An alarming new study has revealed that Scotland is the second fattest nation in the developed world, behind America.

More than a quarter of the Scottish population is obese, at 25.5 per cent, compared to 32.2 per cent in America, and just 8.3 per cent in Norway. England comes fourth in the table at 22.5 per cent.

Scottish children are suffering an alarmingly high rate of obesity, according to the figures released by the Scottish Public Health Observatory. And women are also particularly at risk, since they are most likely to develop serious health problems from being obese.

Women are 13 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, four times more likely to suffer high blood pressure, three times more likely to develop cancer of the colon and 30 per cent more likely to suffer a stroke.

Obese men are five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and about twice as likely to develop osteoarthritis.

Heavily overweight people are 18 per cent more likely to need hospital treatment than those of normal weight in Scotland, with obesity costing the NHS £171 million in 2001 (the most recent year for which the figures are available). And in 2003, 500,000 cases of high blood pressure, 50,000 cases of coronary heart disease and 900 of cases of cancer, mostly of the colon, were caused by obesity in Scotland.

The Scottish Executive has launched plans to try and tackle the problem of childhood obesity by removing sweets and fizzy drinks from schools, serving less deep-fried food and more oily fish. It believes that by targeting children, it can make a difference for the future.

Percentage of obese members of the population around the world

United States: 32.2

Scotland: 25.5

Mexico: 24.2

England: 22.5

Canada: 22.4

Greece: 21.9

I know we have had threads on obesity before.

But how can we get the message across?

How can we stop eating ourseleves to death?

It took a doctor telling me in no uncertain terms to scare me into action. But what if he hadn't?

Overeating is so deep seated now. Political correctness overlooks the fact that being over weight is damaging to your health.

Wow thats suprising..sure anyone would guess America to be #1 but Scotland #2 shocking :o

I have lost 4 pounds in a fortnight so that'll help the average

On a serious note, I'm not surprised. And I would also hazzard a guess that there are more obese people living in the most deprived areas of Scotland.

I'll comment on this further when (if) I get my broadband back. <_<

What scared me into action was getting stuck on a spiral staircase up to a porch in one of the churches I enjoy visiting. I am going back now I have lost 2 stone in a year to see if I can manage it.
Sorry but I'm not suprised at all! Most Scottish people I've seen seem to be quite fat. Btw I'm not slagging off Scottish people as I know quite a feel lovely scots I'm just stating what I've seen..

One shouldn't be scared into action.

One should be loved, nurtured and encourage to be accepting of oneself and others.

Only then when you love yourself, will you desire to eat well, to enjoy going out and doing physical exercise and will gladly walk to the shops rather then getting into a 4 by 4 because your to scared.

It's all about society and how we live within it. While we choose the scare option things will not get better.

...and so do we do that then?

How do we make everyone loved and nurtured?

How to we stop people needing a Big Mac to feel happy?

Oh dear god. I would never though that. And the USA only 7% higher? Very hard to believe and very suprising. :o
That's well shocking tbh. Where are Wales and Northern Ireland in the list?

im sure there are other catching up like china, with it booming economy and fast food chains

*worried look*

I don't find it coincidence that since 9/11 there seems to have been a huge upsurge in obesity.

I really think all this talk on terror, war and negative $h!t that the media keeps pumping out on a daily basis is really affecting people

People no longer seem to want to get out and LIVE LIFE anymore.

Could it be that the Western world is DEPRESSED with all the doom and gloom and finding solace in food or are spending more time at home

and no longer getting the normal amount of activity that they should???

Not wanting to go to the park or walk the streets anymore because of muggings, crime etc??

Maybe being large makes people feel safer out on the street , especially women???

Maybe they feel less of a target to all the loonies??

There has to be a reason why. I'm not interested in the affect but I'm really interested in what is causing this and the reasons why people are giving up.

People are obese for a multitude of reasons. Some people eat because they are depressed or have low self esteem. That isn't why so many people in Scotland are fat though. The majority are fat because they order take aways every night, drink too much alcohol and bring their kids up on a diet of stodge and junk food. Nobody seems to cook in my street. All I see is delivery vans from the local Chinese/Indian/Chip Shop. The big slapper next door to me (her of the assorted kids to assorted fathers) is never in her kitchen. I giggle when I hear her shout her kids in for their dinner. 'Your tea's ready she'll bellow'. Just as the delivery van from Qintiliani's chip shop disappears up the road. And all summer she is planked on a deckchair in her garden. Getting fatter and fatter by the month. She doesn't have low self esteem. She's just a lazy big cow who stuffs her face endlessly. <_<

It is definitely getting worse though. You only need to people watch on any Scottish street. We could easily give the Americans a run for their money.

I've been to scotland a few months back, and I didnt hardly see any fat people.

Whereas in America, there is a 'larger' person in every direction. I dont blame them, I blame the amount of fast food restuarants & doughnuts shops that are about in the USA.
