He was on GMTV at 8.20 talking and then sang it.

Better late than never I suppose. Hopefully the campaign won't be too frontloaded then.

I'm sure there's more he could be doing though. I wonder if he's thought of floating a statue of himself down the Thames?

That's cos most of his fans probably don't even know what the Internet is. They also think email is what a Yorkshireman says when he gets post.

Pop star Sir Cliff Richard has said he will never be a fan of downloaded music because the quality "is not the same" as the "unbeatable" sound from CDs.

"I like putting six CDs in the machine and playing them for two or three days," the 67-year-old said.

"The 12" vinyl album was the best because you could read [the sleeve] without getting a magnifying glass."

Sir Cliff said "it would be nice" if he topped the chart this weekend - giving him number ones across six decades.

His single, Thank You For a Lifetime, is at number three on the provisional midweek sales chart, with Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl remaining the UK's top-seller.

I like the human aspect of music. It's all getting a little bit too technical now, too easy; you don't do anything now

Sir Cliff Richard

Asked if he was confident of reaching first place by Sunday, he replied: "I can't say I'm confident because how can you be confident about anything any more?

"It'd be nice to be number one but nobody's going to catch me now.

"I've had number ones in five decades. Who's going to do that?

"First of all, they've got to be around for five decades. Many of them barely make five years."

'No million-sellers'

However, being number one in 2008 "did not have the same cachet" as topping the chart at the start of his career, admitted Sir Cliff, whose first number one was Living Doll in 1959.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been number one for five weeks with I Kissed a Girl

"In those days, when you released a single, it was potentially a million-seller. That's completely out of the question now, because people just don't buy singles.

"I suppose it's feasible they might have a million downloads, but as for me, I'm never going to go to downloads."

It was "very hard to beat" a CD, Sir Cliff told the BBC News website.

Although there are good points to downloads he speaks a lot of sense from a music lover's point of view but sadly none of us can stand in the way of progress!

LMAO at your last sentence. :P

I enjoy Cliffs music from his solo material to that with The Shadows & The Drifters

The Drifters was The Shadows original name. They changed it to avoid confusion with the US Soul group who had the name first.

I agree with him  He speaks a lot of sense, just a shame he sings a load of $h!te :P

I am almost tempted to download this! At least he seems to care about the singles market and I guess it would be good to see him get the #1 he clearly so desperately wants.

Up to #50 on iTunes now. I think that's quite impressive. And he's ahead of Pussycat Dolls in the mids.

"Not a hope," "no chance"... of being #1 were some of the comments on here and Haven. He's not that far off though, is he?

I learnt a long time ago never to underestimate Cliff

he has a huge fanbase and can still pull out top 5 hits when he wants them, all he has to do is appear on a few TV shows and it's another big hit for him, and all credit to him

really going for it this time, he was just on the lottery show singing.

I dont know why he doesnt do a charity record and get it stocked in tesco's like katie melua did, he'd easily get a number 1.

Far enough :P

Will be interesting to see what the chart run of this single will be - Would not be totally suprised if it was not in the Top 40 next week!

He seems to have chart runs that could rival McFly!

Somethin' Is Goin' On: 9-27-50

What Car: 12-29-52

21st Century Christmas/Move It: 2-7-43

lol re the chart run comment. It's coz most of his records these days are cash ins or PR stunts only fervently bought by the most loyal fans (well those that are still alive anyway) usually on week 1! Not that i'm generalising! Don't think he's a write off for number one yet, though unlikely

Indeed! Although he is behind it is still possible for him to catch up and I think he will get huge sales of the CD over the weekend!

I'd say he will manage to overtake Katy Perry, but Kings of Leon are really picking up the pace.
