Radiohead's In Rainbows opens up narrow chart lead

11:50 | Wednesday January 2, 2008

By Paul Williams

The XL-issued Radiohead’s In Rainbows is leading the first albums market of 2008 following its long-awaited physical debut, but it is only experiencing a narrow lead over Take That’s Beautiful World.

The album, which was famously issued by the band and their management themselves last autumn as a name-you-price download, is presently around 4,000 sales ahead of Polydor’s Take That album following its Monday physical release, according to newly-issued retail figures. If In Rainbows does finish at number one by week’s end, it will be the Oxford band’s fifth UK albums chart-topper, and will replace Syco/Sony BMG’s Leona Lewis whose seven-week run at one with Spirit is almost certain not to be extended this Sunday.

In what is traditionally a very quiet time of year for new releases, In Rainbows is poised to be the only brand new entry to the Top 75 this weekend, although several albums will make sharp chart gains in and around the Top 20. These include RCA Label Group’s The Hoosiers whose debut album The Trick To Life is expected to move from its position of 11 on last Sunday’s chart into the Top 10, while Vertigo/Mercury’s Amy Macdonald is likely to climb into the Top 10 with This Is The Life from its present position of 18.

X Factor winner Leon Jackson is set for a third week at number one on the singles chart with When You Believe with the competition’s previous year‘s winner Leona Lewis the closest competitor currently with Bleeding Love. Both singles are released by Syco/Sony BMG with Sony BMG as a whole challenging for a clean sweep of the top three this coming Sunday with Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse with Valerie set to continue climbing back up the chart.

Roadrunner/Warner act Nickelback’s Rockstar is set to spend its 12th week on the chart by moving into the Top 10 from its current position of 15, while a number of 2007’s biggest hits are poised to make chart climbs this Sunday within the Top 40. These include the Mercury-issued Umbrella by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z, B Unique/Polydor’s Ruby by Kaiser Chiefs, Casablanca/Island’s Grace Kelly by Mika and Polydor act Take That with Shine.

Alll the long running songs coming back for more :(

Umbrella was #18 last week, do you think she could climb in the top 15.

And who the hell is still downloading that Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson dirge. :puke2:

I surpose its too early to ask where Girls Aloud are in singles chart
bland chart...I hope Take That beat Radiohead with their 14 month old album!

EWWW I hate Valerie and now that 'Rockstar' trash is climbing too. :(

What an awful start to the year.

Actually can i ask if St. Trinans by Girls Aloud has made an impact on the top 75 at all? When u get the info

Valerie is so awful I can't believe its still so high up. This is usually the worst time of the year tho (ironically at the beginning). The problem is that its usually good songs/albums that climb back up but this year.....hoosiers, valerie :puke2:

I hope the gap between leon and leona is small cos I want Leona back at number 1 now. Which is funny cos I couldn't wait to get rid of her a few weeks ago!

What a boring week. And the awful Nickelback going top10 :puke2:

Their only decent song!, glad it's doing well!!.

People wrote them off, Kerrang! slagged them off after what was thought of as their short-lived stint in the UK limelight, now look!!! :D :D.

Take That being sold for £4 or something?

Not sure but they did the ITV New Year's Eve concert live from the O2 which was massive publicity for them.

Yeah, and Sugababes in support.
Its hilarious how a song which was released in late October but finally reaches its peak in January
