by entertainment rights firm Hit Entertainement so i guess that as they would wanna use their brand as a total 360 thing the probs have thought that they cant increase that brand into TV and esp American TV like they prob do with the World Record brand.

and I suppose with Bob the Builder is easier to extend the brand to cover loads of things

Hello,

Well, I looked around the Internet, & it is definitely called

Guinness Publishing Ltd.

Hit Entertainment seem to be the Company that owns Guinness.

I am trying very hard to find out what is going on.

I have been told that Guinness no longer have the 'Rights',

(or should it be 'Contract'?), to Publish the 'Hits' Book.

They sold the Rights to some other Publishing Company,

when their 'Contract' with The OCC ended - earlier in 2007.

They did this because they decided that they no longer want to Publish

Music Books, or Chart Books.

Then, it turned out that the 'new' Publishing people were not interested

in Chart Books either! So, they sold the Rights back to The OCC.

So, The OCC own ALL the 'Rights', again - and they - The OCC - are

looking for another Publisher, to Publish the 'Hits' Book.

The OCC told me that they are giving the 'Hits' Book, a 'Rest', in 2007.

It will probably be out again in 2008.

However, The OCC may want it to go back to bringing it out every 2 Years,

as it will sell better then, anyhow - as you get more 'New Hits' in it, than if it is

out every Year.

I am trying to get more details about ALL of this.

I am NOT a 'Legal' Person, so I am explaining all of this -

as I understand it - from various sources, who have tried to explain it to me.

So, I MAY have misunderstood some of it.

Is the book returning this year
  • 3 weeks later...
Can someone in the know give an update on the situation please.

Hello,

In late February I asked The OCC about a 2008 UK Chart Book - whether

there will be one. (They would know, as compilers of UK Chart Books have

to get a License from The OCC, to publish such Books).

Here is a direct quote from the reply that I got - on February 29th:,

'We are looking to do a book - it's something we are keen to get out, but whether

that will be this year or next, and what format that will be is still being discussed.

We also have to find a publisher of course, and it depends on what their schedules

are etc...'

END OF QUOTE

So, The OCC want a UK Chart Book to come out. It could come out in 2008 -

OR - we may have to wait until 2009.....

When the Singles and Album books were seperate. They used to be published every 2 years.

Singles on the odd numbered years and the albums on even numbered years.

Better if it's combined though.

I agree - it's better to spend £20 and get both singles and albums in one, rather than (say) £15 on one for the singles and £13 for one with albums. (I'm just using those two figures as a guess, especially since there'd be more singles than albums.)
