Amazon MP3 launches in the UK

10:59 | Wednesday December 3, 2008

By Ben Cardew

Amazon has soft launched its long-awaited MP3 store in the UK today, offering MP3 downloads from all four of the majors and several independent labels at bargain prices.

Amazon launched its MP3 store in the US late in 2007 and promised at Midem 2008 that it would roll this out globally by the end of the year.

The launch has been long rumoured, with early reports suggesting that it would launch in September.

The site, which operates off the main Amazon.co.uk site, is competing on price, with albums such as Take That’s The Circus available for just £3. Hits such as Girls Alouds’ Promises are available at 59p.

Tracks on the site are encoded using variable bit rates for maximum audio quality and smaller file sizes, aiming at an average of 256kbps.

Amazon are jumping on gthe bandwagon with cheap albums

It could do. To be honest I never (or very very rarely) buy albums on iTunes as I think they're too expensive without having a physical product in my hands (OK, I admit it, i'm a physical junkie). But £3 is around the right price for a digital album I think :)
This could seriously make a huge difference in sales!

Exactly what I was thinking..maybe not at the moment but in the near future it could when it gets going!

I have a sneaky feeling Girls Aloud may creep up as it's £3!

:)

£3 is about right for a digital album?? £3 is what i normally pay for a normal cd album

People still don't like buying digital Albums, and i dont think Amazon will change things instantly. These deals for the top Albums will most likely be a one week thing.

I agree. Hope it isn't just a 1 week offer. About time the itunes monopoly was broken.

Amazon put on some incredible deals on their mp3 store in the States.

The worry I'd have with come of these £3 albums is are the sales chart eligible? I thought there was a minimum price stipulation in effect.

As PopJustice rightly pointed out, this whole £3 for an album thing is just loss-leading. They're blatantly losing themselves money to draw people in but is financially unsustainable in the long run. I assume it'll be for a minimal time period then they'll probably join in line with the other digital retailers.

Where is Ladyhawke at the moment?

It's down to 54! I'm surprised that it's been as big as it has on iTunes tbh! I was thinking she'd fall really fast after hitting The Top 40 but she hasn't :o

I deleted her, because isn't her single out now? If it isn't out yet, then I apologise...
