The singles market is up the sh!tter and has been since the mid-80s, singles don't make any money(in fact, they probably make a loss if anything for the most part when you take into account marketing, production and promotion costs, and the costs of shooting a video), they only serve a purpose now to sell or boost the sales of an album or to sell Tour tickets (which is where artists DO actually make money...). You could release tracks on MySpace or Bebo, people could download it for nowt, put the video on YouTube (another incredibly effective marketing tool to sell albums...), and it wouldn't make much overall difference...

Instead, she has had two huge hits to her name, generating more media attention (I see her in the papers everyday for some reason or another) and constantly bringing 'the Katy Perry brand' to a wider audience... let's imagine if Rihanna had chosen to come back in 2006 with We Ride instead of SOS...that would have been the end of her career
