The Killers have taken the lead in the competition to top this week’s albums chart, with their Day And Age (Vertigo) outselling Guns N’ Roses long-awaited new album Chinese Democracy (Polydor) by around 20,000 copies, in what is likely to be one of the biggest chart battles of the year.

In its first day of sale Day And Age sold 70,764 copies to Chinese Democracy’s 50,791, according to midweek sales figures that see five new entries in the top ten.

These are: Rhydian’s eponymous debut album (Syco) at three, with 33,937 sales; The Priests’ eponymous debut (Epic) at four with 19,688 sales and Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreaks (Mercury) at six with 16,530 sales.

Only Men Aloud’s self-titled debut (UCJ) is currently sat at 11, on sales 11,276, while Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March EP (Parlophone) is at 18 on sales of 8,161.

Elsewhere, new albums from the Salvation Army (UCJ), Alesha Dixon (Asylum), Lemar (Epic) and John Barrowman (Epic) look set for top forty entries, while new albums from Lesley Garrett (UCJ) and Paul McCartney’s The Fireman (One Little Indian), Linkin Park’s live album Road To Revolution – Live At Milton Keynes (Warner Bros), Craig David’s Greatest Hits (Warner Bros) and the soundtrack to Britannia High (Fascination) look set to enter the top 70.

On the singles chart Take That’s Greatest day looks certain to top the chart on Sunday, after selling 24,666 units on day of release, ahead of current chart topper, Beyoncé’s If I were A Boy.

McFly's position=

Children In Need is turning into a curse...

Oooh lots of big falls in the albums  poor Dido but was to be expected. Any idea how P!nk is in either chart?
Is Sugababes Girls still top 40?
Wondering whether you can call Britneys "comeback" a hit or miss, peaked at 4, which was below Gimme More & POM, But the sales are alot higher and it has hung around on downloads for 4 weeks, especially seeing as people could get it illegally weeks beforehand. Interesting to see how the album does. Top 5 i reckon #2 or #3

Well I knew a few weeks back the single has peaked, she released the track too early on downloads.
