Posted April 22, 200817 yr 07:54 GMT, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 08:54 UK Father fined for overfilling bin BBC News http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44589000/jpg/_44589172_bins226.jpg Councils are clamping down on overfilled bins A father-of-four has been left with a criminal record for overfilling his wheelie bin by four inches. Gareth Corkhill, 26, of Whitehaven, Cumbria, received a £110 fixed penalty notice after Copeland Council staff photographed his raised bin lid. When he refused to pay he was taken to court where magistrates added a further £115 to the fixed penalty. Copeland Council has defended its actions and pledged to continue to take action against overfilled wheelie bins. Mr Corkhill, said: "First I heard of it was from a neighbour who said someone had taken a picture of my wheelie bin, but I thought nothing of it. Fortnightly collections "Two days later two enforcement officers turn up on my doorstep wearing stab vests, read my rights and then issued me with an on-the-spot fine. "I recycle and all my boxes are always full." Mr Corkhill, who shares a house with his partner and three children and also has a child from a previous relationship, said the authority recently switched from weekly to fortnightly refuse collections, but added that the supplied bins were not big enough to cope. He added: "I could not believe I had been fined for putting rubbish in a bin. "I tell my kids not to throw rubbish away and always use a bin." Whitehaven magistrates convicted Mr Corkhill in his absence of overfilling a receptacle used for waste. In a statement the council said: "Copeland Borough Council will continue to crack down on the problem of overflowing bins, which cause problems for local residents and in the battle to reduce waste. "It is important that we all reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. "We can do this by recycling more of what is in our bins, and we would advise anyone who has a problem with too much waste to look at what can be recycled." Do you agree with the criminalisation of a human being over an overfilled bin or is this bureaucracy gone mad?
April 23, 200817 yr ridiculous.... 4'' ffs... its would have cost less just to empty it, its a waste of public money.
April 23, 200817 yr  This is just a joke. I watched this in the news last night. 4 inches. The geezers got a wheelie bin to start with which is good. He's not throwing his rubbish directly onto the street so what's he done wrong. This is just another case of Councils trying to screw money out of the general public. :arrr:
April 23, 200817 yr what do they expect when they only collect rubbish fortnightly <_< The nanny state gone absolutely stark raving mad
April 23, 200817 yr what do they expect when they only collect rubbish fortnightly <_< that's a red herring.. we've been on fortnightly... (well actually it ISNT fortnightly, its weekly... domestic rubbish one week, recyclables the next.... when it was weekly nothing was recycled.... same rubbish but sorted differently).... for years and there's no problem at all, its a bloody good idea and recycling in a necessity.
April 23, 200817 yr It's cost the council more i bet to take him to court in the first place. How ridiculous can they be. What is this world coming to? Around where i live, we haven't got wheelie bins and the binmen take as many black bags as you put out.If it be 2 or 22, doesn't matter. How Bizzarre!
April 23, 200817 yr Ridiculous when they're only collecting every fortnight. What do they expect? Clearly didn't read Rob's post. Absolutely nowt wrong with fortnightly collections, had them where I live for years now, only time you ever get any kind of problem is at Christmas when people do get a bit more rubbish. Fuss over absolutely nothing! Edited April 23, 200817 yr by RabbitFurCoat
April 23, 200817 yr Clearly didn't read Rob's post. Absolutely nowt wrong with fortnightly collections, had them where I live for years now, only time you ever get any kind of problem is at Christmas when people do get a bit more rubbish. Fuss over absolutely nothing! true...but there was ALWAYS a problem at crimbo as they had the ordacity to have time off work!
April 24, 200817 yr they were on about this on breakfast tv... interviewed a bloke "theres no problem with fortnightly collections if you re-cycle properly" .... couldnt agree more! only the labour candidates in the forthcoming local elections want to keep things like this, tory and libs promise to return to weekly.... barmy! weekly to remove a fortnights worth of rubbish! and who do these people think will be PAYING for this?... AS IF theyll get that service without a huge price hike in their council tax.
April 24, 200817 yr fortnightly works where we are, and has done for years sounded like a fife council thing tbh 4" how stupid
April 29, 200817 yr Beyond stupid..... But, doesn't surprise me... Local Councils are basically fukkin' over anyone they can these days to raise funds for their coffers, the easier the target the better... If they came down like a ton of bricks on these bloody verminous fly-tippers, I;d be totally with them, but this is just unnacceptable.... The issue regarding weekly/fortnightly collections I think is salient.... In Spain, they actually do daily rubbish collections believe it or not.... But then, I do believe that the rubbish collection services in Spain are actually 100%State controlled.....
April 29, 200817 yr Wow....and photographing it to get proof is kinda sad.... But there has always been weird laws, I think there's a law in Texas saying it's illegal to put a skunk in your bosses desk.
