Posted August 4, 200816 yr Radio 1 entertainment news was talking to Dizzee Rascal and he said he was the first independent number for 14 years what was the last independent number one. By this I mean independent label
August 4, 200816 yr That's absolute rubbish - Adele's 'Chasing Pavements' was an indie number one from earlier this year on XL. 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' by Arctic Monkeys before that on Domino. Quite a few others...what about all those Oasis number ones in the mid-90s? Did they mean self-financed, self-released as I think Dizzee set up his own label didn't he?

August 4, 200816 yr I think they mean they're OWN Independant labels set up by the artist/band themselves. ;)
August 5, 200816 yr Didn't Adele reach number one? Ah well, praise small mercies - it was number one in the album charts though eh? Anyway, yeah, I guessed that's what they meant...but I wouldn't be surprised if Dizzee has a lot of his old XL team working with him.
August 17, 200816 yr Ding ding! The Crazy Frog was indie. But I'm guessin he had some non-amphibious friends to actually run the label.
August 17, 200816 yr Yeah Arctic Monkeys are definitely on an independant label so he's wrong. The point is that Dizzee Rascal released Dance Wiv Me on his OWN label, which HE set up, like Stiltskin in 1994. The Arctic Monkeys were SIGNED to Domino, although a small label hardly INDEPENDENT…
August 18, 200816 yr Well then, why not go and tell Laurence Bell to his face that he's been running a major label for the past couple of decades? That remortgaging his house to keep it going while trying to make ends meet by licencing unpopular American rock bands was just the kind of thing that the owner of EMI has to do... Independent labels are just that and they've been called that for a long time. Anyone disagreeing is being highly disrespectful to Domino who are one of the music business' true recent successes. Hard slog and an ear for music and not business has seen them rise to be able to claim number ones. I doubt Dizzee would have managed to get to number one without some backing anyway...did he set up the pressing, distribution, promotion etc. all by himself? Did he f***...

Yeah it was about own artist labels...tho Domino, even tho yeah a independent are going towards being more of minor-major than a weekend hobby... tho probably will end up being taken over by the Beggars group at some point  http://www.zipdj.com/upload/label/200703211611571190916417_chrysalis.jpg and look here's a Chrysalis Records logo and a feeder album that hardly nobody bought... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Silent_Cry.jpg me thinks they might have to sell out to EMI (again  )

August 31, 200816 yr They didn't 'sell out' to EMI, they knew that label have an impressive track record of promoting and releasing compilations, with a decent sales record in response to the promotion. Because of EMI's promotion and distribution, they paid 50 grand per slot for a TV advert, which helped the album become Feeder's most sucsessful and first one to have a consistently strong chart run. "Silent Cry" did very well to chart at number eight with zero airplay and publicity, the only magazine feature before the albums release was Grant in 'Total Guitar' magazine in a guitar shop. The album only has not reached the silver certification mark because Echo are in serious financial difficulty (despite "The Singles" making a 2 million profit), and spent very little money on promotion and marketing as a result, EMI should have been involved again methinks. I bet very little people on here knew they have new single out, and it's only a download with no CD single due to Echo's money problems. The album faced many delays after recording wrapped in November 2007, a friend of mine spoke to Mark Richardson (drummer), and sounded very frustrated at the situation as Echo was up for sale at the time, but the sale fell through (Echo rejected EMI's offer). If that sale happened, who knows what would have happened to this album :(. Anyhow the future is going to be bright again, Universal/Mercury have approached their management about a 3 album deal!!.

If that sale happened, who knows what would have happened to this album :(. So i see you havent read all of the 40 years of Chrysalis tribute to feature in music week this week? How they started off with a label deal with Island Record who would give them (Chris Wright/Terry Ellis) their own label if they provided Island with so many hits in so many months...how they had loads of success with Procol Harum, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull and Blondie...how Simon Fuller (ex-Chrysalis) could have not wished for a better apprenticeship, how they sold out to EMI in the early 1990s and concentrated on radio, television and publishing until an agreed lock-out period from running a record label meant that they could set up Echo... i dont think anybody reading that tribute would get the idea that they are really such a poor little down on their luck enterty (they're not Gut  )...more like ultra corporate back-slapping...and the truth is the publishing side is much more profitable than echo will ever be....on the other hand seeing as EMI own most of Chrysalis back cat...they can re-issue the Waterboys and Spandu Ballet as many times as they like now....in as many 2 disc and sight&sound dvd editions as they like.... vL5L5Y61Jyk A Girl Called Johnny - The Waterboys http://www.dararecords.com/irish_music_store/info/images/waterboys_roomtoroam_160.jpg http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetail...&sku=832713 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZhbtltIpL._SL500_AA280_.jpg http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetail...&sku=842753
