Posted September 30, 200816 yr I really dont get excited by music videos anymore. Most of them nowadays look cheap, and you can tell that artists just arent spending that much money on them anymore. Perhaps its cos music channels like MTV arent really playing many nowadays, hence its not a big promotion for artists anymore. Perhaps this is a reason why? I just miss those great music videos that really popped out, that were interesting, that you could actually tell were expensive, or that they had a lot of thought behind them. Anyone agree?
September 30, 200816 yr I've seen some that are quite good but when they're $h!t they really are $h!t!

Definitely not the case they aren't getting played - there are more music video channels than ever, though each cannot individually contrbute as much promo as a single TOTP airing did at its peak. Nowadays, it's exposure on popular TV shows and in adverts that gives some of the best publicity - one play on X-Factor is worth more than weeks of radio airplay (unfortunately)...

I agree with you completely! Music channels nowadays are really NOT music channeles anymore. They just show some stupid, brainless reality or celeb shows. Where are those classic music shows, European charts, new releases programmes, Party Zone etc. I don't really understand why they've changed so dramatically from music too cheap shows that are only watched by teenagers. VH1 is the only good programme I can watch but there are just a few new songs.
September 30, 200816 yr I agree, but why waste money when it's not going to be recouped by music sales? when the technology was new, people played around with it and a lot of groundbreaking videos were produced, now the novelty has worn off they are just promotional tools for people to hear the songs

September 30, 200816 yr They aren't especially needed to be great anymore, lately you don't seem to even need one.
September 30, 200816 yr Will Young makes great videos. They may not be to everyone's taste but they always have plenty of talking points. I do agree generally though that many artist's are lazy & turn out predictable boring videos. I suppose they don't have much value today in terms of sales & are more down to whether the artist is interested in creating something of note. Edited September 30, 200816 yr by truly talented
September 30, 200816 yr I tend to agree, the only good videos I can think of from this year are Piece Of Me, Disturbia, When I Grow Up, Outta My Head, Bad Girl, Forgive Me, 4 Minutes and So What. Strange that they're all [with the exception of Leona] by American artists ...
September 30, 200816 yr I think it depends where you look tbh and what you define as a 'good video'. Spending a lot on a music video often (imo) makes it look, over-budgeted, tacky and generally no depth at all. Justin Timberlake's (fairly) recent 'What Goes Around...Comes Around' had a budget in excess of $1,000,000 yet it was a trite and horridly dull video. It's the economics and logistics of the music industry I'd have thought which prevent music videos having much spent on them. With the credit crunch of recent times coupled with falling revenue from album and single sales record labels are no longer willing to spend copious amounts of cash on this promotional tool. Labels will cut costs at all corners now to make some sort of profit and music videos definately suffer from this. Furthermore there seems to be a general age incontinence within the music industry so to speak. A lot of old men making decisions who are very out of touch with what people want and expect from a music video. Also to return to the point about good music videos. Excellent videos tend to come from little label 'indie' bands (alternative too) where little budgets exist but with big thoughts and ideas behind the videos produced. I could give you hundreds of examples of excellent videos over the last year! To these acts music and videos are intertwined ART hence the passion used when projecting music through the medium of art: video. Major labels don't have the same vision through what they do and completely different ideals and objectives through the work they do. Also the whole idea of art/video/music amalgamating is one that should continue to grow and appeal to the masses over the next 20 years with the continue middle-classing so to speak of the UK and other 'Westernised' nations. The creative music idea is an idea which definately appeals/interests this growing strata of society. Greater education + more money = more time to explore/take interest in this avenue... Video is AS if not MORE relevant than it was when it first started back in the 1970s. It's just the way we VIEW it which has changed. The Music Channels are slowly but surely losing their market share thanks to the rise of on demand music. People choosing what they want to watch when they want to watch it. Streaming sites such as Youtube and Dailymotion and even Myspace to a certain extent all cater for this. Just look at videos by CSS and Avril on Youtube, in excess of 100,000,000 views. Certainly interest in the videos. Also, you can tell the difference a video makes by the release of them and the then difference in sales of a song on iTunes. This is especially true in the USA where downloads are often released before the music video. Some songs have risen from top 20 to top 5 thanks to release of the songs video. Some songs too, which have failed on radio in the US have done well thanks to strong video rotation. Lil' Mama's 'Shawty Get Loose' springs to mind as an example of that... Music video channels aren't dying out because of the switch to reality tv etc either, rather adapting to survive. As aforementioned people no longer watch video channels as they have no real safe over what is played. MTV are adapting by selecting programme's which enticed their core teenage video-viewing audience and reality/bratty TV would seem to be that.

The "Shut Up & Let Me Go" is the best vide this year for me   Great Choice!

September 30, 200816 yr I think Girls Alouds new one is good! Well it has Girls Aloud in it... :naughty:
September 30, 200816 yr Music Channels are ridiculous! They play what, 40 minutes of music video's a day? And then the rest is either countdowns, or shows, or the Top Official UK Chart or the Top Official UK RnB Chart, EVERDAY... Who cares? I don't!
September 30, 200816 yr There are only a handful of videos that have made a lasting impression on me this year. Madonnas 4 Minutes, Pinks So What and Will Youngs Changes. A few more have been pretty good (Disturbia is quite good) but the majority are just cheap and boring. Madonna needs to realise, regarding 'Give it 2 Me', that wearing a hat and dancing in front of a camera for 4 minutes does not a good video make. Same for Sugababes, Girls is a bit poo to start with, but the music video is even worse! Edited September 30, 200816 yr by Glyn

September 30, 200816 yr Lesser known bands DO make great videos still - the best music video of the past couple of years for me was Ok Go - Here It Goes Again whereby the video is now more famous than the song!
