Well, I didn't know this was happening

Tori Amos will re-release her debut and sophomore albums-- 1992's Little Earthquakes and 1994's Under The Pink-- on April 14 via Rhino. The 2-CD deluxe editions will feature live tracks, B-sides, covers, and other rarities, including a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It's also the first time 180-gram vinyl of the original albums will be released in the United States.

I've been meaning to give her first couple of albums a listen. Should I bother with the b-sides?

Honey and Sugar are up their with her very best work, in my opinion.

But if you're only investigating then you're probably best off juts listening to the albums.

Start with Little Earthquakes - the Silent All these Years/Precious Things/Winter triplet sequence is hard to beat.

Thanks!

Most of the cover versions she did for these albums' b-sides are not appearing on the re-issues. Only Smells Like Teen Spirit will. It's quite an incomplete exercise. I'm not even sure if I will bother now. There better be an amazing booklet.

I purchased the Under the Pink re-issue on vinyl this morning. 21 years old and it's still as sharp as ever.

This reissue has really sparked my interest in Under The Pink all over again (it hasn't achieved the same impact with Little Earthquakes tho') and I'm enjoying it just as much, if not more than, the first time around. The thing I love about the digital approach to music is that you can right the slight imperfections from tracklists of albums from years ago and here I can finally remove The Waitress (which is okay but never amazing for me) and include both Honey and Black Swan.

Pretty Good Year // God // Bells For Her // Past The Mission // Baker Baker // The Wrong Band // Honey // Cornflake Girl // Icicle // Cloud On My Tongue // Space Dog // Yes, Anastasia // Black Swan

Just noticed this... Tori has some truly great b-sides in my opinion... if you're not already familiar with them, this is my preferred b-sides album:

Never Seen Blue

Take Me With You

Cooling

Honey

Bachelorette

Purple People

Take To The Sky

Hey Jupiter (Dakota Version)

Sugar

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Here. In My Head

Flying Dutchman

Black Swan

I'd add Song for Eric and Over It to that list.

Plus Carnival and Siren from her soundtrack work.

Despite no songs on UTP affecting me emotionally as much as Winter or China I have preferred UTP to it for well over 20 years. It's an album that reminds me of a certain time and place. It took a while to grow on me but when it did it hasn't let go. From GFG to the end of Yes Anastasia is full of career highlights for me.

I have completely fallen for the opening track on Native Invader

It takes a few listens. I nearly cried today while listening to it. Her best song since Scarlet's Walk.

Yes she is good I think, my dad had the greatest hits of hers which he played a while back and she has a nice voice and the piano is excellent!
He voice became a lot smoother in the 00s. Now she has a habit of multitracking her vocals and using the upper registers and that can be too much for me, sometimes.

I'm enjoying her new album a lot - very restrained Kate Bush. Have liked some tracks from her previous albums too and recently included her in my disc for Buzzjack CD Swap, with a fairly obscure track.

Spotify has definitely helped me get into her. I don't think I like/know that many of her big/classic songs.

i was the biggest fan, seen her live maybe 50 times ;)

Her first 4 albums are all classics, every frikkin song lyric was genious

after a while song quality dropped a bit

and then sadly she totally lost it in the late 00s with the American doll posse/Abnormally attracted albums

but now she seems to be recovering, her previous album was excellent and the new one is pretty similar, agree Reindeer King is amazing!

I have a CD of Abnormally Attracted To Sin, which I remember buying from a Metropolis shop in a Greek airport, which has now closed down (edit: the shop closed down, not the airport).

Haven't really listened to it though. I need to.

I like Pretty Good Year and the Armand Van Helden remix of Professional Widow

I finally picked up American Doll Posse after 14 years (!) since I remembered liking Big Wheel and I meant to pick it up and then something distracted me. Like a shiny object or something.

Either way... it's not too bad, not sure where I'd place this in her discography but holy shit it just never ends on the other hand does it? Tori, there was no need to put 23 tracks on there!!! I feel like doing such a long album makes it hard to motivate yourself to listen through it again to pick out the gems.

I’ve recently ordered her new album - I haven’t bought one in a while but I have faith in this one for some reason!

I haven’t listened to American Doll Posse for a very long time but there was definitely a good album hidden in there

Yeah, I mean, if you cut it down from 23 (!) to 12 tracks I'm sure it would be a much better album. It just goes to show you that more is not always better. I would've at least divided it up on two discs because listening to the entire thing felt like a slog and I quite liked a few tracks towards the end.
