Estelle and Kanye West have stayed at the top of an unchanged top two with American Boy for a third week. There are new entries in the top ten from The Kooks and Mariah Carey, who are both marking their comebacks this week

1. Estelle feat. Kanye West - American Boy (1)

Week number three in pole position for the British/US duet as soul singer Estelle and rapper Kanye West show that they have a major hit on their hands. It is the fourth chart topper in a row to spend at least three weeks in pole position following Leon Jackson and Basshunter and Duffy who both managed five weeks. Estelle’s second album Shine far outperforms its predecessor, debuting at No.6 this week. The album chart is topped by REM with their latest album Accelerate, which is seen to be a return to form for the American rock group. Estelle will be hoping for a fourth week in control next week, the main contenders for her throne will be Sam Sparro and Alex Turner fronted band The Last Shadow Puppets. Other acts physically releasing on Monday include Black Kids, Fragma, Natasha Bedingfield and Sean Kingston, Scouting For Girls and Soulja Boy.

2. Flo-Rida feat. T-Pain – Low (2)

American rapper Flo-Rida continues the run of long running No.2 singles this week as the infectious Low, a song which has sold over three million copies in the US and had a ten week stint at No.1, stays put in the runners up spot. It has been on the top 40 now for eight weeks and has still never fallen, climbing gradually each week from No.40 to No.2 and now staying put. Its sales look to have remained fairly stable, a huge factor undoubtedly being the song’s inclusion on the soundtrack to the hit film Step Up 2 The Streets. Rapper T-Pain has collaborated with a number of people in the last few years, this being the biggest success, though perhaps his oddest collaboration is on Moon Of Dreams, the new single by Ukrainian former Eurovision Song Contest winner Ruslana.

3. The Kooks - Always Where I Need To Be (71)

British indie band The Kooks first had chart success in 2005 with Eddie’s Gun and Sofa Song, but it was with the release of their debut album Inside In Inside Out, which has now sold over a million copies in the UK, that they really became huge. Naïve and She Moves In Her Own Way were both top ten hits in 2006 and absolutely huge airplay hits, both still being played quite regularly today. Always Where I Need To Be, the first single from their new album Konk, doesn’t stray too much from the original formula and leaps from No.71 last week, where it entered after a couple of days worth of download sales, to No.3 this week to give them their biggest hit.

4. Sam Sparro - Black & Gold (4)

It’s a third week on the countdown for Australian born singer Sam Sparro. Sam, who is now based in America, soared from No.23 to No.4 last week but stays put this week for a second week in fourth position. His download sales appear to be slowly sliding so perhaps the physical release of the single, on Monday, can finally lift the song into the top three in a week’s time. We will have to wait and see…

5. Duffy – Mercy (3)

Welsh singer Duffy is down a spot to No.2 in the album chart this week with the year’s biggest seller Rockferry, and the single Mercy slides a couple of places to No.5. It is of course two months since this single was released, and this week marks its eighth week in the UK top five, the first five of which were of course at No.1. Her next single Warwick Avenue is due for release on May 26th and she will also be hoping to follow the success of Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis in the coming months as she attempts ‘to crack America’.

6. Mariah Carey – Touch My Body (99)

US superstar Mariah Carey gets a new entry to the top 75 this week with her comeback single Touch My Body. The R&B/pop song was actually at No.99 last week following a days worth of download sales but after a full week of download sales, physical sales and promotion (on Paul O’Grady and The Friday Night Project amongst other things), the first single from her new album E=MC2, which is out on Monday 14th April, bounces into the top ten at No.6 to give the singer her first UK new UK top ten single since 2005’s No.9 hit Get Your Number/Shake It Off, though she did of course reach No.4 last December with the Christmas classic All I Want For Christmas Is You. Her biggest UK hit remains the 1994 classic No.1 hit Without You.

7. Leona Lewis - Better In Time/Footprints In The Sand (6)

Perhaps the closest comparative singer to Mariah in the world at the moment is fellow powerhouse vocalist Leona Lewis, the winner of 2006’s X Factor. The double a-side charity single and former No.2 single is still doing well on its 4th week inside the top ten dropping just a place this week. Leona’s debut album Spirit climbs back up a place to No.3 in the UK this week and is expected to be huge in America when released shortly to follow up the No.1 success of Bleeding Love, though that single topples to No.4 in the US this week.

8. Madonna feat Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes (5)

The comeback single from Madonna’s new album Hard Candy is down three places to No.8 this week and still not yet released physically for another couple of weeks. However, I expect that this is just a temporary blip in the chart run of this song which has so far moved 7-5-8 as the music video has only in the last couple of days had its premiere. Whether it can be a future No.1 single for Madonna remains to be seen, but the single, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake and the uncredited Timbaland, definitely looks to have the power to hang around for quite a few more weeks.

9. Chris Brown - With You (8)

After many people feared that this might not reach the top ten last week, Chris Brown proves any doubters wrong this week by spending a second week inside the top ten, albeit down a place, with the ballad With You. The song, which has peaked at No.2 in the US, is similar in sound to Beyonce’s 2006 hit Irreplaceable, due to the same producers being used, and as mentioned last week, is Chris’ second top ten hit in the UK. Hopefully No Air, his duet with American Idol Season 7 winner Jordin Sparks (whose own debut single Tattoo enters at No.51 this week) can be his third UK top ten hit if it ever gets a proper UK release.

10. Nickelback Rockstar (7)

And finally in the top ten is the song that refuses to go away. Canadian rock group Nickelback’s 2005 album track Rockstar was given a new lease of life last year with a memorable video featuring a number of celebrities miming to the track. Though the song started slowly in the UK, and looked to have peaked at No.19 just before Christmas, it has been unstoppable in 2008 and has been in the top ten every week so far this year. This looks like it could be the last week inside the UK top ten though for a song which in the coming months should outsell How You Remind Me to become their biggest UK hit single. It has of course done their previous flop album All The Right Reasons no harm either, and that album, a former No.2 like the single, is back up to No.4 in the album chart this week.

Other notable movers and shakers in the top 40:

16. Usher feat. Young Jeezy Love In This Club (19)

On its second week in the chart, the former US No.1 single for Usher, who has topped the UK charts three times in his career, climbs three places, and still without an official video or notable airplay success, it could do considerably better in the coming weeks. The song stays at No.2 in America held off by Mariah Carey’s Touch My Body but ahead of Madonna’s 4 Minutes thanks to its huge airplay success across the pond.

19. The Courteeners Not Nineteen Forever (NEW)

The new single from the British indie band. Released simultaneously on physical and download formats it beats the peak of their January single What Took You So Long by one place.

21. Radiohead Nude (NEW)

The second single to be taken from In Rainbows. That album was of course part of a revolutionary experiment to see how much people would be willing to pay for it if put up for download before physical release. Continuing their musical experiments, the British indie band made their new single available in a number of different versions to enable fans to produce their own remixes of the song. The experiment has lifted them to a rather unexpected No.21 and eclipses the success of the album’s first single Jigsaw Falling Into Place which peaked at No.30 earlier in the year.

25. Britney Spears Break The Ice (36)

The third single from Britney’s current album Blackout continues to move in the right direction as it climbs eleven places from No.36 last week, thus overtaking the former single Piece Of Me, which remains in the top 40 once again and duly becomes her longest serving hit since her 1999 debuts single …Baby One More Time. Britney is looking to get her career back on track with her successful cameo appearance on the US sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’ thought to be the first step on the road to recovery.

27. Scouting For Girls Heartbeat (40)

Not exactly changing their successful formula, British indie-pop trio are also moving upwards this week from No.40 last week. Heartbeat is the fourth single to be lifted from their former No.1 self titled debut album which is back up seven places to No.13 this week. Their other top 40 hits were It’s Not About You EP (#31), She’s So Lovely (#7) and Elvis Ain’t Dead (#8). This is physically released on Monday and will be inside the top twenty this time next week.

29. Fragma Toca's Miracle 2008 (NEW)

German dance act Fragma score their sixth UK top forty hit this week over six years since Say That You’re Here debuted and peaked at No.25. They have still been releasing music in Germany though and get a revival in the UK thanks to a new remix of Toca’s Miracle. The track which mashed together Coco’s 1997 No.39 hit I Need A Miracle with Fragma’s own 1999 No.11 hit Toca Me was released in 2000 and was at No.1 for two weeks, an impressive run in a year which saw 42 different chart toppers. The single originally sold over half a million copies and this remix, which is physically released on Monday, should see Fragma back in the top twenty next week.

Like the new layout, looks good! Always enjoy your commentary too, thanks :)
I'm going to be a bit fuddy duddy, I prefer the old layout for some reason, or add a little overview at the end for your predictions of how the chart might look the following week.
I love the new layout, and it has added detail on actual songs, but apart from the predictions for contenders next week, there seems to be a bit of a lack of general chart info and trivia, but now more focused on the actual songs. But on the whole it seems to be better :D

I wouldn't describe this week's top 10 as being 'unchanged', considering that Kooks and Mariah have both entered.

I prefer this layout BTW.

I did try to add my No.1 prediction in the bit about Estelle, but if other people agree, I will make a little section at the end for an overview like you suggest Martin :D

Cheers Harve...

I will still give trivia about the top ten songs and new entries...and on other occasions about long runners or something...but it seems pointless to comment on practically every song in the chart when only the top ten, climbers and non-movers are worth talking about

no you're right  I meant to put the top two was unchanged, and I've edited that in the summary at the top! I was rather tired when I wrote it last night

glad you like the layout Paul!

What do people think of this revised report taking into account some of the comments? I've moved the next week's chart bit to the bottom and made it a bit more substantial.

The song stays at No.2 in America held off by Mariah Careys Touch My Body but ahead of Madonnas 4 Minutes thanks to its huge airplay success across the pond.

Britney is looking to get her career back on track with her successful cameo appearance on the US sitcom How I Met Your Mother thought to be the first step on the road to recovery.

Their other top 40 hits were Its Not About You EP (#31), Shes So Lovely (#7) and Elvis Aint Dead (#8). This is physically released on Monday and will be inside the top twenty this time next week.

29. Fragma Toca's Miracle 2008 (NEW)

German dance act Fragma score their sixth UK top forty hit this week over six years since Say That Youre Here debuted and peaked at No.25. They have still been releasing music in Germany though and get a revival in the UK thanks to a new remix of Tocas Miracle. The track which mashed together Cocos 1997 No.39 hit I Need A Miracle with Fragmas own 1999 No.11 hit Toca Me was released in 2000 and was at No.1 for two weeks, an impressive run in a year which saw 42 different chart toppers. The single originally sold over half a million copies and this remix, which is physically released on Monday, should see Fragma back in the top twenty next week.

Next weeks chart

Estelle and Kanye West will be hoping for a fourth week in control next week while Flo Rida and The Kooks will be hoping to gain in momentum and improve on their current positions in the top three. The main contenders for her throne will be Sam Sparro and Alex Turner fronted band The Last Shadow Puppets who both release their long awaited singles on physical formats. Other acts physically releasing on Monday who can expect top 40 hits are Black Kids, Fragma, Elliot Minor, Natasha Bedingfield and Sean Kingston and Scouting For Girls while Soulja Boy's Yahhh!, the follow up to the massive Crank That, will be lucky to reach the top 40 judging by its current download sales. REM will be looking for a second week at No.1 in the album chart with Accelerate and with the only significant album release due to be from The Courteeners, it looks as if Duffy will once again be their strongest competition for the throne this time next week.

Great commentary Rich ^_^
