I mean I was completely on her side with the GA/SG discussion Louis was talking some right tripe at that point, and I think most of the general public would have been. However when she started slating Westlife I thought what are you doing they are the biggest band in the country!? She didn't need to piss their fans off

Yeah it probably cost her a lot of support from the public AND the sector itself. BUT I am glad she stop up to her group when that nasty man was saying bullshit to big up his own acts.

And Mel's 'covers covers covers' will forever be iconic! She went straight to the balls on that one and she was RIGHT :cheer:

The problem here isnt Mel. The problem was Louis and the rancid UK press that always seem to have a bad take ready for any of the girls. If there was any justice in the world, that comment against Westlife wouldnt even be an issue, since it is nothing but the truth :teresa:

There were moments Mel criticized other artists during this time...that I didn't think she came off well.

But this appearance with Louis Walsh isn't one of those moments. Sorry. She was right this time. And some of the guys of Westlife (and their team) started the fight here during the chart battle with Forever. They were openly antagonistic about the girls and their album...threatening to move their own album release if the girls did. They even said at the time they wanted to go head to head with a single release too. So. As far as I'm concerned, Mel has the green light to be honest about Westlife.

Westlife never made a ripple here in America, so I can't weigh in much on the group. I will say I have to kinda respect any group that manages to have the longevity they did. However. It's honestly stunning how many cover songs they released.

And Louis? You know he lost the argument when he said something about the Spice Girls lacking personality. Yeah, okay, Louis.

I agree with you. Mel was right. However, the british press and public turned on her and the Spices throughout that period (well, from 1999 to about 2006 really), and thus, her career suffered as a result of that.

But yep, she was totally right AND in her right to say something specially after so much shit from Westlife and Louis over the years. And Louis being allowed anywhere near a camera should be made illigal to be honest. The man is an embarrassment and continuously lies to get noticed

For that moment anyway, he was roasted and Mel had the upper hand. Shame about the rest of the public though...

That old SpiceNews site reminded me of some of the things Westlife said about Spice Girls during their 2000 battle. Even afterwards, they were taking digs at them. This is from December 2000, a quote from one of the members (it doesn't say which one):

"There's a couple of decent tracks on it, Holler and Let Love Lead The Way are OK. And there's one other track called Oxygen but the rest of it is rubbish. They sold about seven copies of Forever in America. That says it all. All I said in the first place was that they aren't as popular as they used to be and then they started to slime us and said that we weren't big in America. Would we sing on a Spice Girls' TV Special? There'll never be one because they're not legends. But you have to give credit to the Spice Girls. At the end of the day they did put England and Ireland back on the map."

At least they had karma following that "seven copies of Forever in America" comment because like Piers says, Westlife were never able to break America despite some attempts. No doubt Forever sold more than anything Westlife released. I suppose I can understand why Spice Girls pointing out that Westlife weren't big in America might have riled them, but it was a fact!

"They're not legends" :deadbanana: I mean at the time it was too early for that word to be thrown around, and sadly it felt like everyone had such a downer on them at that point, that it felt like the Spice Girls might be tarnished forever (so ridiculous after they'd had a #1 single and a #2 album, anyone would have thought they'd missed the charts). Thankfully time has ended up being very kind to Spice Girls. Even though the 2007/8 reunion was very hyped and successful, I'd still pinpoint their Olympics 2012 performance as the moment it felt like the Spice Girls were truly recognised as being the iconic legendary group that they are.

Edit: Sorry, I've just realised this post totally takes us away from Melanie C specifically! She was 100% right in that CDUK appearance with Louis Walsh. I absolutely love Girls Aloud, but it was a step too far (in fact it was 100 steps too far tbh x) for Louis Walsh to state that they had more personality than Spice Girls / to say Spice Girls didn't have personality. That just made him look silly, because as Melanie rightly pointed out, you could never say that Spice Girls weren't full of personality.

Westlife were extremely obnoxious back then particularly the blonde members.

Its ironic how they sang Spice Girls songs on a recent tour. The day Spice Girls sing Westlife songs on tour will be when hell freezes over.

I didn't know about that! I had to look up the video on Youtube. Literally every time I've seen Westlife, they've been sitting on barstools. So. I look up the video. And sure enough. There they are. Singing Spice Up Your Life...sitting on those bar stools.

I remember that Westlife quote Jay mentioned. From what I recall, the members made that remark about Holler, Let Love Lead the Way, and Oxygen being the only decent songs from Forever more than once. I always found this to be a weirdly specific comment. If you can acknowledge those three are decent songs...can't you also recognize that *at least* Tell Me Why and If You Wanna Have Some Fun are about as good? Whatever. And that comment about the girls sliming them is delusional. Westlife 100% provoked the problems, and the girls never hit back as hard.

Like I said. My knowledge of Westlife is fairly limited. But. From what I've seen...uh...I don't think I get it. To me, the covers I've heard are strangely old fashioned for the early 2000s. I mean. Their cover of Mandy made it to #1? Not to offend people who are fans. But. Um. Do people just think they're that cute...or....?

Anyway. I'll just say this. The one good thing about Westlife for me is they did tend to bring out the best of Mel C. She could be negative about the group and the other girls' solo careers for several years...but as soon as Westlife got brought up, she was back on Team Spice.

Because Tell me why is naff :P

They must have listened to Forever enough to list an album track (at the end if the album) as a decent track.

I cant imagine any of the Spice Girls ever bothered to listen to Westlife's album, there is little point as you know what that album would sound like before it was released.

Westlife were so lame <_<

Like, in a way they are the polar opposite of what the Spice Girls represent, and I am fine with that. Boring ass music, no personality, just some throwaway good looks and thats it...

There's nothing throwaway about Nicky's good looks Phwoooooaarrr lol.

I actually met Westlife while I was working at MTV for the MTV news team. Met quite a few celebs actually Ellie Goulding, Alexandra Burke, 50 Cent, Jedward, Zac Efron (I shook his hand!! :w00t: ), Charlie from Busted and a few more I can't think of off the top of my head. When meeting Westlife I was like I get why they have lasted so long in the industry, they were the nicest of any of the celebrities I met. They were the only one's who went round everybody in the studio and shook all their hands thanking them for their time... also I couldn't believe how attractive Mark was in person I've never rated him but I really fancied him in person

But yeh music wise they have never been my thing bar a few good tracks... When you're looking like that is a cracker though

Apparently Melanie C is in talks to host a regular radio show on BBC Radio 2 after her DJ stint for the Scott Mills show. Would be a lucrative gig for her.
Cool. Might be a good move since live promo is always going to be reduced for a long time. So this will be a good way of keeping her out there.

No thanks, god these girls take some boring as hell stuff.

Spice Girls 2020, Geri writing a novel, Emma selling nappies, Mel C hosting a radio show, Mel B fading into obscurity. They could be the cast of Love Island 2019.

This is a great coup for her. She will be great !! Easy money for a relatively easy job . I am here for it !!

That would be such a good gig for her, she is such a natural talker as well and I think she would fit the Radio 2 audience well.

Welcome to the forum, Chemistry! :D

It would be fantastic for Melanie if she gets her own Radio 2 show.

I kind of wish she did a another look at her albums like she did on twitter with northern star. Also, I don't see why we can't get some unreleased or b-sides from spice girls. There is no way every song they didn't release is bad... I mean can we at least get feed your love..

Do we think we will honestly ever get anything else new from them tho?

Thank you <3
