Nice that he's mature enough to respect that you can still like people despite differences of opinion.

I agree with you. I think we all have friends we don’t agree with or family members. What I don’t agree with is this fear of calling out certain behaviors or point of views. As a fan, I have the right to say I don’t agree with her being a Tory And hanging out with those people. But I also have to be aware that it’s her life and she can do whatever she wants with that.

The news is out! I'm so excited to reveal what has been 7 years of hard work and passion...Rosie Frost And The Falcon Queen is scheduled for publication Fall 2023 🍂

Thankyou @scholastic_uk, @philomelbooks, @penguinbooks

Firstly “former Spice Girls star”?!

Secondly, congratulations to her for securing a UK and US book deal for this venture, that’s a pretty big deal.

I barely paid attention to her Ugenia Lavender books era. I was 20 at the time they were published and I didn’t feel the need to support her in terms of purchasing them. According to Wikipedia those books sold 250,000 copies in 5 months and made her 2008’s most successful female celebrity children’s author, which is pretty amazing, but only 6 books came out between May & October 2008. I wonder why she wasn’t motivated to continue on with that project? It was very short lived.

By the time the Rosie Frost books come out in Autumn 2023, it’ll be 15 years since Ugenia Lavender - a very long time coming for her to return to being a children’s author. According to her statement she’s been working on these new books for 7 years?? I wonder what the process of it has been like because that’s an awfully long time to go from the initial idea to announcing a publishing deal.

I’m curious about what the intended age range of her new books will be. Ugenia was aimed at 6-8 year olds. I wonder if Rosie Frost will aim a little older? I’m not getting the impression from the description that they’ll be aimed at anyone over 12 though, it doesn’t seem like a YA (young adult) sort of thing.

Anyway, good luck to her! But… if she’s going to do a promotional blitz for this in Autumn 2023, does that mean any proposed Spice activities will grind to a halt before that? <_< I can already tell that she’ll want to firmly put her “Author hat” on when it comes time to release these, I can’t see her wanting to be in Spice Girls mode at the same time…

-_- hot damn these girls and their obsession with boring side jobs that take their focus from group work.

Urgh...

I'm proud of Geri. Ugenia Lavender never interested me nor I expect will this but shes showcasing her sadly often overlooked talent as a writer.

I hope its a success and she gets good reviews.

Truly embarrssing. She should stop. She is no writer.

ZERO talent. Sorry! Only Sycophantic Spices say that.

Doesn’t interest me in the slightest but good for her. Interesting to see if she publishes under Halliwell orHorner

Wrong thread. :geri:

The books are aimed at 10 and above years old.

As others have said I have no interest in this and can imagine how painful she will come across in interviews promoting them trying to be J K Rowling.

Hopefully the timing of this announcement (a year before release and already up for pre-order with no cover) is because we are nearing an announcement for the tour and they wanted this out there before.

It's really not gone down well on twitter, yikes

I have to say, the synopsis is very all over the place! It comes across like a lot of concepts are being thrown at this book, but what is the core of this story?

We've got... a mysterious island which is a sanctuary for endangered species that "forces" are threatening, and she must win a game in order to save them... as well as her facing adversity from a bunch of mean teens and even an authority figure... as well as finding out a family secret.

I know a book shouldn't be judged based on a synopsis but I can kind of understand people making fun of it based on what we know so far. I'm also trying to think back to myself when I was a child and I'm wondering whether this synopsis on the back of a book would have made me want to read it. Not so sure, but obviously it's not me she needs to appeal to, it's today's children. We'll see.

^ oops, so I've heard about this release on a Facebook group I am part of with loads of teachers. Reading the comments on there and my own thoughts, I have to agree with you Jay. The synopsis seems like "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks". I can't even work out a plot, a genre, anything from it. A lot of the posters on the group I follow mocked it and could not take it seriously. They have also showed discontent at yet another celebrity cash-in author. Reading is such an important skill for young children and they should be exposed to high quality texts as much as possible from authors who specialise in writing children's fiction. We see so many examples of children picking the easier options of David Walliams etc when there is a plethora of really high quality texts available that are so much more enriching and beneficial. Not to say Geri can't achieve the standards of these writing greats around right now, but these authors have taken years and years to master their craft. Also so many setbacks and lack of exposure for books that are phenomenal. But I am sure, Geri's will get more exposure than any of those because of her name.

But yes, this is a lot for just a synopsis and I will hold judgement until the full release, but as someone who reads children's fiction all the time as part of my job, I can't say this is top of my reading list based on the synopsis alone.

I mean I am a teacher myself but actually I highly rate David Walliams books, they are funny, original and has good use of descriptive language. The reason why children prefer his books are because they are relevant to them far more than many of the classics which are set in eras they cannot understand or relate to in any way. Also, interestingly I have read a few classic books to my Year 4 class this year and the lack of descriptive language in them shocked me, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe especially.

I don't mean the classics! I mean modern masterpieces like Rooftoppers, The Boy at the Back of the Class, Highrise Mystery, The Explorer, Girl of Ink and Stars, The Last Bear, Orphans of the Tide, Children of the Quicksand etc. Highly rated and beloved by critics and children alike. Yes they naturally align most to Walliams, but is that because they are exposed to it due to his celebrity name whereas Katherine Rundell (the best children's author going right now imo) wouldn't get the same exposure from the media.

I don't read the classics, I go for the award winning modern fiction as awarded by Waterstones etc. The most relatable stories you can get!

All great books especially Girl of Ink and Stars I loved that!

Yesterday's Crumb and the storm in a teacup too give that one a read. ^_^

I am not disagreeing with your point I just think David Walliams is actually a great author and its unfair to say his success is purely due to his celebrity when his books are good too. The whole celebrity authors thing is certainly an issue but it can be applied to many kinds of job or business often its who you know not what you know.

I'm not one to defend Geri but what is a good or not children's book is subjective. A book publisher is there to sell books and make money and Geri is a name that will get bookings on The one show, This morning and so on to promote it and also has a built in fanbase that will buy the book too.

What I cant stand is the false persona Geri will no doubt use to promote this.

Or simply the persona she now has as a 50 year old woman.

Not necessarily false but an evolution she’s went through that you don’t like.
