Posted November 22, 200717 yr Why are they all flopping this year? Britneys comeback, big letdown. Kylies comeback, another big letdown. Spice Girls .. Kelly Clarkson Even Christina Agulieras last album failed. What's the deal? They are all putting out pretty decent music, that would've normally charted well just not this year for some reason. Will we only see huge sales for Madonna and Mariah when they come out with new music? Or will they flop too.
November 22, 200717 yr Success goes in circles...these acts all had HUGE albums last time round so in comparison their latest albums would seem to be relative flops Apart from Kylie of course as Body Language was dire...X is much better than Body Language but a lot of people won't risk buying the album now because of the underperforming 2 Hearts... just look at Pink. Mizzunderstood was HUGE in 2002, then Try This was a bit of a flop in late 2003...but then in 2006/2007 I'm Not Dead has been a massive seller because it had better singles. If the artists pick good singles they will generally have more success than if they pick poor ones :)
November 22, 200717 yr on the other hand.. sugababes and girls aloud did/are doing good both having good albums before
November 22, 200717 yr If I can use my favourite artist as an example, and agree with gooddelta, it all goes around in circles. Celine couldn't stop selling albums in the 90's. The Colour Of My Love, Falling Into, Let's Talk About Love, These Are Special Times and All The Way just sold and sold and sold. Even on her big comeback in 2002, A New Day Has Come sold bucketloads before she went to Vegas. One Heart sold moderately whilst she was there and even the insipid baby inspired Miracle album charted respectably. Now though on her much hyped comeback the lead single "Taking Chances" is doing nothing for her and it seems the album is falling out of the top 10 after just a week too. So I guess everyone has their time to sell loads, swings and roundabouts really.
November 22, 200717 yr Author on the other hand.. sugababes and girls aloud did/are doing good both having good albums before I meant worldwide artists who would normally sell a million in the first week. It just hasn't happened this time around which I found odd. Kylie still might get good first week sales, but I doubt it after the comeback single under performing. I know Amy Winehouse, Girls Aloud, Leona, Sugababes all do well here, but not many other places.

Just to take Madonna as an example, no matter what she puts out she would normally get huge sales, I mean even American Life went to number 1 in numerous countries and I know she has a huge fanbase but I would've thought Britney/Kylie/Christina would rival her in those stakes, worldwide anyway - in the UK Britney has less album buying fans than her, but in the States she has more and vise versa. Just didn't seem to happen for any of them. Edited November 22, 200717 yr by Milk Maid
November 22, 200717 yr It's all to do with single choice really. I mean Rihanna & Sugababes are still on top form.
November 22, 200717 yr Alicia Keys has just sold 760,000 copies of her album in one week in the States. Carrie Underwood topped half a million in her first week of release as well. Rihanna's success has been phenomenal this year. Beyounce keeps beyouncing along. And Leonazilla is just about to devour the rest of the world. Edited November 22, 200717 yr by 6weeksatnumber7

I guess I more meant the females who are usually the dominant successful females suddenly flopping. Edited November 22, 200717 yr by Milk Maid

But you can add : Jamelia, SEB, Natasha B, Joss Stone, Mutya Buena, ... albums sales have been very disappointing for all of these artists :( And it's a shame really. But at the same time, you can't expect huge sellers to be huge sellers everytime they release a new album. The hype is not the same, the "new" factor has gone, etc etc.
November 22, 200717 yr How can Britney possibly be flopping? Her music is selling the way it is with NO PROMOTION No other artist has maintained the success she is having at the moment (with no promo). Edited November 22, 200717 yr by Dan.
November 22, 200717 yr No other artist has maintained the success she is having at the moment (with no promo). Elvis? Just kidding :P
November 22, 200717 yr Im optimistic about these flops because i just think of Nelly Furtado who had a big debut album and then failed to get a top 10 single next although because it wasn't so commercialised and then in 2006 she came back stronger than ever before. Im sure about 66% of follow ups to breakthrough debut albums don't sell as well as the first one. I think that after the 2nd one doesn't do as well (they commonly have a one single hit and the rest flop) then they just fade away. Amerie flopped this year, i think it was pretty underated.
November 22, 200717 yr Britney has sold 850k+ albums worldwide with Blackout in just 3 weeks, had a top three single on the world charts, and Gimme More has sold almost 1.5 million worldwide. And Piece Of Me has sold more then 80k in the US and it is a week until it is even released onto radio. Christina's album still sold more then 4 million worldwide, even though the album was almost more then double the price of a regular cd, and it was very experimental. Last time I checked Kylie was doing quite well, even though her album has not pleased all critics. How can it be considered a flop when it hasn't hardly even been released. Flop what? Will we only see huge sales for Madonna and Mariah when they come out with new music? Or will they flop too. Britney - No promotion by the artist (other than of the negative sort), but it has (deservedly) had the best reviews any of her albums has received because it is really good. Kylie - It's not even out yet. Although the reviews have been lukewarm at best. Spice Girls - Very poor new songs, have not helped. But it is a Greatest Hits album & best to wait to Xmas after they are in the UK to tour to label it a flop or not. Kelly Clarkson - Flop of the year. No question. The album bombed faster than Michelle McManus & Rik Waller tied to a 100 ton weight dropped out of an aeroplane. Christina Ag - OK. Not a huge success, but hardly a disaster either. Oh, and what about the success this year of Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Nelly Furtado, Kate Nash & Amy MacDonald.... Still the less said about recent albums by Joss Stone, Natasha Beddingfield, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Jamelia, etc.... the better>
November 22, 200717 yr I don't think they've flopped at all? Just because Kylie's comeback single limps in at #4? Her album hasn't even been released yet so how can you say she has flopped? Same with the Spice Girls and Britney. It's OVERHYPE that's all. People expect them to be huge just because it's THEM. But end of the day if the material is weak of course it's not going to sell as much as their previous better stuff. People on here and the media in general are all 'oh so and so is so amazing they're going to be huge'. Britney's always in the press that'll make her be #1 for sure. I would hardly call Britney having a #3 single and #2 album, the Spices having a #2 album and a top ten hit a flop. And there's others I could list as well. They've just been overestimated that's all.
November 22, 200717 yr Female Acts been doing quite well! Establish artists have been struggling but on the whole things are little different from a few years ago. Only thing is less dance music.
November 22, 200717 yr I don't think its anything to do with individuals, its all down to material. A fantastic song will always do well. The other problem is that people are getting bored with being fed the same stuff all the time.
