Much as I like Alexandra... her voice doesn't suit Hallelujah.... the song is all about quiet, understated emotion..... and Jef Buckley does is perfectly (far better than Rufus Wainwright who always sings flat as a witch's tit)....

Plus...what's with the big, gushing crescendo at the end of Alexandra's version? Nooooooooooo....wrong wrong wrong.

To be honest, that's my favourite bit of the whole thing. It's a different reading of the song from Buckley, sure. but to me it's like an outpouring of emotion, that she's letting all the pain of love seep through her veins. In short, it works :)

But the song isn't about an outpouring of pain - read the lyrics - her OTT vocals towards the end are totally at odds with what Hallelujah is actually about.... a twisted, claustrophobic tale of love, religion....and orgasm (yes, really).

The hilarious fact about Hallelujah is that Simon Cowell probably hasn't even heard the Jeff Buckley version (or of Jeff Buckley).... his first exposure to the song was the American Idol guy Jason Castro getting it to sing.... I'd bet my wages on it. He's hardly a musically adventurous man, is he?

Best versions? Well.... Imogen Heap, kd lang and Jeff Buckley for me - no histrionics, singing the song as it should be sung...

now here is someone who gets the song.

really not a good choice of song for an x factor finalist tbh, she has killed it. the worst thing is people will proberly start remembering it by her rather than Jeff or Leonard.

Following the rather depressing news that this year's X factor finalist will be covering Leonard Cohen's beautiful 'Hallelujah,' I think everyone should download the Jeff Buckley version, instead of buying the inevitably soulless version churned out by Simon Cowell's Crimbo flash in the pan.

If Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is so beautiful why not download that one instead? (Or is it not available?)

Rufus Wainright's version is better than Jeff's! I bet his people are now regretting not allowing it to be downloaded as a stand-alone track.

If you like Jeff's version and want to own it, buy it. But if you are doing it as some kind of stupid protest then you are a bigger sheep than anyone who loves Alexandra or her version downloading her rendition. The sad thing is most of those who are making these protest downloads will think they are much better than those who buying something they like.

IMO K D Lang's version is the best! My flatmate has it on CD, and as I don't usually do "ripping" I downloaded it yesterday. And at about 1am I downloaded Alexandra's version because I think she interprets it well (and she can't help the OTT instrumental/backing choir arrangement).

It's on her website! So, I believe that!

Can you please paste the link? I checked her official fansite (Leonalewismusic.co.uk) and there is nothing about a UK physical release for Run.

But there is information about a physical release for Germany.

Anyway this is not a thread about Leona :D

Alexandra's version of the song is amazing!! I love her voice so much. Jls' version of the song is brilliant too, both of which i prefer to those other versions, even though some of you may disagree. Alex for number 1!!! I have already bought it, buying the cd on wednesday when im out getting the crimbo shopping.

Two very different versions of Leonard Cohen's own Hallelujah:

This first one is a German TV performance (I jumped when I saw the presenter!), with a big backing choir. Lyrically it matches the well-known covers.

The second one is live in concert. Not such a big backing, naturally, but the lyrics are rather different! :o Nothing about King David!

Actually, I'm an idiot, he just left out the first couple of verses. Still, quite different version.

Can't stand Rufus he just bumbles all the way through it  ...love Jeff's  i think Alex deserved to win last night she has a great voice but i can't imagine it fitting this gorgeous and understated track... i have not listened to her version yet to scared to listen

This song is so good not even X Factor can ruin it with the predictable overproducing and oversinging but still I think Jeff Buckley is the best version of it and would make a brilliant chrimbo #1 but it's inevitable Alexandara will get it. :(

At least Aston from JLS understood the emotion of it but as much as I liked them better it's probably best they didn't win as they can do better than being Westlife mark 2.

Last Week, Gordon Smart. 'Bizarre page - 'The Sun'), joined the Campaign to get

Jeff Buckley's verison to No.1 . He's encouraging 'The Sun' readers to Download it.

Strange considering it was the Sun who joined up with the X Factor for Hero?

I can't understand this campaingn at all?? so because someone from 'god forbid' THE X-FACTOR is releasing 'Halleluja' WE are being told we have to download ANOTHER cover version of the song in protest?? Is this just to get one over on Alexandra Burke or Simon Cowell or whoever?? why is important to get this in the chart?

Would everyone be downloading this now if it wasn't being released by the winner?? would it be in the Itunes top 100?? I just feel that people being snobby about the X-Factor are just ending up even worse then the 'sheep' they are so much against....

It's in protest of Cowell ruining Christmas number one!

It's not a very good protest. It's giving extra publicity to his winner's version, which means Alexandra will sell even more than she would have done without the campaign.

And the rights to the song are owned by Sony, so it's a win-win situation. Except for those idiots who bought a song they don't particularly like.

More publicity? It's not as if any more will make a difference anyway. And I quite like that this version (a classic for years to come) will finally get to be the hit that it deserves to be!

That's a much better reason. Just don't think it'll annoy Simon Cowell, because it won't. He'll just take the credit.

He wrote about 30 different verses for it I think? Or something like that, so I don't blame him for mixing around his song up. :P

Tbh, it's the first time there's ever been a reality winner covering a decent song!, and Alexandra isn't that bad either.

It was on an iplayer advert on the BBC when it started popping up on Itunes, but this only helped.
