Chart Commentary

The Bangles started a run-of 4 weeks at the top of the chart with Eternal Flame.

Simply Red made a 17 place climb from 19 to 2 with If You Don’t Know Me By

Now taken from their A New Flame album.

The song didn’t climb any higher and made it three weeks in the runner-up slot.

Coldcut peaked at No.11 with People Hold On which was their become their last

Top 40 hit, but they did kick Lisa Stansfield’s career off, she would hit the

No.1 position later this year with All Around The World.

Then Jericho’s hit at 34 ‘What Does It Take’ also featured the vocals of Belinda

Carlisle. The song would peak a week later at no.33.

Barry Manilow entered at No.40 with Please Don’t Be Scared, the song would peak

At No.35 the following week.

The next time he charted was in 1993 with remixes of Copacabana (No.22), and

Could It Be Magic (No.36).

there's some decent songs in there:

Eternal Flame

Like A Prayer

This Time I Know It's For Real

Keep On Movin'

People Hold On

International Rescue

Fire Woman

Musical Freedom

Beds Are Burning

but there's also some pure dross...

If You Don't Know Me By Now

Too Many Broken Hearts

Americanos (one of the most irritating songs of the 80s)

I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet

Please Don't Be Scared (to which Alan Jones, in his then weekly column for Record Mirror stated that Barry Manilow was making a wholly unreasonable request!)

the other songs in the chart were various shades of average...

Too Many Broken Hearts

Americanos (one of the most irritating songs of the 80s)

^ Noooo! I loved those when I was a kid

Dale counted down this chart on Pick Of The Pops today on Radio 2. You can hear it for the next 7 days on the Listen Again facility on the Raio 2 website.

The week ending date of this chart - 15th April 1989 - was also the day of the Hillsborough disaster. A great chart, but those songs also remind of me that too. (EDITS: As Robbie also mentions in the MRIB thread too)
