Right, we have decided to enter the Absolute Radio: Rock Off and enter Coldplay as our entry. basically, we need discuss and pick our ultimate Coldplay playlist of 6 songs, plus 6 more rock songs.

To quote the website:

This is how the competition will work. Each forum will come up with its ultimate playlist and submit it to www.absoluteradio.co.uk/rockoff where all entries will be listed. Every forum that submits a playlist will have a link back to its site. Then a judging panel including Absolute Radio’s head of music and DJ Ben Jones will select the top sixteen playlists, which will then battle it out in a massive on-air tournament. Absolute listeners will vote for their favourite playlist on the website to decide the winning forum.

All sixteen that make it through to the tournament will get mentioned on-air and credited on the site with links back to their forum. They will also be included in a “best of” Rock-Off radio show on the 21st December.

The winning forum’s playlist will be turned into a special radio show on 22nd December, giving the forum the credit and respect they deserve from real music fans across the country! On top of this, the entire day will be dedicated to the winning forum’s artist, and Absolute will play one of their songs every hour.

The deadline to enter is 23 November, but I would like for us to finalise our playlist before then as I want time to submit it for us :P

So, lets get choosing our ultimate 6 Codlplay songs, plus the ultimate 6 Rock/Indie songs to go with it :funky:

:w00t: good idea Matt!

I think the best way to get our six best is either is everyone says there top 6 or we pick the more generally popular Coldplay songs so Absolute will see more interest in our playlist.

As for the 6 rock song's i have no idea how we should come up with those :(

Well, I think we should all choose 6 Coldplay tracks (if you are a fan) and then 6 ultimate rock tracks, and we can discuss and agree the 'best' ones. We could always do a Coldplay shortlist from what we the fans think, then a poll to choose the top 6 from a shortlist of say 12?

Great idea, love it, do we post our top 6 coldplay tracks in here than, my ultimate fave has to be Fix You

Yes, please post your Ultimate 6 Coldplay songs - and maybe say why you like them so much?

I think the key to the other 6 songs is pick songs/arttists who were/are an influence on the band, therefore it would work very well to complement the setlist.

I'll think about this and try and come up with some ideas in the next 2/3 days.

OK then my top 6 coldplay songs:

1| Fix You

2| Shiver

3| Dont Panic

4| Politik

5| Viva La Vida

6| Talk

and my ultimate 6 rock songs (not in order and also pretty basic as it's such a wide genre, but i was going for more 'ultimate' tracks):

1| The Who - Wont Get Fooled Again

2| Pink Floyd - Money

3| AC/DC - Let There Be Rock

4| Nirvana - Breed

5| Nine Inch Nails - March of the Pigs

6| Rage Against the Machine - Freedom

or alternativly from wikipedia it says:

Coldplay's early material was compared to acts such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, U2, and Travis.[4]Since the release of Parachutes, Coldplay have drawn influence from other sources, including Echo and the Bunnymen,[5] Kate Bush and George Harrison[6] on A Rush of Blood to the Head, Johnny Cash and Kraftwerk for X&Y and Blur,[7] Arcade Fire and My Bloody Valentine on Viva la Vida.[8]

so if we use only artist mentioned there i would suggest the other 6 be something like

Jeff Buckley - Grace

Blur - Popscene

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday

The Beatles - Eight Days A Week

Oasis - Dont Look Back In Anger

Johnny Cash - I Walk The Line

:o I love that idea! I will be posting my selections this week :D

Brilliant idea Matt! :D This shall be very hard so I'll think of them over the next few days ^_^

I have 4 in mind for sure, the other 2 I have to re-think. Actually Chris has posted 4 of them already, I would add Yellow, and Parachutes

so it looks like this.

01 Fix You

02 Talk

03 Yellow

04 Shiver

05 Parachutes

06 Viva La Vida

01 The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

02 Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

03 Arcade Fire - No Cars Go

04 Oasis - Champagne Supernova

05 Kate Bush - This Woman's Work

06 U2 - With Or Without You

Not a massive Coldplay fan, but here's my top six from them:

01. The Scientist

02. Speed of Sound

03. Yellow

04. Violet Hill

05. Clocks

06. What If

Great idea! :o I think this should be really good. I think what the best idea would be, is to see what everyone posts as their favourite Coldplay tracks and then take say the Top 4 most popular from BuzzJack, and then discuss in depth the other 2 that should be chosen. Obviously the other 6 songs will be a lot harder to choose from as everyone has their own opinion, and there is a LOT of good tracks to choose from.

My top 6 from Coldplay would be:

1. Viva La Vida

2. Shiver

3. The Scientist

4. Speed of Sound

5. 42

6. Yellow

and then the other 6 songs would be,

1. The Killers - Mr Brightside

2. Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

3. Bloc Party - Helicopter

4. Kings of Leon - Molly's Chamber

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge

6. Oasis - Champage Supernova

I agree what TIP said about picking artists that influence Coldplay, but I think that's maybe easier said than done... but I think the playlist should definitely reflect Coldplay in some way or another. (I know mine doesn't really though )

Ok, I love the idea of having the 4 most popular, and then the last 2 up for debate :D I will be posting mine soon as it has changed so much lately!

I do like the idea of Coldplay releated tracks - but any ideas on how we can make a shortlist?

Ok...

1. Shiver

2. Politik

3. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

4. Everything's Not Lost

5. Don't Panic

6. High Speed

well wikipedia lists theses acts as Coldplay influences:

Radiohead

Jeff Buckley

U2

Travis

Echo and the Bunnymen

Kate Bush

George Harrison

Johnny Cash

Kraftwerk

Blur

Oasis

Arcade Fire

My Bloody Valentine

so we could just use those artists maybe

Hmm, we could do, that gives us something to start from at least!

This is absolute radio's playlist:

http://www.absoluteradio.co.uk/music/we_pl...list/index.html

So its nothing too heavy, and not too odd either. (they've still got Elbow- One Day Like This on their a list , keep that in mind :P )

My favourites:

1. Viva La Vida

2. The Scientist

3. Lost

4. Lovers In Japan

5. Yellow

6. Violet Hill

If Radiohead influenced Coldplay then Creep or No Surprises should be used as one of the six

Others

U2- Vertigo

Blur- Beetlebum

And others not really associated with Coldplay

Evanescence- My Immortal

Artic Monkeys- Florescant Adolescant

Well U2 are the act Coldplay are always compared to (but what new bands aren't these days?...) so I think they'd be a good choice for a track. Not sure which song would be best, but probably an older U2 song, maybe something like One or With or Without You.

I've just done a little bit of research of Colplay's infleunces and it seems like each different member has their own influences. Clocks was inspired by Muse for example, and they fit very well into the rock/indie catergory... maybe something like Hurricanes and Butterflies would be a good choice.
