Am I the only one feeling uninspired by this list.

Maybe because I've heard of all 15 acts on the list and previously heard music by 11 of the above list.

Hence, no surprises for me to go and check out and go wow s/he/they are good..

The thing with this list is that it's just a list of acts who've released stuff recently who've been hyped up in a few places. If you regularly look for new music on the internet you're going to have heard of most of them...

Exactly. Most of those artists are on majors and have already had a lot of hype (and some success in other countries). You always get new acts that never make the list and have really good years, take The Script this year for example.

these are SO predictable:

VV Brown

Florence and the Machine

Frankmusik

Kid Cudi

La Roux

Lady GaGa

Little Boots

not heard the others...glad it's more pop orientated than previous years though when it was completely indie dominated

edit: oh yes I have heard of Dan Black, he was one of the male artists I looked up whilst looking for BJSCXII entries, I thought he was quite good ^_^

Lady GaGa (which doesn't really help my scenester status :P ) and Florence and the Machine. I'm definately going to have to do some research!

I've only heard of Lady Gaga and Florence and the machine. I'm still only 20 and I think I'm past it

*cough* BJSC, pretty sure about half of them have entered. *cough*

Gaga has no success at all in the UK though? If it wasn't for the internet I highly doubt many people on here would know of her.

Actually i first heard Just Dance on local radio :o

There's SO much potential from this list. From the various tracks/demos I've heard things some very promising. 2009 looks like being the year of electro if this list is anything to judge by. 10/15 use electronica in their music...

I'm sure i'll be sick of electro by the end of the year, if it all ends up sounding the same. I wish Dance would become a bit less reliant on purely electronic sounds. I.e the crappy remixes of big songs.

Only heard of Lady GaGa (meh) and White Lies ().

I think the difference this year is that myself and a few others have posted extensively about many of these acts. They're very Buzzjack. There's been little posted about Mumford, The Temper Trap, Passion Pit, Dan Black etc elsewhere but I've created loads of threads as have people like Medicated and so the word has spread. We're like a mini music culture. Outside of BJ I think you'd find a lot of Indie people even not knowing a few...

I don't know what you're looking for? Baring in mind this list is supposed to find the best new acts for the year ahead, whilst balancing the likelihood of success (major label deal or not? etc).

Yeah thanks to people like you BJ recieves all the medium-sized in terms of success bands generally. Tbh if more than 5% of those garagebands were good then we'd know about them

Been listening to a few of these..

I really like The Big Pink, Dan Black, VV Brown, Florence and the Machine and La Roux but think Lady GaGa is my fave so far..

:o What do people predict will be the top 5 for this?
Whoever comes runner-up i'm betting on becoming more successful than the winner :heehee: (Duffy > Adele) and (Corrine Bailey Rae > whoever won 2006  can't remember who won that one)

Hmmm I'm really unsure who will win it tbh!

I'd love VV Brown to come like Top 5 though.

1. FrankMusik

2. White Lies

3. Little Boots

4. Dan Black

5. Empire of the Sun

then just for laughs,

6. Lady GaGa

7. Passion Pit

8. Master Shortie

9. La Roux

10. VV Brown

Lady Gaga doesn't really need this does she? She's going to be big whenever so...

It doesn't really matter tbh, it's just nice to see who "the people in the know" think will become big. Ofc they always get it wrong, but I fully expect both Kid Cudi and Ladt GaGa to have #1 singles in January. And acts like FrankMusik, Little Boots and White Lies (well i think they're almost certain to be absolutely massive) have the potential to be hugee this year.

Apart from Gaga the only others that I REALLY want to have big success (From what I've heard so far) are:

Frankmusik and Little Boots!

Frankmusik won't be all that big. For a start he's signed to Island. Secondly they're pushing him as a pop artist. Male pop artists ALWAYS struggle. Look how they f***ed up Sam Sparro for a start...
His album wasn't very big, but Black and Gold was a real hit. Personally I hate Sam Sparrow, his music is dulldulldull to me, and while FrankMusik is in a similar vein, they're both different. FrankMusik is a a cross between Mika and Sam Sparrow, and his success could go either way (I think the former) but we shall just see. I think a lot will depend on what he puts out as his lead single...
