Thinking of the best instrumentals ever....

A classic that comes to mind is

Robert Miles - Children

My personal favourite at the moment is

Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar

What other great tracks are contender for the best instrumental ever?

I think Eric Prydz's Pjanoo will be a classic in future years :D

Children is probably my favourite...then you've got Darude's Sandstorm which everyone seems to love

loads of trance tracks.... indeed cafe del mar, robert miles, 'carte blanche' is still very popular.

unfortunately not many current dance tracks 'have it'.. dance seems to have lost its innovation and has resorted to dancifying oldies or sampling them with a dance beat... p*** poor music really.

The original "What Time Is Love" by KLF, without the slightly annoying rapper.... BANGIN'.....

Dunno if it counts (cos it's got a bit of distorted, mangled shrieking and a short sample from "Hellraiser", but I kind of see the "voices" as being more part of the instrumentation of the whole ensemble and just there to add to the mood and atmosphere of the track tbh...), but "Come To Daddy" by Aphex Twin... :w00t:

Best Instrumentals? What about:

Leftfield - Storm 3000

Leftfield - Space Shanty

Aphex Twin - Heliosphan

Fluke - Kitten Moon

Underworld - Glam Bucket

Thievery Corporation - The Cosmic Game

Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe 5

Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene 2

Orbital - Science Friction

Orbital - Out There Somewhere? (Part I & II)

Orbital - The Box (Part I & II)

Depeche Mode - Uselink

FSOL - Expander (Remix)

The Orb - UFOrb

Boards of Canada - Everything You Do Is a Baloon

On the category "almost unknown great songs": Ulrich Schnauss - In All the Wrong Places (a song from 2003):

Imagine a mix of Boards of Canada, Slowdive & Chapterhouse...

A sublime song! :P

Yep, love most of that lot myself tbh, would probably add the absolutely astounding, full-on 15-minute album version of Orbital's "Are We Here?" as well.... FSOL's "Papua New Guinea"....

...And the 40 minute versh of The Orb's "The Blue Room"... WOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHH, what a total head-fukk that was, you dont even need to drop an acid with that one (of course, it helps LOL).

The Ulrich Shnauss track is fukkin' AMAZIN' by the way....

I agree with Pjanoo being classic!

I'll say Clubbed To Death!!!!

I could add the whole "Lifeforms" album (2 discs) by FSOL; I'm afraid it's too good...

"Are We Here?" is a masterpiece indeed, but you can add at instrumentals if you consider the gorgeous voice of Alison Goldfrapp as part of the instruments.

Another goodies:

- The instrumental of "Someone Great" by LCD Soundsystem (found on 45:33 album)

- Daft Punk with their awesome "Voyager"

- Kinobe with "Skyscraper": so simple, so effective!

- UNKLE - UNKLE (Main Title Theme): incredible! (it has a little vocals, but it's instrumental at its roots):

- Nigthtmares on Wax - "Les Nuits": impossible to not love this song! Very jazzy & electronic at the same time:

- Of course, Orbital (again) with their classic Chime:

- 808 State - Pacific State: this one will make you feel really good!

- Wamdue Project - Instrumentation: top class!

- The Orb - Star 6 7 8 & 9: Houston, we don't have any problems!

- The Orb - Pomme Fritz: the video is unique, as the song

- William Orbit - Adagio For Strings: classic song re-worked

The best of the best instrumental is Halcyon & On & On (sampled vocals of Kristy Haukshaw):

One word: PERFECTION!

but you can add at instrumentals if you consider the gorgeous voice of Alison Goldfrapp as part of the instruments.

She doesn't really sing any lyrics though, so her voice can be read as vocalisations and as part of the overall instrumentation, rather than as lead vocals... "Are We Here..?" is really mostly about the tribal-sounding rhythms and the break beats, Ali's vocalisations enhance that, but dont stand out apart from it in the way that they would if she were singing actual lyrics....

It's the same as the "vocals" in 'Come To Daddy' innit... They're part of the overall effect...

Yeah, you're right!

The same for the "vocal texture" of Toni Halliday on "Cerebral" by FSOL :)

And William Orbit's Barbers Adagio For Strings (and also Mauro Picotto's Komodo even thou I do think the vocal version is better). The one no-one has mentioned so far is Paul Oakenfold's Big Brother Theme - it is a dance track and I do like it quite a bit.
