November 19, 200816 yr It's a cheap, naff and tacky record company way of exploiting fans - especially the dedicated who rush to buy the product when it's originally released, probably in the first week, helping the album get that all-important first-week chart position. It's a pretty shoddy and nasty way to get money out of you..... and it also encourages people to not buy an album on its release but to illegally download it - and then wait for the inevitable 'deluxe' rip-off release. If this was genuinely for the fans and not a calculated, devious way to rip them off - surely the companies should offer a return policy - whereby you return your crappy original purchase...and pay a small amount for the re-release. I think artists should stand up and shout off about this more, too - I didn't see Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse or Duffy arguing that their loyal fans are being right-royally ripped-off by the increasingly desperate record companies. Does their silence mean they support it? It stinks... but while people are stupid enough to be swindled by these 'deluxe editions' - then the record companies will continue to con you and rake in your money. Totally agree, except the last bit- you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't as a fan. If you want the extra stuff you have to buy it! I know you can often d/l the tracks but i also don't see why people who'd rather buy physical than digital should be ripped off further. Even if they sold the extra stuff separately for those who bought the 1st album, then you could just add it on. I think, as the record companies have actively tried to discourage us buying physical singles, they are using tactics like this to try and shift us on with albums, as people have been more resistant with LPs. I mean, if you pirate the original version you'll pirate the new one so it's not really helping that is it? So if d/l means you only have to pay for the extra content, they will use this to say it's not their fault and you have the option to merely d/l the new bit, and since there are so many deluxes ppl will move quicker to just d/ling in the 1st place :arrr:
November 20, 200816 yr I'm sure there a lot of people here who are thrilled for Leona Lewis now her re-released album is heading for #1, but it's setting such a TERRIBLE precedent. How is it setting a precedent when: i) many artists have done it before ii) the album chart now and for the next few weeks will be engulfed with deluxe editions which were planned months ago - we already know The Killers have a deluxe edition ready and their non-deluxe album hasn't even be released yet Edited November 20, 200816 yr by 6weeksatnumber7
November 20, 200816 yr Deluxe editions can be good if you havent bought the original or you like the extra tracks/remixes thrown in. However, more and more record companies seem to be using it as a way of milking more money out of the fans. I've started to notice that some record companies are releasing 1 and 2 cd deluxe editions of albums from the first day of release. Look at Dido & Britney for instance. I wonder if either of their albums will be released again at some point in the future to boost sales?
November 20, 200816 yr They just take the p***. And with the success of these albums it just ENCOURAGES record companies to do it again. In a time where our economy is falling and times are hard, record companies are exploiting fans and it's just wrong imo. I don't mind if they release 4/5 new tracks and then a DVD or something - that way you're it's not so bad, but for just 1/2 new tracks it just completely takes the p***, especially with albums that have already sold BUCKET LOADS. The Ting Tings are releasing a duluxe album too. Every Tom, Dick and Harry will be doing it soon.
November 20, 200816 yr Ting Tings have a deluxe version of We Started Nothing coming out on Monday. They've offered everyone the chance to buy just disc 2 at a reduced price. Thats really good :)

November 20, 200816 yr According to Sony they're only making available a "limited quantity" of the bonus stuff available for the Ting Tings. Nice gesture but hardly allowing everyone the chance to but disc 2 - it's £6 as well so not that much cheaper than the full thing! Edited November 20, 200816 yr by 6weeksatnumber7

It gives the message that record companies can take the p*** as much as they want and still shoot to #1 by selling the same album to people twice.

It just couldn´t have been more of a cash-in. At least, other Deluxe Editions, like Amy Winehouse, included loads of extra material: new songs, videos, live versions, etc. Leona´s is just cheap, cheap, cheap material, that is suceeding because the british sheep have seen her on X-Factor, and like robots go there and buy it... (even tough most of them must already have the original version of the album).

(even tough most of them must already have the original version of the album). Actually Leona's Deluxe Edition also has a track called 'Misses Glass' on it which was also added to the American version of the album - it also features a DVD of her music videos so far. So at least look at the facts first. I expect the real reason they've only added three new tracks is because, until recently, the rules were that Deluxe album sales would be counted separately if they contained more than three new tracks. The record company were probably trying to abide by these rules so they could boost sales for the album or they'd have at least included her B-Sides. Who said the people buying is are being sheep and have the original version of the album? I'm sure some of them are but, personally, I got the album last Christmas, got someone to send me 'Misses Glass' and 'Forgive Me' when they were added to the American album and I got the studio version of 'Run' thanks to file sharing sites. I'm certainly not going to be paying for three new tracks and a DVD I'm not particularly interested and I'm a big supporter of Leona Lewis.

(Forgive Me, Misses Glass and Run) Plus Better In Time and Footprints are the far superior single mixes so it's good to have them on an album. Then there is a DVD with all her music videos and if you put the CD into your computer, you get access to an Opendisc webstie with lots of behind the scenes vids and other fan stuff.

November 21, 200816 yr So I think it's Bye bye to the Follow Up Albums and Hello Deluxe Editions

Amy Winehouse was #1 earlier this year with her deluxe. The Travelling Wilbury's last year. Though not reaching #1 many other deluxes have charted high and long in the album chart. This is not a precedent, just a continuation of a trend. Edited November 21, 200816 yr by 6weeksatnumber7

We had a reasonable discussion about Dido and why we felt it's not performing as well - there's no need to turn bitter against other artists. The Deluxe of Leona's contains 3 new songs, 3 single mixes not on the original album, 5 dance remixes, 5 videos and 2 behind the scenes videos plus online content which can only be accessed through the DVD. November 21, 200816 yr Duffys Deluxe version next week is shocking. It's great they she's offering so many new tracks (much better then the 'deluxe with 2 original new songs eg. Rihanna!) but she is releasing the exact same CD with a bonus CD. Why can't they just sell the bonus CD seperately for the 1million + people who already own the original??? It's like a big fat slap in the face :( I expect that after christmas - when the majority have already bought it - they will split the two CDs  i'll probabbly wait until then. The Deluxe of Leona's contains 3 new songs, 3 single mixes not on the original album, 5 dance remixes, 5 videos and 2 behind the scenes videos plus online content which can only be accessed through the DVD. Mine doesn't contain 5 dance mixes and 2 behind the scenes  It's not too bad for me because i never bought the original Spirit so i can't really complain about it :D Edited November 21, 200816 yr by Glyn

November 21, 200816 yr I don't see Duffy so much as ripping people off. It is in a way but most people with a brain who already own the album will download the new tracks-I will. What is a rip off, is that Leona's deluxe isn't even available to download, so people must go out and buy it.
